Not very cheery news I'm sorry - but if anything a reminder that we all need to take care out there:

http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthre...threadid=137540

In a nutshell... brand new M3 was taking it a bit too hard, lost control, flipped and exploded. Driver was badly burnt, passenger seriously hurt - rear seat passenger trapped in the car and died.

Yes this happens everyday, all over the world - but it was a club cruise and that just makes it a bit closer to home.

I had an accident on that exact same road, in the exact same car (imola e46 m3) a few weeks ago. I posted about it on e46fanatics, germantechnik, and someone linked to it from here: http://www.germantechnik.com/showth...=&threadid=1899 and http://www.germantechnik.com/showth...hlight=hospital

I can't believe something so terrible happened there so shortly after I had an accident there. I was hoping my accident could have somehow prevented this from happening again. Now a person lost their life

Looks like there are some very very very stupid BMW drivers in California.

we all do stupid shit that could result in what happened there. the simple fact is if your not willing to die as a result of a *** up. dont even considering breaking the rules. all this taken into account i honestly will happily take death for any *** up i do when driving, but im not going to risk the life of anyone else, its something i dont have the right to do.

I read that whole thread earlier tonight...very sad, and the guy hearing the passenger screaming before he died, that's just horrific :D

got me thinking about the rear passenger being trapped. That's something I've honestly never thought about...who here has ever jumped in the backseat on a cruise with someone who you don't really know, or are unsure of their driving ability? it makes you think twice when u hear stories like this.

not only that, but what else got me thinking is the fact that the majority of our skylines are twodoors...

how the f**k is the person in the back going to easily get out if the two in the front were unconcious (worse yet dead)

sent chills down my spin, certainly a wake up call

damn impressed in how that car held up though.... trusty beemer

Skylines also hold up pretty well in major accidents from what i've seen, which is good though. My ex-gf managed to wrap her 32 around a tree - looking at the car its lucky she came with only very minor injuries as the front end was slammed, but the ****pit held up very well (as they should), protecting the occupants.

Yer, i'd definitely be weary getting in the back of a 2door with somebody driving crazy after reading that. Imagine being trapped in the back.. while there is that quick release, like whistla said, if a person in the front is unconscious or dead, or the seat has twisted - you're trapped. Then again, cars very seldom explode in accidents, and also, you can just as easily be trapped in a 4 door when the rear doors warp into the chasis (pretty common). In that situation it may as well be a 2 door anyhow.

KowP - The photos Merli provided are not of the fatal accident mentioned. It is another driver (quoted in Merli's post) who had the pictured accident a few weeks earlier on the same stretch of road.

But as you say - if I had to pick a car to have an accident in, a BMW would be right up there.

It's funny reading the whole BMW forum thread about it - the posts seem to be more concerned about who to blame and the resulting legalities than the fact that someone has died and looking forward to ways this can be best prevented in future. Something I'm glad to see is not the case here.

Let's just hope that's one aspect of American society we don't take on board.

MattyB... I agree !

I 'granny drive' when there is someone else in the car (even if it's a mate egging me on), because I don't want to be responsible for anything happening to them !

On the other hand, I used to give my car a bit of stick when I was alone, but I have a pregnant g/f now and I don't want my kid to grow up without a Father ! Plus, last Friday 3/10/2003, my Gran was burried.

Death is a VERY sad part of life, but a part that will affect us all in one way or another...

Condolences to Jame's family and friends... RIP

Hi guys,

Totally agree with you lot, someone died God Dammit, stupid woman should have been licked by a few flames herself(disrespectful bitch).

Deep feelings go out to all involved, from something that started out as a cruise with the boys,to a complete nightmare they'll never forget!

Looks like the Bimmer boys are having a bad week:-
