hey guy, a i have an asus m70sa for sale its a king lappy

anyway i want to build a desktop again... but im going to go all out. ive got half the money here ready. the rest i will get after i sell my laptop..

its going to be an expensive build but id rather spend it on this than do what i want to do to my car (not practical as i will be moving interstate etc dont want headaches)

Since you are going all out, get another GTX-295 & run them in SLI , most X-58 chipset based mobos can support both SLI & Cross Fire.

Optical drive? Blue ray burner if you are going all out.

Forget about liquid cooling unless you want insane Overclocks with the CPU. But get a decent after market air cooler for the CPU.

SLI is nvidia's way of connecting 2 graphics card together & running them together for performance boost. In your case running 2x GTX 295s is like running 4 video cards, since each GTX 295 has two GPUs running in SLI on a single PCB.

LOL, are you serious?!

Anyway its your $, but if you are gonna be running 2x GTX295s, then get a higher resolution monitor (or get 2 monitors & run dual screen). A single GTX 295 can pretty much eat any game at HD resolution.

So you won't be using all the processing power of 2 GTX295s by just running them in one 1920x1200 screen.

Dunno where you're from but I buy all my stuff from computer fairs, usually very cheap and don't have to pay for shipping.

So see if you can find a local computer fair.

And if you are going all out, why not get a VelociRaptor as your system hard drive - or even a SSD...

I'm guessing money is no object, however, going with the most expensive isn't always better.

Are you planning to do benchmark o/c? If you're not, IMO can't justify all of the costs and choices on the build list. Do some more research before you fork the $$$. For starters:

CPU – is the i7 965 absolutely necessary?? the other i7's with a light o/c will perform just as well. Also, with the difference saved you could buy the next gen of Intel processors (ie. Gulftown) as it will have the LGA1366 platform, meaning that X58 mobo should be fully compatible.

Case - if cooling, functionality and looks is a priority there are better and cheaper options (eg. CoolerMaster ATCS 840, Lian Li PC80, SilverStone TJ07)

CPU heatsink - the CM V10 is a monstrosity, again there's some that can do the job which are half the weight and price (eg. TRUE 120e). Alternatively, if the budget allows or with the money saved....there is water cooling or even phase change cooling.

Key board & mouse? add another $200 for some decent ones, my G15 gaming keyboard is quite nice and goes for $99, also there is the new microsoft wireless gaming mouse for about $100 as well you may as well invest in.

As aweinspiring that system is, its just not needed with todays tech, i am still maxing out most of games on the old 9800GTX grafics card and dual core, might be better instead of going the i7 at the moment to get everything you listed except for it, save yourself a grand or so in doing so and pick up a very nice high end quad core in the process.

Can the i7 motherboards still run the old quad cores and dual cores as well, or is it just specific for i7's?

Oh yeah +1 for the blu ray burner as well! I havent got one but i wouldnt mind one!

No, i7 is 1366 socket, Core2 Quad/Duo are 775 socket

Depends what res the screen you use is 25GTT, 1900x1200 on say Far Cry2 with all the fruit would have your 9800 maxed before you even load the game

I'd get a i7 920, and wait for the revision and so on at the end of the year which should bring some pretty crazy stuff processor wise given the performance of i7 so far

I7 makes a difference in gaming when your up @ 2500x resolutions, tri-sli and things like that when the CPU is the bottleneck, benching and so on.

atm the moment hardly any games would take full advantage of a i7 vs the dollars

a low end i7 build is no question the way to go if your doing a new build, or hold off 5 months and then the refresh is almost out (same for GPU's using DX11)

You will be correct, theres not much difference in gaming in i-7 compared to current Core 2 Duo/Quads.

The i-7's main strength is its raw CPU processing power, which is mainly used in stuff like heavy video encoding, where it pwns pretty much every other mainstream CPU there is.

But seeing how the OP's is already getting the fastest GPU currently available (GTX-295) & his going all out, he might as well pair the card with the mostly insane performance CPU on the market (also insanely price LOL)

Rumor has it DirectX 11 will began to emerge sometime next year according to the whirlpool forums.

On a side note, AMD's new Phenom II range is getting pretty good, they now offer comparable performance to the intel Core 2 range & is priced decently to match. Whirlpool's favourite budget gaming CPU seems to be the AMD's tri-core phenom II 720, as it has the added bounes of a unlocked mulitpier for easier OCs & its priced very well compared to the Intel C2D E8xxxs.

Might be something for the OP to consider if he decides not to go insanely overboard with his new Comp

Only the 'BE' has a unlocked multi in the AMD 720 - its also a good budget/interim i agree, and then you can convert into a wicked media box in 12 months

hey thanks for all the info guys!!! like i said its been f**king ages since ive built one, so i am doing my reading up... im still going to blow the same amount of money on this computer. i just want to do it correctly.

and i can see people sayin "these cheaper options do just the same"

well you can say that with everything... car parts, tv's anything. also with most of the people sayin they can get stuff half price, can you do anything for me even if i pay 3/4 of the price and u keep 1/4 lol

either way i still want to build a beast. i think i need to do some reading up on whats coming out etc! this build wont be done soon, might take a few months, but im going to buy everything at once! rather than buya part here wait buy the next only to see a new version of it come out!!!

if you guys dont mind when it comes to the crunch when im closer to purchasing it ill post up exactly what im getting. and then you guys tell me what you think.... so far i want to stay on this track unless theres some new shit that i dont know about coming out

**BUT** - i really dont wanna see you spending 4k on a PC that (in all honesty) is going to offer next to ZERO benefit over a build around the 2.5k marker

2.5k marker is basically where its at for a high-spec PC at present... and then plan to change the CPU in around Feb next year (if you wanna keep it hammering at the high end)

You'll see some places charging 5-7k for these "ultimate" systems, but I assure you it can be build for much less using the same parts, or ones that offer the same performance and better value.

eg: The CPU cooler you've chosen, whilst the most expensive... its not the best. The best is around $100 cheaper for i7 (your prices above are wrong too btw, not sure how you got em wrong lol)
