Hey Guys,

ive been trying to chase down a misfire at idle for the past month and i think ive tracked it down to an intake gasket leak. So i pulled the intake off (horrible job) there are so many things that need to be unscrewed that you can’t see including the dip stick. Anyway when i look at the lower intake there is fresh oil in each of the runners. its not much at all but my question is,

is it an intake valve seal leak or something else? Also i didn’t remove all the coolant before i took it off so some coolant leaked out. Could some of it have gone in the intakes for the engine? How do i check? Its got new oil and id hate to have to change it again but with the oil in the intake will i have to pull the head anyway?

im pretty lost now i just want it fixed so i need to know the best course of action.

ive got a spare reco'ed head already but dont know much about whats been do to it. so do i just take it to a rebuilder and get it tested. much much would it be? what does it cost to get the head put on with a new head gasket? the intake and exhaust sides will be already off so that should save a bit i think?

thanks guys

if its and older engine you might find there is old oil in the intercooler check that first. Even so oil in the intake side doesnt mean you head is bad more likely a seal in your turbo or some blow by or crank case pressure

checked the intercooler and turbo all very clean and never had any oil issues before. i as i said i only just put new oil in and its only a few drops in each runner. i just dont want to put it together to find i gotta pull the head ya know?

I'm very surprised that you have no oil in the IC/intake system.

The PCV vents into the intake and the front of the turbo. You WILL get oil vapour running though these two places.

The turbo sucks it up and passes it through the IC and the rest of the system into the inlet manifold, where it is re-burned as part of the emissions process. The only way that this doesn't happen is if you vent the PCV to the atmosphere or if you're using a very good oil/air separator.

If your valve stems were leaking oil, it would be impossible to smear the intake manifold. The oil would drip into the cylinder bores, not defy gravity and make it's way up. Air is also moving into the bores via the manifold which would also rule out the flow of oil against the force of air under running conditions.

I dunno man, this is a weird one if you've positively ruled out PCV gases.

Keep us posted.

thanks for the info 2LV8ETR

that makes sense i guess, i have a catch can setup (non atmo) and ive never had any oil in it. its plugged in from the right side of the cam cover to the intake pipe which goes into the turbo. ive seen people connect it from the PVC to the left cam cover, is that a better configuration?

to be honest guys i thought it was a intake manifold gasket leak but it looks pretty good. i just dont want to put it back together and find its the head the whole time.

ive ruled out

coils

plugs

ignited

everything on the exhaust side

coil loom

injectors

ecu

all sensors seem normal (PFC hand controler)

will be putting a new temp sensor in when i put the intake manifold back on

any ideas guys? the car runs fine when cold but as soon as its warm it misses like a bitch. its been 4 months and i think ive forgotten how to drive.

the only other thing is that its hard to start cold and when i pump the gas to get it going i get a pop/clunk from the intake, its not all the time and only with the stock ecu. pfc starts first time every time.

  • 6 months later...

hey guys, old post i searched up, just need some answers, i was cleaning out stuff like the afm and making sure all my FMIC silicon hoses were airtight, when i noticed some oil under where my boost controller was, i took the controller out, looked pretty oily, i cleaned it out and connected to the stock pipes back, I took it for a drive, looked at it and there was more oil. the oil seems to be coming from the IC and going towards the solenoid t-piece.

whats going on? i think theres a leak somewhere letting oil into my intake, i took the IC piping goin to the throttle body off and there was some oil there, not much but it was noticable.

I would just like to know if this is a real bad thing? the car boosts fine (10 psi, earthed to always run high boost), i havent put the controller back on, will probably get rid of it. do u guys know where this could be coming from? Im really confused.

this just isnt my month,lol

cheers for any help

Ben

You dont really need to bump a thread three times in one afternoon dude

Oh sorry man i didnt mean to put this thread all in your face,, i just needed some help, and i wanted to kno before today so i'd kno whether to get it to a mechanic quick or not..

anyway, thanks for ur input,,helped a lot.. oh sh*t, my car's fixed! thanks bro

do you have a oil catch can? the breaths on a stock rb25 go into the intake pipe then goes through the turbo and into the intake system. so that is where the oil would be comming from.

What you need to do is remove all the intercooler pipes and clean them out and install a oil catch cat at the same time!

once you have done this test it.

thanks a lot for the reply, man, well i got a catch can at my house ,jus never got to put it on.. after reading a few threads on here, some ppl said a catch can's only neccessary for cars that see many track days(ive never taken mine to the track). i'll give this a go tomorro afernoon and see how it goes. could it possibly be a leaky gaskett somewhere?

Are the breather hoses (plug into the cam covers) plumbed into your intake or your catch can? If so then your motor is probably getting on and breathing a bit of oil, hence the oil in the intake.

Get a catch can that vents back into the intake, this way you will stop the motor burning the oil. Also RBs tend to get a lot of oil in the head if you keep them at high revs for a long time.

hey man, yeah its plumbed in, i havent put the catch can on yet, will get it done this comin week,,

    • Yes.  The only scenario I can imagine when the answer isn't yes, is if you drive like there is highway patrol behind you at all times.  If your car currently runs, enjoy it and keep saving. Better costs more, keep saving until you can budget the better ECU. It's worth it.  Nope. Plenty of us making >300kw on unopened motors. Mine is unopened and makes about 350kw if I turn everything up, its fine (lots of caveats here, how the car will be used/abused, how long you expect the engine to last between rebuilds, how has the engine been maintained prior to coming into your ownership, etc etc).
    • Sorry just wanting to clarify, at this power goal, which should I be going? Also, More info regarding suspension, the rear upper camber arms were used to get the camber back to i believe around -0.5 ~ -1 degree (@ Road and Race in Rydalmere), I forgot the exact figure, but ALOT less camber than what it came originally which was like -2.5degrees. Are the traction arms still recommended? The bilsteins from SydneyKid, they've got 400lb/in fronts & 275/in in the rear, revalved to his specs. Intercooler, I'm just having a look at some on Rakuten.jp and some other japanese sites. Might get something from back there, GReddy, Blitz or HPI, all crossflow. Looking at roughly $450-$500 AUD + shipping... Theres not many choices except that chinese branded Justjap unless you go for blitz return flow. Yeah, only downside with Haltech is the price ahhaha, so expensive, and with all the sensors if I go that route... $$$$$ yeesh. Are headstuds/gaskets needed for <300akw?
    • Haltech fanboi reporting in. Buy the Haltech!
    • You can try shoving a borescope down there to see what's up.
    • I could see someone trying this to save money on oil changes.
