Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I'm thinking about buying a Skyline 1989 GTS-4, im new to the skyline scene so yer i need to know

what a good price is and what i need to look for when doing the exception. I'm also going to have

a mechanic look at it if I cant seem to find anything wrong with it.

The car as stated before is a 1989 Skyline GTS-4.

4 doors

Turbo

120*** Km's

Auto

The guy is asking $7000 but i knocked him down to $6000

Just want to know your guys opinion on this car and if this is a good price.

Also a question for the people that have a GTS-4 who is your insurance company?

Thanks :nyaanyaa:

ok ive found and read the " New To The Skyline Scene?" topic and read most of it and found what to look for when

buying a skyline it was quite the good read.

But im still stuck with wondering if I'm paying the right price for one?

So a little help here guys with if its good value or not would be great, i will be getting some photos of the car tonight and will be

chucking them up so you can have a look at the condition of it.

Cheers

Redbook tends to put (sometimes rather unrealistically) rather low values on most cars, but auto Skylines are generally worth a lot less than the manual ones. I imagine an auto GTS-T or GTS-4 w/ RB20 would also be extremely slow, hence making them cheaper.

Well RB20DET (not a great deal of power, needs to be revved to make power, not very torquey) + extra weight + auto = not the fastest thing out.

Test drive it, then test drive a manual, even a GTS-T.

Slow compared to another Skyline (non turbo aside).

I have a 32 4 door GTS-4, they are not super quick but they are a nice car...i have a 34 turbo on it and arc side mount with exhaust...very bad down low but better over 3-4000 rpm. for what i want it for its perfect (even though i have an RB30 block on the work bench at home) i also pay $1100 a year for full comprehensive insurance with Famous

    • The autos suck. Anyone with an auto wants to go manual. Also, the one thing you don't really need to change is the dash. You don't really need to know (on the dash) what gear position you have selected. What you do have to change is the tailshaft, a bunch of wiring, probably gearbox crossmember, a bunch of fiddly shit like the spigot bearing in the back end of the crank, find a flex plate and a converter, etc. A whole lot of pain. Most of those autos have been rightfully put into metal recycling bins, so they're not exactly easy to find either.
    • Appreciate it man, gives me hope based on my Google searches on availability of GTR parts.  When you say I'm "not going to," is this in the vein of "who on earth would want auto," or more "it's impossible?" Not trying to be rude, truly don't understand haha. I know, it'd be a madman move to go manny to auto, but if it IS my only option, I'd be curious on the lift.
    • Where's the other half?
    • Shit's f**ked. Looks like there might be a crack to the intake valve seat on the opposite side of the chamber also. Defo pull the whole thing down. Nothing good can come from just doing the head on a motor with comp figures that low anyway. You'll hate yourself less in the long run.
    • Well hit the first larger snag in the build!    Car wasn’t running 100% right even before I took it for a drive, starting slow and felt like a bit of a miss so compression tested it once I got it into the garage and on stands for the winter.   That would do it…   Got to tearing everything out and was greeted with this   Seat looks a little mangled but somehow the cylinder is fine   Will check the turbine next wonder if the piece made its way in there and chewed up some fins.    Once I survey the extent of the head damage I’m going to have to make a decision. Cylinder 4 is kind of low anyway so might not be a bad idea to take a peek at the bottom end while I’m already in it
