Subject : HOONS SMOKE IT UP WHILE LABOR SLEEPS

Author : Ted Baillieu MLA

Victoria's hoon drivers are getting off lightly because of Labor's refusal to toughen anti-hoon legislation, Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said today.

Mr Baillieu said Police Minister Bob Cameron* was too focused on back-slapping stunts, not on protecting Victorian families from reckless drivers.

"It was the Coalition parties, the Liberal Party in particular, that advanced the prospect of hoon legislation in this state two years ago, and the Government ridiculed us at the time.

"But having adopted our policy, Labor has refused to make these laws tough enough to stop hoon drivers from endangering other road users.

"Since 2006, we've seen the number of offences which have led to hoon legislation being used increase from 120 a month to nearly 280 a month, showing these laws have not been adequate to deter offenders.

"Hoon driving is Victoria's fastest-growing popular sport, and having your car confiscated for 48 hours is now seen as a badge of honour.

"Taking a car off somebody on Friday night and giving it back to them on Monday morning is not enough and John Brumby and his Ministers should go much further.

"For example, Western Australia and New South Wales have flagged laws to crush cars, Western Australia and South Australia can clamp cars for a first offence and SA police can apply to extend clamping to 90 days.

"After the Kororoit by-election on Saturday night I saw hoons in Deer Park fishtailing their cars down Canterbury Street, putting at risk mums and dads out for a Saturday night with their families.

"This sort of behaviour is a disgrace and the Government must act now to toughen up on hoon legislation," Mr Baillieu said.

*Mr Cameron's Bendigo electorate is Victoria's worst hoon hotspot, with statistics released by police revealing that 162 cars have been seized from Bendigo drivers under anti-hoon laws.

Thought the community should know about this for the upcoming election.

Spread the word

------------------------------------------------------------------

I have read the Press Release carefully . It merely discusses a range of stronger enforcement options to better deal with car hoons, "For example, Western Australia and New South Wales have flagged laws to crush cars, Western Australia and South Australia can clamp cars for a first offence and SA police can apply to extend clamping to 90 days.".

It simply states some facts about the options being looked at in other States.

Perhaps Taso84 may wish to tell us how he interprets the Press Release as a commitment by that political party or leader to introduce car crushing laws?

Yea agree with you, but I reckon its more about reading between the lines than what is literally said. But hey, if you want to take the press release at face value as a statement of facts (be it on a political website) then you are entitled to do so.

Other states 'flagged' laws for car crushing years ago - has it happened yet?

No. Thats the facts

Maybe read my post again, I'm not disputing this. End of the day I don't know if ur a Lib supporter or what, but picking on the technicalities doesn't mean jack. End of the day Ballieu is inferring that we should be crushing cars.

*yawn* these threads are rather boring, first few were entertaining at least

Any btw, this thread was not intended for ur entertainment purposes, it was for informative purposes for the rest of the community that might be concerned and/or affected.

It would be interesting to see if that would contravene the property rights provisions of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.

If it does they will either change it or find a loop hole.

It wont happen over night but it will happen.

hmmm... if only somebody had the balls to challenge the 3rd strike confiscation hoon law on this basis, i would definately be donating to the fund.

Of course we don't hear Ballieu talking up the rhetoric of the real hoons from his home neighbor hood. Those Toorak Mums in their Toorak Tractors talking on their mobiles whilst failing to give way and tailgating. They are the real hoons Maybe Ballieu should look at his own neighborhood to crack down on rather than some fishtailing muzza in Taylor's Lakes.

    • Hey all, I did a voltage test with the car (video attached) not running for 3 days. And here is some interesting stuff: - Battery voltage is 12v (I had the key in the ON position) - Drops to 9.76v while cranking then quickly goes up to 14.5v - You will notice there was a sorta slow start but not as slow as it usually is. - Idle surprisingly was better at just over 1,000rpm instead of 1,100 rpm. - I turned on the A/C, radio and headlights in the video and the voltage remains the same - I haven't cleaned the grounding wires on the chassis yet, that's next. - Battery drops to 12.6v when I turn off the car and wait a bit Seems like I might have a parasitic draw? I do have an immobiliser system which does drain the battery more of course but was wondering if there is anything else I should be looking at fixing? Does the ground wires on the chassis have anything to do with the low 12v?        SAU.avi
    • My lord that is some low oil pressure as minimum in the manual! I guess the big part will be seeing how it changes as the engine gets more spirited use.
    • Turbotapin   so I am about to be mounting mine up been waiting for the body to get finish at paint. I had a question. I was told our Speedo sensor it originally in the transmission but the cd009 is in the diff on the z. How did you get around this?
    • I definitely do recommend having a fab/grinding/dirty shed or area to keep all that grinding dust out of your main shed.  But you're right, it doesn't matter how much room you have you still end up filling it! I might even do a short video which will make it easier to fully take in the horrors of what I've created...
