Hey what style of extinguisher do you guys and girls use.

Guys,

Make sure that your extinguisher has the sticker that mentions the AS--- certification. Not sure exactly which AS but to enter a CAMS-sanctioned speed type event you need this sticker.

If you're doing supersprints then you need to have a date stamp on your extinguisher as well. Scrutineers can knock you back for having an out-of-date extinguisher or one with no date at all.

What a timely return for this thread.

I found myself extinguisher-less yesterday as punishment for not thinking far enough ahead.

I bought the $25 one from Super Cheap.....and for those that haven't bought yet..... DONT!

I'm sure all the extingiushers are good enough, but this has a *horrible* plastic mount and strap. The one I bought from Kmart about 2 years ago has proper metal bracket and strap, this will last much longer.

yes it looks crappy but line it up with that backseat bolt nice and tight and it wont budge

ps. i widened the middle hole with a blade to get it big enough.

I bought mine from Clints - $40 reduced to $25.

AS Certified and the bracket is metal but it clearly looks like it was designed for wall mount.

The heat issue is not about degrading the chemicals. The extinguishers are rated to a certain psi and with an increase in temperature the pressure also increases.

Don't use a plastic mounting bracket, even if it came with one. Metal is king. :uh-huh:

As an aside, if a dry chemical extinguisher is discharged inside your car it will be a write off. So be careful with these babies!

Be also advised that if you use it to put out an engine fire, the motor will invariably have to come out OR some sort of professional clean.

But if you motor is on fire you got bigger problems...

Most of these extinguishers are bicarbonate so it's a fine inert powder.

Yep safety reasons for a metal bracket. That thin plastic strap wouldn't be much chop in an impact.

I don't know if it's "likely to go bang". The problem is the powder goes everywhere and gets into everything, is corrosive and hydroscopic (attracts water). In an engine bay if you can clean it off asap it's OK, but in an interior you would have to strip it all out and replace it and scrub the shell.

AS 1841 is the standard CAMS needs, and the extinguisher must be serviced in accordance with AS 1851:

* 6 monthly inspection

* 3 yearly service incl. recharge

* 6 yearly service incl. pressure test
