Yeah sorry my bad. The series 1 & 2 stageas run at 7-8psi (i used to own a s2). You're quite correct - the M35 is about 0.8 bar.

1bar is definitely too high for these turbos...given the number of posts on here about the stock ceramic turbo (skylines, earlier stageas) disintegrating around 14psi. I'm assuming the turbos, if not the same, are very similar to that of the earlier stageas?

The M35 turbo is quite unique. IE. nothing like it at all.

It is a ceramic turbine but ball bearings on the shaft.

It seems that most of the turbo problems have happened after our very hot summer. There seems to be merit in the larger intercooler. I am told that the turbo is in such a tight space and close to the engine that heat tends to be it's undoing.

It is not described as the most efficient turbo but it does suite the purpose on this engine quite well.

Cheers

Andy

I'll just add another question to the thread :D .

I've seen a few photos of custom/aftermarket exhaust system for the M35 and are wondering what the extra pipe/cylinder is on the main pipe is just before the main pipe ducts back over to the muffler. I gather it's some type of noise damper? I've also seen an extra bit of pipe in one of the front downpipe photos as well?

Photos I'm talking about are here: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/St...amp;hl=axis+m35

Cheers.

Yep, it is a resonator to help keep the Fujitsubo Legalis under JASMA sound limits.

The "extra" pipe is on the dump and is a pretty standard way of doing them, don't ask me why, I don't know.

I would have thought that a bellmouth design would have been more efficient.

Cheers for the reply.

So going the custom exhaust I would need to fit a couple more resonators and a good muffler to keep the noise down when not having the Fujitsubo Legalis design?

Not necessarily. The Kakimoto exhaust (forgot the name) uses a mid muffler (not large) instead of the resonator to keep it quiet.

When I say quiet, I mean ~88db with the stock dump & front pipe.

If you happen to put a de-cat front pipe on (like I have - there is still a cat on the OE dump), the volume will increase but you get a lovely deep burble. Luckily for me the Fujitsubo still keeps it under control.

Just in case you did not read it in another thread, my exhaust consists of the stock dump, Kakimoto front pipe and Fujitsubo exhaust.

Great setup, high flow, great sound, but will set you back quite a bit with the current exchange rate.

What was the improvement like, better response, petrol bill? :D

I have a good friend who can build me a nice custom setup, does a lot of work on the Skyline as he owns one himself. He should be able to sort a good setup for the Stagea.

Thanks.

Response was the same up until 3500rpm, although I was able to have a lighter foot when going uphill.

Boost increases from 0.8bar to >1bar at 3600rpm and pulls strong all the way to redline.

Petrol bill is about the same.

Went from 9.3km/L to 9.1km/L on my old route to work... but that may be because I just wanted to open it up more often :D

Economy now sits at 8.3km/L with only short burst driving (lots of lights & round abouts).

On the whole, wouldn't change a thing.

The engine spins alot more freely, power is made with less effort (particularly torque) and it sounds ace.

Only thing I would change if I could, would be a free-er flowing dump (with cat).

  • 2 weeks later...

Picked up my Stagea a couple of days ago and drove it back home for a good 450km's.

Quick impression:

These things eat motorways no problem :( .

Low down grunt makes it so easy to drive.

Handling is pretty good for a large wagon, bit of roll at the start then stays flat.

Plenty of room inside.

The model I have is the 250T RS Four with leather interior.

Few marks on the front and rear bumper and interior that will need sorting but in pretty good order.

Things planned are towbar, full 3" exhaust and open up the airbox. Will post some photos later.

Will be posting up a few more question about bits (after I've done a search  )

    • Appreciate the feedback. It is street car, but not a daily. Last week I got a quote from a good exhaust shop for a decat, one which is bolt-on, bolt-off to be easily replaceable. I got quoted for around €150. I usually do push the motor, but I wasn't in this case to make sure that no damage is done until I get the cat sorted. I think it's best to also ask the exhaust shop for the other option and see what they can do. If (big if) I were to decat though, would it be best to tune the car or would the stock ECU handle it? As far as I know, the stock ECU is not tunable and that would require additional purchases.
    • As above, definitely bash it or get it replaced with a high flow unit.
    • get some flares on them, or wider guards haha
    • Another question sorry, what stainless do u use in the turbo external WG plumb back piping? Is it 321, 316 or 304?
    • Right, its been a while for updating this car, but I made some small but important progress today. In the end I bought an Ecutek dongle from the Australian distributor Tunehouse (for local hardware support) but have gone with a remote tune from Racebox in the US (because they have done millions of these, and I could not find any tuner where I could access the tune anyway as they are all password locked). The App is reasonably easy to work with, but the PC software reminds me of Haltech's ECU Manager that you need to use with the Plat Pro ECUs, it is a nightmare.  Anyway, I sent the details over, got back a tune file and a request for data logs. I finally got a chance to access a private test track today as they want redline logs in 3rd and 4th, and have sent them back for the first round of reviews. The main difference in the tune is going from 1.0 (stock) to 1.3 bar (19psi), although I'm sure is a lot of other stuff in the background. Keeping in mind this is a dead stock car with 125,000klm, this is what the App's performance test claimed: Before After Interesting to note that both 400m tests had the same terminal speed (158klm/h) but different ETs. And no, the speed limiter seems to be higher than that at 186kl/h. Summary of the key logged parameters for the 3rd and 4th gear runs were: Those little turbos were certainly whizzing at 200,000rpm+.  Also I'm really not that excited about oil pressure 55psi at redline so I think I'll go thicker than 5w30 (nissan recommend 0w20....) and see if that improves it. Other than that (and the big boost spike....) everything looks good as a start to me.
