Speed camera insanity !!!

I know the safty camera's in NSW and that they measure average speed I just dont think they are automatic but I could be wrong. My source for info works in the technical section in the police force and last time I checked they could not do things described but it has been a number of months since we spoke about it so I will call him again and ask again. I am not saying it 100% but I am pretty sure.

As far as I know they would have to site and access each photo for it to be legal.

It would be very labour intensive to use it on all cars. They may still do it.

Something needs to be done to stop revenue raising in the name of safety.

To Quote the article "Speed was a factor" .. Speed is a factor in ANY ACCIDENT according to a police report, because for an accident to happen two cars have to be travelling at a speed inappropriate for the accident to occur in the first place.

SPEEDING being a factor in an accident is not being above the speed limit, but an inappropriate speed for a given situation.

i used to drive holday in victoria a few times a year ever since the 3 kays shit i got booked twice in the same day and i was on the plane by the afternoon and never return there. why would u go to a place where your supposedly there to enjoy yourself , and you're being probe and prode in an effort to raise revenues which in the ends has other ramification. i think victoria suck. the govt. not the ppls, and would never go there for holiday period!!! going to vanuatu or the pacific islands are cheaper.

What happens if you have to over take slower cars, you have to drive faster to get past them safely, or are you better to stay on the OPPERSITE side of the road for longer and pass at the speed limit to make sure that you dont get fined down the road.

Sounds a bit suspect to me, to many loop holes. Sure the cameras can calculate that you were MAY have been speeding but on long trips up a freeway a 3km buffer is **** all. Too many varyables in the equasion.

Thats what bracks and his goons do all day, think up more ways to screw money from motorists! And the fact that they try use bs stats to make it look like it will do anything else but rainse more $$ for them is a farkin joke!

I am pretty sure that more traffic accidents happen in car parks were there is no speed involved.

I personally beleive that careless drivers cause more accidents then speed does. How many times have you had to avoid a driver that was pulling into you lane and didnt check their blind spots or mirrors? How about the drivers that are going 20km's under the speed limit on the freeway! That is more dangerous than someone that is speeding because that means that you have to take avasive action avoid becoming a stat for the police to parade in the press!

ok, I left mount isa, because i was booked doing 157 in a 60 zone, this was on a sunday arvo, at a roadworks taht had been completed, except the signs where not removed. the copper had hidden his car in the bush and was couched behind the roadworks finish sign. This highway goes STRAIGHT for 40 kms and there is nothing out there except kangaroos and cops, also some emus, anyway i got a $350 and lost my license for one day. but the cops up ther know me so i left.

But now they are spending millions on putting cameras from the QLD-NT border through to cloncurry, because they are booking heaps of people speeding, and there has only been 4 deaths in the last 6 years, and that was in the one car crash, everyone else died because the world war 2 roads are washed out on the side and cause roll overs. my brother rolled a car the old day, and wrote it off, he was doing 80km/hr and this was on a straight road, he hit a pot hole and the tyre blew, the 03' hilux dad bought on monday was ****ed after 800kms

Yes, the technology -is- available, a computer can use motion detection, take a photo, use OCR to read the plate and determine average speed based on time taken between two points.

I was wondering about that. To determine this however, they would have to take a reading of *every* vehicle travelling, to later determine at the next point whether the same vehicle is exceeding an average speed over that section. Seems rather very prone to error and lots of logging to me. I'm sure its possible, but not easy.

And what happens if you just stop along a bit, wait for 20mins, then proceed to floor it to 200km/hr till the next section, then slow down just before the next measure point?

When you think about it to, that basically means you're not really allowed to overtake on the Highway either if its only 3km/hr leeway. May as well make the Hume a single lane road..

Anyway, all i can say is, I'm glad the Hume goes mostly through the country, and lots of people in the country own guns. I'm sure it will provide some nice entertainment for the country lads out there taking target practice at fixed speed cameras

Um, that already pretty much happens here in VIC The cop just has to say he "estimates" your speed as being over and will issue you a ticket. You either fight it in court, with the time and money involved. Or grin and bend over...pay the fine and hope you're not so unlucky the next time.

Talking on forums doesnt help the situation, writing letters to politicians is a good start.

I think Wheels Magazine did a 'revenue raising is bullshit' issue a few years ago, that included a form letter for all its readers to send to their local MP.

It had absolutely no effect whatsoever.

The government is scamming us.
