Hi

Has anyone fitted a VL RB30 water pump to a R34 GTT (RB25DET NEO) without any dramas in terms of performance, reliability and cooling?

Reason I ask is that there is about a $160 price difference in the two and I have heard mix stories about them.

All I know is that one bolt hole does not line up, and eveyrone has installed it without that bolt in there.

Thanks

i personally wouldnt do it...

these things can vibrate alot with the belt on the pulley at high speeds...

but if you wana experiment it...let us know

I think I know what the go is....

From right to left

1) RB20DET engine, they can only be used on a RB20 series engines, the top hole is not slotted and is slightly offset so it doesnt seem to fit other RB's.

Part# 21010-70TY5

2) R34 RB25DET NEO engine, this is also one of those pumps that fits the RB25DET, again, fitment on other RB doesnt seem feasable as the hole is not slotted and is slightly offset towards the left. The casting design seems slightly different as well, it seems to look slightly shallower then the other models.

Part# 21010-AA527

3) Standard RB26DETT and R33 RB25DET, this one is able to fit on any RB series engines ranging from RB20DE, RB25DE, RB20DET, RB25DET, and RB26DETT of all series. This one has the hole slotted to fit multitudes of RB engines, this is ok to use on any RB engine.

Part# 21010-21U26

4) RB26DETT N1 specification engine, this one fits the same as the one above, it fits all RB engines of all series, but what makes this pump special is the anti-cavitational 6 blade impeller instead of the others that have a 8 blade non backing plate designs. This pump originates from the Skyline R34 N1 models, this is a ideal upgrade for those guys who like to wind up the RB since this limits the coolant caviation to a minimum.

Part# 21010-24U27

I think the previous person who changed mine used 3), the standard R33 one or a VL one - which both have an elongated or slotted hole

The guy who provided the above info said

For those of you that install the RB pumps with the slotted holes 3) and 4), you must be very careful applying the silicone sealant around the slotted hole. If not enough is applied it will start to leak around that area as the surface area for sealing is very small. Pay particular attention to that slotted area when installing!

This is because on some cars, the bolt that goes through that elongatedor slotted hole doesnt actually fit in. Hence, if you dont carefully put enough sealant there, or its not done right, it will leak. In my car, looks like it is leaking there.

good work!

but becareful with the sealant

im not a big fan of the sillicone paste...

id prefer having a brand new gasket every time i replace something like this...

because you gotta becareful no lose bits go into the actual device...it can clog up things

but nice post...gives people a good idea of the waterpumps in the RB series

Yeah, the rb30 waterpump is different to the RB25 & RB26.. I tried using the rb25 pump during my rb30 conversion and there is one bolt that doesn't line up, as suggested above. I would think it would be better to go with the proper option, but if you're desperate I guess you could try bogging it up with extra sealent, seems like the ghetto option to me though :P

I thought the RB30 was fine to use on RB25, even though one bolt dosen't line up and that they are the same inherent design?

I put rb30 vl t water pump on my rb25 no probs yes one bolt hole does not line up the small one on top right fill it with silicone and bit extra around gasket area no probs. generally when a water pump fails its not from the gasket surface its from the internal water pump seal wich comes in contact with the moving shaft and when the seal goes it will spew water out of the tell tail hole on the top or bottom of the pump. I paid $69 for a jap made rb30 pump with a 2yr warranty cant complain about the price.!!! If money is no problem buy the n1... but I prefer extra cash left in my pocket for beer and more performance orientated mods.... changing the pump is a bitch of a job because you have to pull so much crap off.... it can be done without removing timing belt just the tensioner and zip tie the belt in place so cam timing does not change if you are not confident removing cam belt and two save time. You will need a harmonic balancer puller to remove balancer otherwise you are going to damage it and loose skin off your knuckles.( dont just hit it with a hammer) puller cost $15 from autopro. Top cam cover allen key bolts fit in balancer no probs with a few washers as spacers. Have fun allow the best part of a day for this job. could be done quicker but I prefer to take my time and make sure all gasket surfaces are super clean. ...have fun concluding rb30 pump on rb25 no probs!!! save your dollars!! Direct from the ghetto!! Ha Ha!! not really ghetto. more ghetto is bodgey work done .... putting a second hand pump on is super ghetto!!http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/style_images/1/folder_post_icons/icon6.gif

haha cheers, yeah think I'll be getting a mate to do that and the 100k service, as he's done 5 or 6 of em before and I could see myself doing something wrong there lol.

Bit of a price difference, like when i got a Y60 Patrol clutch master rather than a R32 one (same part) saved a bit of money and transport time there!

Looked at my old water pump that I replaced 35000kms ago when I bought the car - its the R34 GTT specific one. Hmmmz looks like I have to go with the same one to be on the safe side! damn why does Nissan want $240 for it! VL ones are $80!

I got one for my R33 RB25DET (ie, number 3 in your picture) for $126.50 from a Nissan dealership... I would think the R34 one would be similar pricing given that it's pretty much the same thing... I'm pretty sure I got a decent discount though :merli:

I also looked into the RB30 option, but decided against it.

Just for the reasons mentioned here and in other threads about the bolt not lining up.... and I wasn't doing it myself so I (and probably the workshop too) would prefer to just have the right model rather than mucking about. And also the price I paid wasn't *that* much more so it seemed like the safer option for me :pirate:
