Just reading the May issue of MOTOR mag......

"In fact,late 2007.I toured the GTR production facility and I asked

a Nissan engineer point-blank about the longevity of the engine.

There was,he said,no reason to suspect that the GTR bores would last anything less than 300,000 km,

and possibly even more" (Page103 Motor Mag)

This was in response to as he says....

""Forum after forum of worried punters,grieving because they might

have to buy a new engine instead of simply boring......................."

"This ignores a couple of salient facts:"

" a) Most of the nongs who populate such forums rather than the real

world are about as likely to buy a brand new GTR as I am of voting

for Family first.."

" b) since the coating is so tough in the first place,it'll last longer than any

conventional liners anyway."

Well I know where he is coming from, as I read quite a few times on forums etc that because of the plasma lining the GTR would need to have a service at 100,000km that would involve the engine coming out to recoat the cylinders.

Based on the facts in the Motor article, this appears grossly mis-informed.

whenever this pops up i'm always saying it's just internet rumour b.s., like so many other things floating around this car.

the logitics of a complete re-lining of all cylinders is so far beyond what practically all dealerships around the world could ever dream of being able to handle, should tell people enough that there is no way at 100K km you'd be able to drive your car in for it's scheduled "major" service.

that and the fact that despite all these cars being officially delivered, there has not one dealership anywhere in any market saying you'll need to come back in at 100K km's mate, we'll just need the car for a few months

all complete fantasy.

So does this need to happen when the car reaches 40,000 Km? If so, do you know how much it is?

No you only have to get it done when you fill up with Petrol, I have had mine done 3 times now, it is booked it for when I fill up this afternoon. ;)

The 40k rumour is a complete respray of the car......it goes so fast the paint peels off so to keep it in good condition you need to have it resprayed.

well I've only been saying this since DECEMBER 2007!! and posted it on the forum at that time too. but no one listens to the poor old beer baron. I asked nissan japan myself way back then and the engineer that I asked nearly fell off his chair laughing at me when I asked if the engine needed a rebuild every 100K kms. he then explained than even the RB26 will live for well over 200,000kms without rebuild (in standard form) and that the VR38 is more advanced and that the plasma coating extends engine life, not reduces it.

lol, no worries mate. I wasn't pissed. just I have a sore voice from saying the same thing for 1 and a half years now! but yet still no one believes me. :D maybe they will believe morely....

    • Oh wow, it's easy to forget how cheap these can be. Probably the cheapest way to travel. Though people in cars here tend to be morons and I would not feel very safe. Were scooters ever big in Australia? It used to be the thing growing up in Europe ~20 years ago. 50/70/125ccm Peugeot or Yamaha and some others. Utterly obnoxious Polini race exhausts. Kick stands that slant as much as possible. So loud. So much noise for really not moving very fast at all. But it felt cool at the time. Not sure where I'm going with this, but there is an aftermarket for mopeds! Though I'd have pictured you more for a Goldwing kind of guy after growing out of the Harley.

    • As the MX5 isn't apparently "manly" enough, and I need something for runs to the local shops, and also take to my part time job at the salon, basically I can keep the MX5 away from car parks and stuff......like "flying lockers", I was wondering what I could buy to fix this issue LOL, I pick up a new Yamaha 125 Delight this arvo from Trooper Lu, basically a R1 that you can fit a slab of beer on between your feet, also, it was $29400 cheaper than a R1, so actually it's 2 x better than a R1    
    • Nah. H2S. H2S is "rotten egg gas", which is what is associated with no cat. SO2 is equally nasty, and if you've ever smelt it you'll know all about it. More of a choking, acid in the back of the throat sort of thing. But you can only smell it in a narrow range up to about 1ppm. Above that, it irritates your mucous membranes, but you don't smell it.
    • Kicked the 34 in the guts, she won’t be seeing the road till I get the 31 mobile again.  wont be long and she’s a bit of a garage princess anyway haha
