Yeh you're right the GTST's and GTR's don't sound exactly the same. My first Skyline was a GTST of the same year and I must admit it did have quite a note before I got busted for it haha! Lets just say it took a lot of work to bring it under 90db again lol!

Yeh I might even post up a vid of it hey? I got the old sound....just need to take some "footage" of the drone.

There's no reputable tuners in my area ;-)

good idea..

get someone to drive it past whilst you record it & place the camera 2M away from the car whilst your car is stationary and rev it a bit.

yeah well the supra i mentioned before, i got tested between 130 - 140db..and i had never gotten busted for the 3 years ive owned it.

looking forward to seeing your video

OK, I've posted up a video just for this thread! Listen to that rumble haha! Well, the rumble it had before the twin to single conversion.

Now I just need to get some footage of the drone although you could just listen to one of those ricer boys with their milo tins ;-) Sounds just like it lol.

that sounds awsome

yep, whenever your ready with the video

It did have a nice ring to it hey? Now you know why I posted....because with my turbo conversion that all disappeared.

I guess it's a matter of opinion too:

...some people care only about getting from point A to point B. Then you got those who only care about the look and sound of their car....you know, the all-show-no-go type. Then you go the opposite of that where people build brutal machines that set lap records and don't really mind what they look or sound like......and then finally, I guess you have my catagory - a slightly built up GTR for track and road use....nice looks and wanting nice sound too, so the whole thing really.

But yeh I'll try to capture some "drone" ;-)

well if it were me i wouldnt care too much about the sound

depends on how your car really sounds like......

it probably doesnt sound bad at all but your just not used to it?

yeah highly modified cars can sound very different

this 7 sec supra for e.g... ive noticed anything over the 1000hp range they start to sound like a Tractor rather than a car...

listen to this supras idle..

If it was just a different note then that would be OK....but in my case it not only has a different note but it has quite some drone to it. Oh yeh, that's true - the more HP the less they sound like what they did with just factory type power. Yep, that supra idles nothing like the normal ones hehe....but then that ain't quite a supra anymore! It's more like 10 supras in 1 lol!

I went for a little spin around the block before and got a dose of drone on camera....just waiting for the video to become active. Will post the link when it's good to go. You'll have to watch it straight after you watch my other one - quite a difference!

gee

that sounds awsome!

if there is no loss of power i dont think theres anything wrong, it may be what you were saying in the first place, the design of the turbine & size.

ive heard T88 & T78 supras and GT-Rs and they do sound different to stock.

id love that sound....that doesnt sound like no shitty non turbo 4cyl dude....

im guessing it sounds a bit better in real life?

the "droning" sound...are you describing it as the low pitch gurgle?

if so, thats just the nature of the turbocharger.

if you really care about sound, something you might wana look at in the long run would be aftermarket cams...

they play a big role in a cars exhaust note.

LOL I knew you'd say that. Well, the first part of the video is just the exhaust in idle in the garage and like I said earlier, it still sounds half decent under around 1500rpm or so. I used my own shitty camera for this so it didn't pick up the droning part of the movie as well as I hoped. It's hard to explain really and it would be so much easier if you one could just go for a spin ;-)

By the way, when there's no load on the engine and you free-spin it up to like 3000 or so like I did in the video it won't drone....it's only when I'm driving and when the engine is at work that it drones its head off :) (Did you watch the driving bit in the movie?)

the "droning" sound...are you describing it as the low pitch gurgle?

Nope it's that "gurgle" sound that I love - it's unique to the RB series engines and from it you can tell there's a Skyline nearby :(

In my first video where I'm driving to the pits you can hear the sound there and it would continue like this all the way through the rev range...it was music!

In the clip you'll notice that it no longer does the "gurgling" during normal cruising like it used to with the twins.

But yeh, to anyone else reading this - don't get me wrong - it's not a bad thing.....I'm just hoping that someone who's noticed exactly the same thing may have done something with their exhaust to minimize the drone and bring out some of that old sound when driving etc. Please check out my two comparsion videos put up just for this thread/question:

Sound after twins were replaced with GT35r (please watch this one all the way through)

yeah i listen to it all the way

the video sound is very muffled

but i personally dont think theres anything wrong

i take it that your just getting used to it, aftermarket turbos do make a change to the note

yeh would be nice if you could set up a video outside.....whilst driving...

set it on a Kerb outside and drive past it on the opposite side of the road.

awsome!

    • Nope, but they are definitely one of the default choices. Well established.

    • Haha actually I did join back then under a different email address,  I couldn't re-activate my account so made a new one! I didn't post much anyway so not missing out on much. Amazing to see how the value of the cars and parts has changed over the years, also ACT section appears to be dead now.
    • Thanks... It's in pretty good condition overall, probably due to not being drifted/tuned however being a daily driver has taken its toll. Had 100k on the clock when I got it, up to 180k now. Unfortunately it's not 100% dent free, it's got a small dent on FLH side and broken indicator from where I hit a small kangaroo at high speed. If you look at closely at pic #5 you might spot the dodgy trailer light repair my old man and I rigged up as temporary repair! - It's still there due to a combo of needing the car as daily driver and then too lazy/busy to fix properly. I've a couple of other minor accidents accidents as well but nothing major. One required a new front bar and unfortunately the smash repairer ordered the normal gtst one and not the aero bar. Needed the car back asap so just went with it, regretted ever since.
    • I can't believe that anyone is foolish enough to believe that the base maps are for any other purpose than to drive the car up onto the trailer/truck or gently creep it to the dyno. No matter how good they are, they can never be any better than the factory maps**, and only the foolish trust those on a significantly modified setup. **Yeah, yeah. I know there's also the difference between factory maps being fixed to certain injector sizes and MAP/AFM/VE relationships, and the likely aftermarket ECU base maps being better able to handle the sorts of changes that would render a stock ECU dangerous, like different sized injectors. But let's just ignore that for the moment, because the principle is still the same.
