Just getting it off the ground in SA will be a big enough challenge... :) No reason why I shouldn't aim high though. I personally would like to see nation-wide regs for registration and roadworthies first...none of this "it's legal in that state, but not here, you need a new engineer's certificate" stuff...

Maybe I should wait for the next Road Safety minister to be inducted before I schedule a meeting time lol

i understand this is a late reply.. but..

id like to do a driver course, or my cams license, any place in sa?

also, wouldnt it make you more cockier on the road knowing you can control a car alot better?

i dont go stupid anways, but you never know when something bad could happen.

I can add that this sort of training is invaluable.

When I was 18, and had my license for 2 years I thought I was king s**t. My dad then paid for me to do a defensive driver trianing course developed by CAMS in association with Mercedes. I went out to Mallala at 8am where I was met by a group of driving instructors and a lecture room. We spent the first hour going through the theory of correct driver positioning, vehicle control of various driver positions, and some basic road craft. We then went out for a first track session (1 hr) and again back to the class room for another 30 min of theory. This repeated (1-1.5 hr driving, 30 min theory) for the rest of the day - and at the end of the day I drove away realising far more about car control than I ever had before.

Not once in the day did we go excessively fast, learn about the race lines or anything that I initially thought I may get out of the day. From the day I learn emergency car control in ALL sorts of conditions. Since the course I can guarantee the training has saved my life at least once (due to another drivers idiocy the accident almost occured, and due to my training it didnt). Anyone who thinks advanced (go-fast) courses may hold more value for them than a defensive course - you are fooling yourselves.

The defensive driver training Kristian is emphasising here is the best way forward for ALL motorists on our roads - young and old. Best of luck Kristian, and if I can help out with anything let me know.

Cheers

Lee

certainly agree. before i was aloud to even think about putting a rb20det into my vl wagon dad got me to do a defensive driving coarse.it certainly gave me alot to think about especially then.I also think alot of the theory aspects of the motorbike liscence coarse were priceless.

Things have kind of stalled a little, which is very disappointing from my perspective, but it comes from a slight difference of opinion regarding how much support should be offered (or needed) to help get things off the ground. At the heart of the problem is that others expect me to start the whole thing and then they'll support me, but I don't have the time or the funds while Iron Chef Imports is under strain with a slowed economy, both here and in Japan.

I haven't abandoned it all together, but I'm holding off till we know for sure that the Drag strip/Motorplex is going to go ahead, then I'll sit down with the owners and have some more serious discussions.

    • Yea the photos aren't the best. When I was pulling the bumper and headlights out there was a bodyshop guy looking on for it, there is a slight bend behind where the passenger headlight is, but we're talking a few MM and there is a little bit of a bend for the reo. That said it's supposedly well within the "Drill a hole in it and pull it out with a slide hammer to be close enough" and be on our way. The other option is to buy a GTR reo for the GTR bumper bits but this is a $2000+ fix for something Mr Hammer can probably do 99% of the job for and everything will/can line up pretty closely-to-good-enough.
    • That's a write off for sure... Part out? 😛 I kid. It looks like the rad support has a minor minor bend in it too where the rep support sits near. Could just be the photos (and me not wearing my glasses right now). Worst case is you can buy a new radiator support, have it swapped over, and leave the car in paint jail for 12 to 18 months while you build the motor to handle twin turbos or a Harrop SC...
    • It seems the definition of "Gregging" something might need to be expanded?
    • This is why I suggested that there is really nothing that can safely be done in the engine bay at this budget level. Just the work to reassure yourself that the engine won't instantly crap itself the moment the boost gets turned up will wear out the piggy bank long before the first turbo gets installed. Spend $10k and still not have any extra performance? My tip is a version of our standard advice from 15 years ago about buying a GTR, which is not to buy one unless you can afford to buy two. The new version is not to modify a GTR unless you have all the funds required to do it all at once, properly, and enough to rebuild it after it blows up.
    • Oh, I forgot to mention this before.  It is accepted that your taking on risk buy turning up the power on a 30 year old stock motor. You can lower the risk with the ECU engine protection, but this is more money on sensors. CAN wideband, oil temp, oil pressure, coolant pressure, fuel pressure, air temp, etc. It adds up quick.  I am a huge fan of running all of the engine protection the ECU offers. You'll have to decide for yourself how you want the engine protection setup and what you think is worth monitoring.
