The workshop redsuns88 was talking about was Chapman and Chapman (Simon Chapman), in Deshon St where ABS is now. I am not sure if has the same owners. They prepared John Teulan's GTP racer plus cars for Targa.

I have also used Gavin Wood. He is my favorite and charges about $70 for an inspection. He has the diagnostic equiptment to interrogate the ECU. If you don't have this done, its hard to find faults. He has been good to me.

A couple of points to note ( and following on from 45ULT):

DON'T TRUST THE ODOMETER READING These are easily "haircut". If I could have a dollar for every import with 70k on the clock! Jap speedo's have 185km limits so any car with a Nismo, Mines or whatever instrument cluster is also low.

BOOSTED ENGINES OVERHEAT A big radiator is an essential on modified cars. Japan is a cold place so its ok there but when you see pictures of big turbos and fancy KW claims without a nice fat radiator, you expect to replace the head gasket or block.Most GTR's are in need of major work. They are complex mechanically so any repair job has a lot of dissasembly and re-assembly of other parts to get at the faulty part. This is expensive.

Just about every seller claims the engine was rebuilt in Japan. This is an urban myth like "cheques in the mail".

mate you're way off the mark there.. also if it was me buying a 32 gtr i'd be looking for one with a fresh engine with receipts of work done. gives u a good base for modifying

it is even possible to get a 32 gtr that is in good condition?

i'm not looking at a high power gtr. i'm looking at one just to drive around and have fun when i want to.

it will just be a weekend drive.

Sure it is.. but you have to know that on a high power car, with 20 years or so on the clock, things are starting to wear out. The odds are pretty high unless things have already been attended to.

They can be great cars, but you need a fairly heavy buffer in reserve for major problems.. And by that I mean about $10k, which may cover an engine rebuild. If that seems like a scary proposition, then maybe it's not the sort of car for you.

mine runs pretty well with the stock radiator, been cleaned and everything though, actually did a a fair few dyno runs with the dyno fan off to test temps.

perhaps it will make more sense to get a 33 gtr ?

don't loose heart, there are good examples of the R32 out there. but they are not cheap, owners who maintain their vehicles [ie, those that fix/repair problems as they occur] are generally not going to sell out cheaply [apart from the odd desperado] because of monies spent keeping the car in good shape. also, over the last couple of years, good R32 GTR have held there value better than the other GTR models.

point is if you find a good/well maintained one, and only drive it, as opposed to 'thrash' it on weekends you should not hear the 'time bomb' ticking!!.

there are plenty of people who own GTR's that can't afford to maintain them, that's why there are some out there on the market that fall into the 'time bomb' category.

I'll add my 2c here since I was in a similar position to you not long ago.

When I first started looking at GTRs I wanted to buy a car that had a recent engine rebuild or at the very least turbos replaced with all receipts for work to make sure it was done correctly. The problem I found with this is that its difficult to find somebody who has rebuilt an engine without cutting corners. Its an expensive thing to do properly and things do get neglected. The other trouble with a modified motor is that it puts more stress on the rest of the standard components and you get other things failing. Clutches etc.

So after looking at a lot of modified GTRs that didn't really cut it I decided to start looking for something that was as close to stock as possible. My reasoning for this was that stock GTRs are a great piece of kit and are fairly reliable in stock form. Most of the reliability issues come from poor maintenance or modifcations. If you get a decent stock GTR and treat it right it will last a decent amount of time.

Make sure you service it properly and keep an eye on your oil and you should be right.

If your only looking for something as a daily driver then a stock GTR is fine. I use mine as a daily and its a great car to drive everyday. Buy it, maintain it and love it you won't regret it.

PS. That black v spec looks worth a look.

this model is one of a limited number; [1200+ I think, GTR buffs may correct my numbers here] and I know that good/lowkm examples of this model were bringing/asking over $30k and up $37k [through importers] last year when I was looking to buy. so I'd be wary at <$20k.

Most people just assume that because its a 94 model is a V spec so thats probably the case here. As you said there was only about 1200 v spec IIs made but there always seems to be a plentiful supply :P

Don't worry about buying a V spec or anything for its resale value because the only 32 GTRs that are going to go up in value are the genuine low km fully log booked V Specs, N1s and Aussie delivered ones.

Just try and find the best condition one you can afford and buy it.

That black GTR looks tired mate you can tell by the interior, its just got that freshly imported look to it and ive been a bush basher all my life in Japan. There is definately better out there. With some good mods and rebuilt motors.

for starters not all 94 gtrs are vspec cause my gtr was built 09/94 the best thing about 94 gtrs are they have had the soft older model gremlins eliminated like the push type clutch the 94s have an r33 pull type clutch set up and r33 cranks with a bigger collar for the oil pump.i dont know why every one has bagged old r32 gtrs as they are the original godzilla and are an amazing car to own and drive.so just do a normal car check high ks clutch and brake pedal wear handbrake wear will tell you alot about ks versus truth check oil leaks and usual underbody checks alot of cars look mint on the serface put them on a hoist and things become alot clearer.dont believe the hype get a clean low k 94 if poss and enjoy modifying it your self so then you will know what youve got 4 your self

sure the R32 GTR is a great car, no argument there; but to advise Merceid to just do a "normal car check", is not good advice. to be sure he is not buying a lemon/money pit, he needs to spend the money to get a thorough GTR specific inspection.

I was actually - dad used them for a few cars he bought and checks and report were very thorough (granted that was years and years ago)

not everyone knows wot they are looking at when they look at a car do they...suppose thats not fair of me too say that to a r32 gtr newbie.

im a mechanic and have had three r32gtrs and have seen alot of r32s. the most obvious things can tell you alot about any cars history, age, condition, ect.

if i could tell you anyone to take a gtr to in qld.if they have got the time to inspect it that is, would be mark at godzilla motorsport. who else would you wanna take your gtr too than the guys with the fastest and most powerful gtrs in aus...
