Heya,

Am thinking bout rebuilding my engine but the quotes ive been given this week are ridiculous, so im thinking of building up my own rb30 bit by bit and eventually drop it in the car.

What i want to know is who here has done it and can give me some guidance if i require it? I've researched it a bit (not enough to go and do it right away) but want to know if you guys have had any specific issues with it? Only chasing 250-300kw and have heard of people doing it on stock bottom ends, how safe is this? What are some places people had experience with machining etc. if i want to rebuild it with fogies etc.

My goal is to have a responsive and reliable motor for track and hill climb, therefore power is not the biggest issue.

Budget $2,500 - $3,000

(ps, its in SA section because i want to get local opinions and answers)

ummmmmmmmmmm.........u wont get 1 built that cheap, you will need atleast double or triple that

contact nisspeed or lewis engines

its not as easy as u think, theres a lot things u need to factor in

RB30 Stock internal bottom ends start at NZD$4,000 rwd or $5,000 4wd (suit up to 600hp and 7200 rpm)

$4000nzd = 3,243.59 AUD and shipping fron NZ is about 400-450

at least with rips put your money into the main part a short motor and use your gear to get it up and running if your mechanically minded and have a daily then it shouldn't be too hard to follow online manuals there are plenty about

Son an RB30DET would be a responsive motor with the right turbo

key to me spending 2.5-3k is I'm doing it myself. i know that obviously no one is gonna build me one that cheap, there's a lot of labor in it.

I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to this either, I've had experience in rebuilding a volvo turbo motor as well as a rubbish vt ecotec through tafe so have a pretty good idea of how things are done.

Reason why do it with an rb30?

1. torque

2. bigger displacement is always a good thing

3. matched with the right turbo and set up properly it would give me better results than doing the same with an rb25

4. rebuilding my motor (rb25) myself would cost roughly the same

5. id rather have my car running as long as it can while i build a motor for it

AFAIK his 240Z engine still runs the standard block, crank and crank girdle. So no it's not the 20K version as that engine has an aftermarket full crank girdle with billet main caps.

TX3 i still don't think you are going to be able to do it for 2.5>3K. Pistons and rods you'd be looking at nearly 2K (if your going to do it properly) having said that the i think SPOOL do a piston and rod kit for around the $1400 mark for an RB30 bottom end. machining and balancing (balancing need to be 110% with a long stroke engine like an RB30) you'd be looking at another $3-500 ARP studs for mains and head studs $2-300 full gasket kit $300, decent turbo like a GT3071 or 76R your looking at $1700-2200 etc, etc. and these are just parts

EDIT!! No i was wrong about the spool package it's $2190 not $1400 (thats more like the CA price)

you're choice but if you shop around you'll find that it's cheaper than you think to rebuild the rb25! jjr selling autech rods are around $700-800 mark and cp pistons from jjr $1200 and these are just examples so you do the maths if it'll be roughly the same price!

on another note when running rb30 bottom and rb25 head does it get bored out? and by how much?

you should buy a blown engine n build that 1 up, that way u can stiil drive your car until its built, and if u get defected u can drop your old engine back in

ive got the perfect turbo for it sitting at home, a garrett gt30/40 with .82 external gate exhausting housing, cubes uses the same turb on his rb25/30 i think but is interl gate

No 25, 26 and 30 bores are all 86mm so there is no boring required unless you are using a 20 head. With the 25 head you have to do something about the oil feed for the VTC but there are a few solutions if you look around.

When i build mine i'll be using a 26 head as it is already solid and you don't have to play around with any oil galleries (apart from what you already have to do in the 26's i.e. restrictors and such) i will be retapping the block to take the bigger head studs that the 26 uses but there is some debate about doing this.

P.S. i though cubes used a GT3071R??

so nothing to do with displacement? just longer strokes is where the extra torque comes from?

i have thought about this also, well still thinking about all this stuff, hence why i made a thread to see who has actually done it in SA. Anyone keen to take me for a short spin :D? Really keen to find out what the response and driveability are like.

longer stroke also = more displacement......even if you don't touch the bores.

seriously though, unless you have access to internal & external micrometers, plasti-gauge, torque wrenches, etc or understand the importance of sequences, preparation for initial fire up and absolute cleanliness.......don't even think about assembling your own motor.

    • Man, different parts but the same numbers is terrible @dbm7! And it doesn't help that most online shops don't list the part numbers at all. They just give a list of compatible models...
    • Slow when hot could also be because its getting more dynamic compression, OR things are getting a bit tighter once it is all expanded. If it were an earthing issue, typically I'd expect you to have it have issues all the time. Unless it's really a combination of both things. Where the higher compression, and things being a bit tighter, is giving that bit of extra load and you do need a slight clean up on the cables/connections.
    • Yeah, this is one of the most annoying things about nissan part numbers... I've got an unrelated example... Image is of the AT output shaft ~ they have the same part#, but clearly the shaft on the left is beefier design to that on the right ...the difference (essentially) is the 'lighter' shaft on the right, is for engines up to RB25DE (this includes RB20 variants) : the shaft on the left is for RB25/26DET(T)....are they interchangeable? Yes...but obviously one shaft is going to be stronger than the other...and, the lighter shaft is around USD115, but the heavier shaft closer to USD150...same part#... ...epc-data usually tells a tale ~ the amayama listing for 39100-23U60 has a note "Longest side is between 60 and 105 cm" ; no such info is there for 39100-23U70 ...and given the great disparity in price between the 2 parts, it makes me at least curious (to the point of caution) where the 'extra money' went? ...ie; these 2 parts have a cost difference that (to myself at least) isn't explained by 'plastic boot'...ie; with amayama there's AUD700 price difference ...plastic versus rubber?...I'm not seeing it like that...and 60cm ~ 105cm...??...that's a huge disparity....something hinky going on here... I'd try searching by VIN, not model... /2cents
    • I don't know for sure, but I'd expect them all to be interchangeable given the diff end and hub end don't move/change between any C34 series. Often Nissan will change part numbers and the aftermarket follows those year ranges; but the original part number change doesn't mean other parts won't fit. The change could be a change in material, internal parts or even just supplier. For example, all the RB gearbox to engine bolts are no longer available and there is a new part number instead. The only change is they went from cadmium plated bolts to zinc plated due to the issues manufacturing with Cadmium. They look different but work the same.
    • One year is a bit concerning. Did you try contacting GSP? It says 5 year warranty on the box if I remember correctly. I'm also running their driveshafts on my S2 Stagea.   You could check the part numbers on Amayama for your year. Here's the link for my 1998 which gives the 39100-23U60 part number.
