I know what you mean, and i think its good fun to stick it up the non believers! I have similar goals but not quite as quick as yours. At the moment my car is pretty quick for a Datsun. It'd be great to be just pretty quick amoungst the more modern cars. I definately know that its a learning process and the more time in the seat can't be a bad thing along with refinements along the way. It is a bummer that from when i started to now so many of the cars that used to go along to track days aren't there anymore.

forget SAU vs WRX club, next track is gonna be GTR vs those who dont value traction! :D

haha

"those who dont value traction"

or maybe those who actually have enough skill with there right foot to control the traction

instead of running all scared and buying a GTR ?!

This thread is classic...

Love the stirring of the pot...

Bring it on princess..... :)

I now have P.I. worked out so Sandown will be next. I'll be trying my hardest to be a Santeenager b4 some 2ltr pretender :D

hehehe, i love it. Goliath seems to be intimidated by David ;)

all i can say it that chasing times at sandown is garbage. of course there is time to be made at each end of the drag strip, but really, of all the tracks in Vic its the worst to compare anything except power.

I say we have our own 'Sthuperlap' at winton on the 18th july. Lets see who can do what then...

Yeh Sandown is a couple of drag strips, but there is still a lot of time in driving the place. The fact that the straights are so long means it is mega important to get onto them well and carry all that speed down the straights. It also means you have to nail the sharp 90 deg bends and carry as much corner speed as you can. Then there is the back kink up to Dandy where again there is lots of time to be had...and panels to be damaged. Following the guys who have done more laps then me they smash me through there, i recall watching Matt in the R34 catch a lot of time on me there...i just have not got my head around how to get my car into and through that corner yet with the 30 or so laps i have done at the place.

I think if you trivialise Sandown as just two drag strips you sell it well short of how challenging it is. At PI you get lost mid corner or corner entry then you have enough track and enough time to get it right and not compromise the exit, you just lose a bit of mid corner or entry speed. At PI a lot of it is hp as well as you are entering the straight at 180km/h so takes a lot of hp to punch a hole in the air. I am only 10km/h quicker down the straight at PI even though i enter the straight at about 100km/h quicker and the straight is down hilll and longer :)

So, each track has its challengers, and PI helps the rwd guys rather then helping the underpowered guys as with the corner speeds being gso much higher, low speed traction out of corners isnt such a benefit. But you will still get left for dead out of Siberia up the hill through Hayshed if you dont have grunt. You will still get left for dead over 210km/h on the front straight if you dont have grunt.

If you are rwd and dont have grunt then the best track has to be Winton.

And speaking to Mick today, i think 18 July at Winton is perfect for me, as the panel and mechanical work will probably take another 8 or so weeks :D LOL, at Dutton i should have bagged a 36 if not for that F430. So with a few laps it would be great to try and bag a 36 or better ;)

Are you sure this is not just because your car is not as fast as you expected @ sandown?

There are cars with similar or less power than you, that have quicker times than you..

good example being all the dattos... Troy's, Cam's and Leigh is close also.

Yes cam's is a IPRA race car but still it probably makes less power.

and also (touching on what nick said about a IPRA car costing as much as VIC GTRs)

I'm not so sure about that... yes the will have alot of money tipped into them in getting them competition ready

roll cages & other stuff required to competitively race.

But remember too that it is an Improved PRODUCTION class of racing.

Which means you have to have the car in a fairly standard form.

For example Cam's 1600 has standard Datsun running gear (give or take a few tweaks)

suspension all has to be original mounting setups etc.

Guess my point is... a car with possibly less power, and a more basic suspension setup is still faster than alot of other cars out there

Not doubting that it still costs alot of money to setup... its motorsport... thats just how it works..

but i don't think the alot of the IPRA cars would be pushing some of the numbers that the GTR guys are, $$$ wise...

Just my opinion though.. i can't really know that for sure.

Any way don't get me wrong.. its quite evident how much difference power makes @ sandown.

For example.. ryans times of 1.55 @ PI with 160odd rwkw... and a sandown time of 1:30..

and Firmans time in the 180B of 2:04 @ PI and 1:43 @ sandown.

Both good times at PI... but comparitively not so good times at sandown.

I just don't think power is the 'be all and end all' of sandown like ryan seems to.

To me it just see this whole bagging out sandown times thing is a bit of a childish "I can't win so i'm changing the rules" moment.

Didnt Adz bag a 1:26 or 25 in Juz's S15, thats pretty basic car. 180-190rwkws, jap coilover with exhaust, PFC and Intercooler with boost. I think it was running Yoki semis. The S15s are damn good things straight out of the box

Ryan needs to get out of the sandbox and forget about carparks and DECA and do more track work :) OR just bite the bullet ad throw a dirty big turbo on it and boost his way to a better time :D

i call it as i see it. as for cams datto until someone can show me how much power that thing makes i dont care what times it does. i wont be surprised if it isnt much but its hard enough speculating when you do know what something actualy has where as cams could have 220kw give or take 50.

as for the other dattos, what do they weigh? 800-900kg?

i love sandown, it still scares me and i havent reached max anything there yet with the current set up. as you have proven, it is a track that will reward more power and in my mind that isnt a good basis for comparing lap times. that is my argument, i honestly dont care for being quick there. if i could manage a 22 or sub 20 that would be great but i know where to find them.. i know i can puch out much more competitive times elsewhere by using my hands, feet, brain and balls over my wallet.

If you cant get into the 23s at Sandown then i dont think you are going to have the power to get sub 51s at PI. What is the best time at Winton? The weight of your car has to help you there as you would have to be 80-100kgs lighter then my car.

I also suggest you sell the Racetech seat, put back in the Velo, engage brain, use your feet to run down the street and reach for said wallet and bin the HSD supension you have :) While you are at it sell the Garret and get a Greddy turbo. All things 2L go better with Greddy :D

ill let you know shortly.. i want to get it corner weighted etc..

as for winton its a 39 with the old set up.

i would love to get back to pi again this year and put a time down, i have no idea if it will be sub 51 but i knocked off 4 seconds at sandown so... i would imagine it would be similar there too.

edit

stop changing your post damnit hehe. i love my racetech, ill admit its not much different to the velo but it also isnt that much more expensive. HSDs are definantly on the chopping block though. as for turbo... ill wait and see..

I think you have still missed my point... being that sandown is not as much about power as you think it is...

I could see this on saturday when you rocked up and did a practice session showing mick the ropes in your car

so relatively taking it easy, bit of a cruise lap.. and got a 1:29 ( Your previous PB)

And that you were absolutely mortified that it wasn't instantly faster than it was before becuase of your power gains...

In wayz...

as for weight... leigh's car was actually weighed the week leading up to sandown..

Leigh can confirm but i think it tipped the scales @ just over the 1000kg mark.. 1070kg if my memory is correct

Someone can correct me if i am wrong... but i belive the 180sx to be around a 1250kg car... (thanks wikipedia)

Minus all the interior and body deadening i would say yours could be down to around 1150kg

80kg is still 80kg....

but there is not that much in it i don't think....

Either way... the idea of a single track superlap is silly i think...

if you want to sort out who has the best package overall...

then you need some sort of championship held over several different tracks...

haha hang on we already have that :D

Hopefully I will have some time tomrrow night to finish of the results of said championship :)

All good and well, but i have typed enough BS...i seriously need help with storage space. Does anyone know of a safe, secure place i can store a car that i can access at anytime to do work. I am hoping to buy a car but have nowhere to store it as the apartment only has one parking spot :)

...and waits for GTR owners to return and point to the scoreboard :D

edit... Fark me, just looked at those times Corssy posted.

Mini Challenge Cooper S with Grant the Weather man i dont have a broken back right now does a 1:23.9. The R32 Golf time still stands from when i firt moved down from NSW with a time of 1:21.3 from the GT Performance caegory. With an AU Saloon Car doing a 1:24.9!.

So there is a mix bag of cars there, and they are all Production cars with suspension and tyres with minimal power mods.

WOW, this thread has really fired up! It seems like the RWD crew are turning on eachother...

And on the topic of cost of GTR's vs IPRA cars, in the latest Unique Cars magazine there is a IPRA Datsun 120y for 25k, it had an SR in it but considering you can find a donor car down by the creek for nothing it doesn't seem all that cheap. I'd be the first to admit that my car has had heaps of money spent on it, but how else are you going to get a car of that size and weight to go faster than most race cars? And that is with a hack like me driving it!!!

If you have a budget of 10k for a track car of course it's going to be 10 or more seconds slower.

Seems like there is a lot of hatred shown to us guys, but lets be realistic.

Anyway, this might cheer up you RWD guys.

We need a common enemy otherwise we turn on each other. We need more GTR posters. :)

And Hatred? LOL, jealousy on my behalf. You only have to look at that footage to see how much quicker your car is. I dont give a stuff if it has 4 or 6 driven wheels. Quick is quick, and i have a bit more work to do before i can look myself in the mirror...viva la 1:21s :D

Na no hatred at all, its just interesting comparing why things go at different speeds. Watching your car jack its so quick into and out of corners, its like a digital camera - point and shoot. I wish my car was that sticky! its one thing to be light, its another to be well setup to take advantage of that - i'm working on that bit.

My 1600 runs in full street trim no weight reduction at all and tips the scales at 1018kg without me. A stripped out 180sx would be more but not by much i suspect. there is lots of reasons that could point to you being .5 second quicker - better driver, 20 more kws from a bigger torquier turbo, bigger newer wider lower profile tyres, bigger brakes, better chassis and suspension design... or i could just go faster than you and we could all be amazed at the miracle :)

Ryan, PI is not just a power track it has so many long sweeping bends its stupid even suggesting it. corner speed and testicles are king at the island. I'll do some bigger turbo research for you soon too

Well kudos to you guys getting out there and having a go. At the end of the day its all about getting out there and having some fun in a safe and controlled environment.

Budget should not interfere with the fun factor, and ofcourse a little competition wouldn't go astray! It's what keeps us on our toes!

I personally would like to see how a car like mine minus 300kgs would go... I guess we'll find out sooner or later...

Gee and here I was happy with a 1.33 at sandown

first time out, street tyres, only mods swaybars, pod and zorst and boost restrictor removed.

looking forward to gradually modding it and dropping those times.

so long as I keep posting PB's I'll be happy..

herers one right here baby!!! i will just say that when i did my 1.26 around sandown, the car was unchanged from the way it was driven everyday. i simply turned up, put a bit more air in the tyres and went out. it was also my first every run at sandown, and my first ever run in my GTR. the car didnt have a huge amount of mods either, just coilovers and a bit of boost! full interior, so maximum weight (which is heavy!) and brake were stock as a rock (no brembos or nothing...) and my silly federal road tyres...

so i thinks thats not bad!!!

there! now you can tear me to shreads with your come backs! :P

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
    • They do that at random every now and then, with almost no detectable cause. Mine has done it a couple of times (over 25 years!!). Never worked out why.
    • I don't post on here and have been lurking for some time now. Many of the topics have helped me out more times than i can count. I was racing yesterday (11/9) and blew a front right CV shaft. I have spares so I popped a new one in. A thread i read previously said to check the engine mounts if you blow a front CV. Upon inspection, the front right mount was completely separated from the upper plate. This discovery saved me time and money, because i would have blown another CV if i went back out. Just wanted to thank you guys and wish everyone luck with with their builds. (Now if we could only come up with a solution for my power steering belt flying off after hitting the rev limiter, lol)
    • Either way he still need those style of spacer to go into the manifold because the photo he currently has is not going to work
    • You can just get the injector bosses, which allows top feeds to fit. He can use the same injectors without issue, like these (another option): https://rocketindustries.com.au/af59-2210-rb25-fuel-injector-inserts     The Racework ones look a bit better: https://www.nzefi.com/product/raceworks-lower-injector-mounting-boss-kit-for-r33-rb25det-s14-s15-sr20det/   You could also just get a similar kit like the Radium one by Plazmaman: https://plazmaman.com/product/nissan-rb25det-r33-billet-fuel-rail/?srsltid=AfmBOoogfYq49X0fu2Wdbf8yOf6zt9egyPAif_gn3Qr3G8hzAphhTgOkO70
