I wasn't happy with the stories Today Tonight was presenting so I thought I'd send them an email:

I would like to thank you for generalising all car enthusiasts as hoons. You don't do articles on the car enthusiasts (sorry I forgot to use the right word, hoon) that raise thousands of dollars for charity each year, only to be harrassed by the police.

It would be prudent of you to note to viewers that most of the footage you used in a recent article are from overseas (in regards to the drifting). The video with the white S14 drifting is from Japan, not Adelaide.

You would find if you spent some time with the majority of enthusiasts you will find a positive culture that keeps youth from doing drugs or crime.

I don't expect a reply, your media group seems happy to paint all car enthusiasts with the same brush, creating a form of social discrimination against a minority that is easily targetted. I hope that you find the time (even though it won't get you ratings) to provide some articles with a semblence of jounalistic integrity. I think the day we see that, will also be the day we see cops fly.

Their reply:

Dear Jaye,

Gee, hoped we'd escape the wrath of the intellectual giants of the drifting persuasion, but you've got us. Sorry we hate kids being killed on the road. Sorry that mess on Magill Road was a bit of a downer. Sorry we think some idiots try to emulate those deep and meaningful movies like "The Fast and Furious". Sorry we showed stuff that's not in Adelaide ... sorry the rest of the world is available to our youth on YouTube. Sorry we raised the subject of off-road facilities for the enthusiasts to race /drift/drag/etc safely. Can't help there's no facility in Adelaide. Try the Minister and see how you go.

Sorry you haven't grown up yet. You probably will, one day.

Graham Archer

Producer | Today Tonight

I wasn't very happy about this, so I sent the following back:

Dear Graham,

I guess your a little sore about someone questioning your journalistic integrity. You just showed your incredible lack of maturity and professional standards by replying that manner. You don't hate 'kids' being killed on the road, you relish the opportunity to present a biased an uninformed fairytale. The mess on Magill road was sad, but it is unfair to paint all people of the same age in the same way. You presented video footage as if it was in Adelaide, that is poor journalistic practices.

Sorry you haven't developed the maturity or professionalism to reply to criticism. Good luck with your below standard story time and 'helping your average aussie battler' spins. I hope you eventually find some stories to present that will actually benefit the community, not act as the wart on the arse end of Adelaide.

Yours sincerely,

Jaye

If you have something to contribute or say, feel free to email him at: [email protected]

The majority of these stories are based on bullshit, its in all car enthusiasts interest to try and do something about it

I would like to take the time to say bravo my friend. Even though it was by no means a win, it clearly demonstrates the ideology and the ethics that shows like TT emulate. That reply did get me a laugh and it was amusing to see the severe lack of maturity from the producer of such a big show.

regards

ash

well done mate :)

for him to react so strongly like that only goes to show that you hit on some very obvious sore points, especially regarding journalistic integrity.

i'm reading his reply again... and jeebus, it's kinda.... dribble? he's off on a rant that doesn't really address the main points of your initial email. What a bunch of ass clowns.

TT and ACA are THE laughing stock of tv "journalism", every one knows that... it's just a shame that the mainstream will readily except anything presented.

Don't you dare criticise my TT/ACA programs! they are the only real journalists left and are out there tackling the big issues;

I mean, Where else can I find out about how foreign people are all out to get australia, finding the right bra size for me and how to save 50c on my next shopping trip all in one episode :)

lol @ the producers' reply, it sounds like he's gotten a few emails from the enthusiast community before, that reply might even be used as a template in his outlook

Cruizer, I applaud you on your email but I think you've been going about it the wrong way, ACA/TT are always cat-fighting with each other, so you could play them off one another to your (and the enthusiast communities) advantage.

Take the TT producers' response and email ACA, tell them that TT doesn't have the guts or integrity to show Australia the real enthusiast community, that TT is nowhere near the same league as ACA and that they can prove it by doing an article that does show the real car community for what it is

As always I am joking, but you'd have to agree that Padding their ego and presenting a chance to show up their arch enemies will get a lot more attention than complaining and attacking their *cough* profession :P

Way to go mate!

If they knew all the charity cruises that were organised by car enthusiasts, and the amount we support the community, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on (hence why they ignore it)

Good work on sticking it to them!

Let us know how you go with ACA and the ABC

Well done lol =)

But its just that, they get a story out of making people look bad for what they in fact are not. It makes it hard for the civilised enthusiasts out there to get their point across to everyone when the shows like Today Tonight are dragging in the dollars with false stories. Sadly i don't think we will ever get such an opportunity, this being proved by his laughable and immature reply..that sucks =(

+1 to forewarding to media watch. They're job is to expose persuasive, one sided, misleading or outright false reports- such is common practice with the TT/ACA crews.. Go on, you know you want to  Just make sure your not a dodgey plumber or carsalesman or a neighbor from hell :)

I new media watch was there for a reason...lol +1 for sending it to them.

the reply shows that they are run by a bunch of monkeys. I wonder if a prominent automotive figure would have gotten the same response, now that would have been funny.

Hey Cruizer,

Good on you for trying, if they want to look the other way and not accept the truth just so they can make some $$ there's not much you can do except as a few others have said, report it to Media Watch...would love to seem them get reemed on that show, especially when they are just using a blanket response instead of actually accepting the truth many people are trying to point out...that not every young driver is a hoon!!...I don't know if this is you Cruizer on the silvia forum as it sounds very similar but it is definitely a separate email from TT that has the EXACT same response to your email you've posted on here...so obviously using a template and modifying it slightly to the individual email, so really they aren't taking any of it in...just modify a template and send off to keep the "hoons" happy thinking they are getting noticed with a thought out reply (if such an immature one).

Good luck making some head way, I hate getting tarred with that same "hoon" brush just because I'm young and drive an import...its complete and utter bullshit!!

Cheers!

Craig

    • Ahh... it's an early RE5R01A box, that means the pinouts I gave are wrong (they were for the RE4R01A 4-speed box)... I'll have to dig around in my docs to see if I've got that schematic (they used the same gearbox plug, with the vacant pin wired to the direct drive clutch solenoid)...prolly hidden away in a supplement somewhere... ...there were 3 variants of the RE5R01A ~ this early schema was what we called the 'dumb' 5 speed ; it's what jatco called a 'medium duty' box, with torque holding up roughly ~200ft/lbs or so, which was good for NA from RB20/25DE and up to around VG30 output spec. With the RB25DET (and VG33/35 mills), the only options they had was the 4-speed 4AX00 box, which had been beefed up to handle the extra torque (primarily for the VG35, but it also suited the RB25DET mill and others)...and the RE4R03 box in large 4WDs a lot of the time... ...the next variant of 5-speed was redesigned, stronger, and 'smart'...first ones had external TCU with internal (on valvebody) Shift Control Unit, pressure switches, and 2 x TSS...and the last ones had internal TCU+SCU setup, with CANbus control etc etc. @DRoc81 On the RHS of the box towards the rear, there should be a stamped silver ID tag -- what's the model number? Oh...and with the early 5-speeds, the torque converter control solenoid assembly should be replaced as well (31940-60X00)...it's a bit Murphy's Law ....if one has failed, bet on the rest not being far behind ...
    • I remembered wrong, but was close though 1Kz setting because those Jaycar SSRs don't go any faster, 1x pump per SSR with flyback diodes & heatsinks. In saying that, the heatsinks are overkill. Just on an alloy plate is more than sufficient. You'll find without a flyback diode, your SSRs will heat up big time and also die prematurely.  I've been running the two same SSRs since the last motor, no issues, car does 2 hour straight drives in summer once in a while and gets punished on the track. Nothing melts, no hot messes, etc.
    • Hmm. You're probably best off working out what the lobe centreline or even the LSA is for the stock cams, with VCT OFF. That's bound to be out there somewhere. Then, work on the assumption that the Kelford centreline is probably the same, and wouldn't be more than a couple of degrees away, if it is different at all. I'm very surprised that you needed to adjust the exhaust cam by 5° to get it on spec. That screams there's another problem somewhere. Anything from the belt being 1 tooth off (how many degrees is one tooth worth?) to simple user/measurement error on the degree wheel. I say this because Kelford, like most quality cam manufacturers these days, does a pretty good job of actually making the cams to spec, not relying on patching it up afterwards like we had to do back in the 80s.
    • Besides packing it, you can also fill your pump through the oil filter inlet port. After cranking for what felt like an eternity without pressure, i fed a tube in through there and filled it with oil. Cranked for a few seconds after that and had pressure.
