This is my first time on these boards so my apologies if this is in the wrong spot or has been asked a hundred times before.

I live in Canberra and am looking to purchase an R33 GTS Skyline next year. Only problem is I'll only be 18 years old by then (and male...), and most insurance companies don't want anything to do with me cause of it.

The best quote i could get was $3,515 a year from 'Young and Cool' and was wondering if anyone else here is my age (or under 25) which insurance company you're with, and how much it costs yearly to insure.

Anyways, thanks in advance to anyone who answers. Later.

I got quoted 3200 with Justcars Insurance

www.justcarinsurance.com.au

Thats with ECR33 GTST 1994 @ $19K

Im in brisbane btw,

We got them to do a quote for my dad to insure... get this!

Full comprehensive... $908!!!!!!!!!

F@cking cheap!

Im going to get him to insure and register under his name for a few months till i save to get it myself, he will be driving it during that time .. ofcourse :D

$3200 with just car? those $@#$!!! I rang them this morning they told me $4366 for a turbo and $4166 for a non-turbo. i wanted to reach down the phone line and strangle the guy... anyways, i lodged an online quote for a $16k GTS, just waiting for them to get back to me, cause i got quoted $4233 for a turbo on the online quote...

Well, i called Famous, and they said i must be 18 and a half at least to insure with them cause they claim a lot of people have crashed and had to make claims under that age...

I must say tho, and taking those people who have respect for Famous into account, I'm not to convinced by the way they do business, being able to pull figures out of the air. As someone said in another forum, it sounds a little unproffesional.

That said tho, I will probably end up going with either them or Just Car when the time comes.

There was another way i could insure it and i would just like some feedback on this. The car (R33 GTS or GTS-t, dunno yet) is going to be my 18th Bday present from my parents, so i don't have to pay for it, but my dad suggested putting the insurance in his name WITHOUT me on the policy, even tho it'll be my car. Then, if i have an accident i just pay the excess on the claim.

This way instead of being charged over $3k it will only cost a little over a grand.

Would that work? Any suggestions?

Yeah, make sure you read all the fine print. Most insurers who will insure import 'turbo' cars, will have exclusions for drivers who are under 25 and NOT named on policy. Meaning that u cant just say it was your only time that you have driven it. Sounds like a good idea, but if it was easily done, then most of us (in Syd, Mel) wouldnt be paying 3k+ for insurance

Insurance companies arent fools.

Maybe the GTS will be a different story as it is non-turbo.

I agree with 95GTST - definitely read the fine print. I did and it saved a lot of hassle.

I was going to swap to Famous cos they were slightly cheaper than Just Cars but when I read the policy it said that the car was not covered if I happened to leave it on the street within 500m of my house after 11pm at night (the chances of me doing that are slim anyway, but who wants to risk it) and there was also a clause about the car not being left in public parking spaces between 11pm and 7 or 8am, hence I stayed with Just Cars because I do drive my car everywhere and leave it sometimes!! :P

Just be careful!

Thanks to everyone so far... I am curious about the 'exclusions' for a turbo with an under 25 year old driving it who isn't named... mainly in regards to Just Car insurance, does anyone know if they will exclude me because it's a turbo if i have an accident? Thanks again.

its not necessarily also only yr age dude.

im 18. was 18 when i bought the car and will be 19 in 1 mnths time.

im paying 2600 with HBF(Hospital Benefit Fund) for FULL comprehensive insurance.

its also yr neighbourhood etc etc.

:P

    • Update time!  The JZX110 had some maintenance needing to be done, so a lot of the seals with replaced to fix some oil leaks. Also used this opportunity to whack on a front mount that I'd bought some time ago.  I also finally got the rear lip painted and fitted.  I then got the exhaust done. It's just a catback for now. Custom made 3" stainless with a turn down. I could have a tip coming out, but it will require cutting the rear lip and possibly the bumper itself. So far I do like and it's made the car a little more zippy.  Close out with some nice pictures of the cars and a sneak peek of what's next.

    • Just something I found searching for more info on Emotion R, apparently the ECR33 Skyline GTS25t was either originally black, or there were two of them, the black one being the original demo car, then building a white one which was part of the 1997-onwards (to at least 2008!) Cockpit Tatebayashi Tokyo Auto Salon booth demo cars. It appears that Emotion R closed down in 2008 and was declared bankrupt in 2010: http://bank-db.com/hasan/208365.
