grabbing a kit from a mate shortly, cheers,

took off the dump/front pipe and there isnt any oil leakage to the front/rear of the turbo

hey sorry wasn't trying to be rude or anything, sorry if i sounded like a dick.

Just borrow a compression kit if you can, that 50 bucks can be better spent on your family. I'm sure someone here can help you out.

would of thought your used to that now :(

my bet still on a boost leak,

engine and working turbo are unlikely to cause the symptons your describing.

however if a cooler pipe expands under pressure exposing a leak,

then it all escapes thru the leak, cause its the path of least resistance. ie not compressed.

the air flow metre is reading normal because it before the turbo, so it thinks your on boost and therfor tells the injectors to start pumping lots of fuel.

however the engine isnt injesting this air due to the leak so it suddenly goes way rich. like 6 to 1 afr's.

hence all the smoke, minimal boost , and running like crap when on boost.

presurise the inlet sytem before you pull any more apart.

driving home last night going up the expressway hill I had heaps of bad surging (1psi) couldnt boost anywhere near asper normal, and black smoke billlllowing out the exhaust (on boost only)

felt bad, climbed up off boost in left lane.

today driving, same thing. boost is bad (wound down the ebc to .3bar) as soon as it hits 1psi - 3psi it is surging, airflow is all turbulent, and the turbo sounds like its working its head off (not squealing, just 110% load), lots of black gooky smoke and just generally bad bad.

also

when you boot it the turbo is working flat out to make any boost,

the ebc isnt reading boost from the manifold so it tells the turbo to work even harder.

all in all compounding the issue

there is oil around the block, at #1 piston area, next to the exhaust manifold, and looks to be sprayed onto the front of the turbo and the surrounding areas

borrowing a comp.tester soonish...

seeing the dump is off and the turbo is totally exposed, I'll drop off all the ic-joins and see each area for a split.

stick a plastic bag over your afm and then pump compressed air into your vac line up near your inlet manifold.

this will pressurise everything and show you where the leak is.

often the leak wont show itself until its under pressure

Surge... Sounds much like a boost leak.

My turbo to IC joiner developed a pin prick hole that would open right up under boost and created bad surge and the car felt dead. Idled and drove with under 4psi or so perfectly fine.

definately 100% sure there is no boost leak.

did a compression test just now

140, 140, 142, 138, 140, 140psi across the 6 cylinders, very happy with that (105,000km 12yrs old)

the dump pipe is coked in oily carbon dust. thick. shaft play left/right up/down but not forward/backwards. going to take the last 7 bolts off shortly (4 manifold, 2 oil, 1 water line) and have the turbo in my hands.

exhaust housing was pretty dusty, dark thick oil smelling dust, goes right thru the dump (end of dump is really thick, recent too, ie it isnt old residue, it's fresh) and most likely thru to the muffler. the jjr dump is in excellent condition, going to clean all this gunk out of it tho, and replace the 02 sensor.

so, 1st thoughts were correct, oil seals / bearing inside the turbo is failing. caught it in time before she blew.

will have the turbo off later today, have a good look and see whats gone.

yeah its good to be able to diagnose it and get into it (wasnt that long to take apart really)

need a socket no.24 tho lol for the water line. damn.

oil line is cracked, will drain the sump shortly, then scrounge for a 24' socket, dont trust my spanner to Not strip the thread :(

Just a thought, you're running a PFC are you not? You didn't happen to look at your airflow meter settings did you? I looked at mine once to see what options there was and unintentionally changed it to a diff afm. It's easy to do, when the list is up on the screen you just scroll down. No confirmation or anything.

my turbos on its way out too

making wierd noises at full power, so since last service (3 months) been running on lowest boost and just driving it like a grandma lol

any1 give me any tips as to what i should do?

im thinking 2 just swap it over with a 2nd hand r33 series 2 turbo?

dun wana spend do much, cos prob sell her end of the yr...

Vange, long time no see buddy! Yeah you could just do a nice swap over with another S2 turbo or get in contact with Madaz and see if he wants to sell you my old hi-flow turbo. Either way, when you get a turbo let me know and I'll swap it over with ya!

Check for blow by Brendo.

hey pal!

got the turbo off in my hands now

pretty good nick, sure its inside tho..... one of the shaft seals.

getting prices later on

and yeah going to buy a oil catch can setup as well

not sure, there are signs on the turbo of excessive bearing noise and play, front wheel is just starting to hit the comp.housing inlet bore

going to get a price for a basic rebuild kit for this one

and a price to highflow stock housings I have with gt2871 & stock r33 core plus bb pack and wheels - give em 1 turbo + parts for another and get two new ones back =)

also will go over the piping eveywhere for the inlet charge and see whats going on, probably get a metal one made up (welded) while we are at it instead of using 5 silicone joiners

go for one hard return pipe at the back of the fmic going up towards the throttle body and that will get rid of 3 joiners

went and had a good chat to bill at ATS, marion rd.

took him the turbo he went right over it

told him the symptoms, after 4yrs the turbo could do with a freshen up but at this stage its all intact just 'used'

got a price for rebuild my highflow, and a price to take it all and give me a GT3071

so... arranged to upgrade to a GT30r 3071r with 6bolt nissan-RB outlet, new lines

but then there is this

post-18854-1240449503_thumb.jpg

hmmmm - thats the current line, split right thru. that'd cause some oil supply issues ?

oil has definately gone thru the turbo and been burnt to a light powder, thick deposits thru the dump, black oily smoke, surging etc

it isnt the engine as such, piston rings are fine and spark plugs are all whitish from fuel no sign of oil

anyway, gave ATS my bag of turbos and new td05h/16g + ball bearing, he's discounting it all for a new GT30 :(

so thats that

now to make up a better hardpipe set to/from the intercooler - but yeah no splits there as is.

    • Interesting, I haven't read about the issue with oil getting into the speedo in the cluster before. I'll have to take more notice with mine. The speedo on my R32's when I've run factory diff and tyre size have never been accurate as far as I can remember. The non Type-M GTS-t did come with 15" 5 stud wheels and smaller brakes, but that's less than 5% of them.
    • Good to hear the condenser you picked up off my brother worked all good. Do you think there could be an issue with your AC compressor itself or the clutch on it then? I don't know a lot about them so I can't really help but keen to hear what it ends up being. Keep the build thread going man, it's nice to look back on over time.
    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.
    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
