Hi all,

I took my car to great ocean road lately and i gave it a good run - lots of 2nd and 3rd gear action around the bends and hills.

I noticed when I decelerated from higher revs (in a lower gear) there were sometimes muffled crackling/popping noises from my exhaust - personally find the sound pretty cool.

My mates in the car behind say there were no puffs of smoke or flames coming from my car.

I just wanna confirm if this is normal.

R34 - NA - tiptronic - with hi-flow filter, extractors and hi-flo cat - rest of the engine and exhaust is stock.

Cheers

mine used to do it with normal ngk spark plugs which in fact rooted my spark plugs used to back fire as loud as a gun and pop flames jsut unburnt fuel mines pretty much stock exhassut apart from cannon and a decat hehe shhh but i bought $129 bosch umtimate spark plugs doesnt backfire ne more

Saying shhh about the decat doesn't hide the plates in your disp pic..

yeah my car does it aswel i think it is the plugs tho, i havent had mine changed in a while..but mine is a auto and when ever i release the accelerator at certain revs it makes a lil pop..i too sorta like it.specially when i rock up to lights and down shift sometimes and my exhaust just rumbles tuff and bit of a pop =]

I get this too on my R34 GTT but mostly before the engine has warmed up properly .. I don't think this is a coilpack issue, I think it has to do with the richness of the air/fuel mix .. most stockies run too rich (I know mine did) plus before the engine is warm I think it runs richer than when at operating temps hence my popping issues on downshifting.

Well normally i think means you gotta get your Coil packs looked at .. how old are yours?

Everything has been recently replaced, about 3 months ago...

The car runs perfectly fine. Not a single issue. It's just this time cause i was driving spiritedly - I'm usually very tame when driving.

Its the air/fuel mixture ratio. All it is, is that your either got too much air running through the engine or your to rich in fuel. I learnt this because almost all dirt bikes go through this.

Maybe clean your intake and wipe your spark plugs to see if it fixes it. It wont harm your engine if your running rich so you dont have to worry.

check the rear quater on exhaust for blow-by  mine is plentiful

No blowby "stains" on the back of the car - however i got heaps around the oil cap and PCV area... *brings out de-greaser and rag*

Thats about right.

Since you took it to the GOR for a good (or I should say Spirited...) run, you would have been giving it full throttle majority of times...

More fuel = Need more air to equal out the Air/Fuel mixture.

stock exhaust mine never done it, straight 3inch all the time :) loving it, triptonic auto.

sometimes i down gear to soon just so the revs are higher so it really pops and rumbles. sounds pretty cool coming from a wagon

Sounds great at most times actually to be honest  My NA RB25 does it too. Not really concerned.

yeah my girl does it most times aswell, espcially if i take her over 4 grand when changing from say 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd i love it when she does it lol

its good on a cruise through the gorge around hairpins and you are hearing 15 cars one after another start making pop sounds..... love it

    • Haha luckily we don't have emissions, inspections, or any laws against power adders here. They only thing they somewhat keep an eye out for are ridiculously loud exhausts.
    • Just wanted to pop in an update on my setup. The CD swap has been great, I love the mazworks housing for the overall simplicity. I ended up sealing my trans tunnel with a thin sheet of aluminum reused some of the holes on the trans tunnel, and laid some window sealing EPS foam around the edges. Works great, really quieted things down and sealed up the car.  As for the power comment. Right now I am also running about 650whp. with the way the bell housing is attached to the face of the transmission I have zero doubts it would be fine, mainly because the input shaft and main shaft bearings are seated into the bell housing adapter. This means the load is NOT on the bolts to maintain the power, rather into he casing of the bell housing; Yes the bolts are doing some work there, but with both shafts locked in zero worries.  End of the day, the Mazworks solution is the easiest and safest. no need to take your trans to a shop to get milled perfectly, it fits with minimal clearancing, and you can use all your existing clutch and flywheel.  Driving wise the CD has been great compared to the big box, I'll probably swap my final drive at some point. The serial 9 shifter is gooooood, my only qualm is how tight it is, it takes a fair bit to get use to, 5th and 6th are a bit eh/hard to find at times, but maybe I need re-adjusting, and I think my clutch master is very tired and needs a rebuild.
    • If you are keen, have a look at my build thread. Car is for sale for the right money or straight swap for a F80 M3 LCI.
    • Welcome mate.  No point in over thinking it, buying any one of those cars you mentioned is not a smart or logical choice with the availability of many "better" (re price to performance) cars available to you.  The heart wants what the heart wants, buy whatever it leads you too.
    • Hey everyone! Im so grateful to be apart of this community and ill do my best to be apart of this. Firstly, i'm not disclosing my real name due to in real life circumstances surrounding my privacy and public image (sorry lol) Secondly, The only thing personal I am willing to share is that I'm from Sydney and a descendant of one of Sydneys largest mortgage firms. I got gifted my first ever car, a 2022 Porsche Cayenne and I love it to death. Ive been driving it for about 5 or 6 months now and honestly Im so grateful for my parents for gifting me this vehicle. However recently I've been working my ass off to afford my second car (which I need help deciding soooooo community help me out please?). Once decided, im planning to try modify it myself. Recent I've been thinking about getting a Skyline, particularly a 25GT or GT-V, yes I know overrated as hell, but I'm also considering a Chaser which I recently came to love. However my dream is to one day own a 180SX (So hard to find clean versions and im not really into importing).  Lastly before I send this off, I want to apologize if I sound tacky or pretentious. I try not to and want to genuinely learn from everyone and anyone. (Im no expert in this area) Thanks for reading!
