Hey all,

my friend just drove my R34 Skyline today, and it got him hooked lol, now he wants to buy one. Only thing is, he doesnt have a full-time job, and doesnt really have any money, so he wants to try to convince his dad to give him a loan for the car. He wouldnt mind an R34, but would really like R32. We were looking at a few of them on different websites, and this is the best value one we found:

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/privat...id=11DFF7A357CA.

What we are trying to do now is come up with a convincing arguement to present to his dad. We need reasons why it would be a good car to own, other than it being a Skyline lol, because his dad wont like that it is a turbo. So we need to convince him that it is good as a standard car, not just as a fast car. Knowing about Skylines, i know a GTS-T isnt exactly a GTR, but his dad would hear turbo and just think "ridiculously fast".

So anyone got any ideas, we would really like some specifications and stuff about them lol, and why this car would be a good car to buy. I really only know about 34's, so its hard to find a good arguement...

Cheers for any help!

if you cant afford to buy one you cant really afford to run one..

to keep them running happily you need to service them often

they arent great on fuel when compared to some other cars

its gonna be hard, skylines are cars you buy because you are an enthusiast.

you like the looks

you like the power

you like the handling

etc etc

some points id try use would be the reliability

20 year old skylines still go strong unless they have been thrashed or heavily modified

but yeh, good luck

If he has no money and hasnt got a fulltime job then it is going to be hard to convince his dad for a little 4 cyl car. An r32 is one of the cheaper Skylines on the market because they are older, being an older car most things like suspension/ driving components are worn out and in little time will need to be replaced. Fuel would be a consideration in this current market too, i doubt that your friend would like sacrificing most if not all of his money into fuel and regular servicing that an old skyline may need.

Tell him to wait a few years, get some money behind him so when he finally gets the car he can fully appreciate how good it is.

My friend didnt listen to me, and he doesnt have to worry about his Dad covering the loan, because he used a bank and they do not like when you cant pay back their money.

Greg89's car is very nice. Its a GTS4. So it has AWD = which is very safe for young inexperienced drivers in wet etc.

Its a nissan which means its reliable. If you don't mod it, the car will run well for ever. The R32 is light, that one has a 2L turbo engine. So it would fuel economic on freeway. Its only a 2L turbo which means it would put out like 150rwhp. Which is around the same as a 2000 Commodore. But would handle better.

Its a unique car and shows you are not just another knuckle head bogan who wants an auto V8.

That particular car will have a full vertex copy kit and GTR bonnet/grille on it in about a week or two. So it will look killer.

Will only cost just under 10K then.

It has new exhaust and coil overs. Which means you won't have shagged 20 year old suspension = dangerous.

It has a new clutch, which means it won't need to be replaced anytime soon. So that will save the kid/dad money.

Tyres have 70% tread = also good. New coil packs, which are usually expensive to replace.

To me thats like a 1999 wrx. AWD, turbo and reliable. Not a GTR or crazy off chops R34 GTT. Safe enough. Unless you drive like and idiot.

Def get it.

My 2 cents

Lawl, That is my car.

I've had quite a few messages about it recently, but it won't be up for inspection till it's kitted and I service it. So probably next weekend.

If you don't have enough money to maintain the car I wouldn't buy it, not that its expensive to run, it's just never really a good idea.

Yeah that is a DriftWA sticker, hasn't been yet, looking at Mays session if i still have it.

Ok yeh, all good points. First off he does have a part-time job, so he can afford to keep it running, he just doesnt have a full-time job so cant afford to buy it straight out. He is an enthusiast with R32's and S14/15 Silvia's, he isnt really so much into other models. If he saved up his money then he could buy it himself, the thing is by then this car will be gone, so he will probably need to find a different car and it will probably cost more.

Secondly, I used to drive a 1999 Holden Vectra, which is a 2.2L 4 Cylinder and it has a 60L petrol tank. I got about 350kms to a full tank out of that, and that was driving it pretty defensively, no aggressive acceleration or anything. With my R34 Skyline i get about 470kms out of its 65L tank, so i actually found that the Skyline is more fuel efficient than my 4 cylinder...

He isnt exactly an inexperienced driver, even though he hasnt had his licence long. He has been driving since he was about 7 and has done a few performance and defensive driving courses. Obviously he doesnt claim to be the best driver in the world, im just saying he knows his way around a car, he isnt just another one of those 17 year old kids that simply wants a Skyline because they have a reputation of being fast.

As the last post said, the 32 has new coil covers and clutch, so it isnt sitting on a lot of expensive suspension repairs, etc. He would also get a mechanic to check the car over for him and tell him about anything that needs to be repaired, he wont go near it if it needs anything done to it straight away

Haha good to see its owned by someone on the forums, always a good sign lol.

As i said in my previous post, he can afford to maintain it, he just cant afford it straight out

Man check out the forsale thread i have up for it it's a bit more informative than the carsales one, mainly because theres alot of scrubs on carsales.

I get ~460L/100kms, and are you sure thats right about your Vectra?! that sounds messed up:P

I'll more than likely be doing a compression test on it in the next couple weeks, mainly for my own benefit but i'll share the results np.

Ok yeh lol, ill check that out.

Definitely sure about the Vectra, i was as surprised as you are lol. They are good cars to drive, quite powerful for a 4 cylinder, but shocking on fuel lol. And the electrics in them are the worst thing ever created, they have so many problems its not funny. Spends more time off the road than a track car lol

460L/100kms :/ Yikes.... how bigs ur tank.. lol.

Hahahaha just read that right lol, pretty sure he meant 460kms per tank lol... Unless his tank is HUGE, and he uses a a ridiculous amount of fuel per 100kms lol.

"....Only thing is, he doesnt have a full-time job, and doesnt really have any money, ..."

No no no no. He will get one and have all the good intentions in the world to look after it. BUT when it goes wrong because he doesn't maintain it properly or does some half assed mod to it and gets defected for either or both he will come on this forum and ask about defects and I'll feel compelled to say. "You deserved it, your not worthy"

Glad I could help

Haha little bit harsh, we are newly graduated students in a poor economic climate, its not like he is some dole bludger that cant be bummed finding a job, its just that it is almost impossible to get a job right now. He is joining the navy as a mechanic soon anyway. Just because we are young doesnt mean we are stupid. He isnt interested in modding it at this stage, and he knows how to maintain a car. We have grown up around cars, we do know about them

yeah maybe but I get tired of those defect threads. Glad to see he has some sense...but with the money the ADF pays a 'Line might not be the right ride. Having said that if he's deployed he wont be driving to far. As for being interested in modding...mmm the bug will bite. I started with a cam belt service and the last thing I bought was a carbon fibre tail shaft lol. If I were to tell you what I've spent on my R and what it is worth resale you'd weep. Most cars are a bad investment, he should buy a house.

Most is an understatement:P

ADF doesn't pay too bad if you get deployed, I know a mate with a bunch of cash saved up from being in the air force.

I do agree though, it's always people who can't afford to do things right that end up having an issue and then whinging then selling the car for cheap as its "just too hard"

If your mate is going to go in the Navy, tell him to wait. My cousin who was 19 at the time went into the army with a bug eye WRX, a month later of owning that he got a 350hp RB26 R32 GTS-4, then got (while with GTS-4) a VK SS Group A (which is his current bunky daily!!), then sold the 32 to get a 5ltr VT Clubbie which he put a twin turbo kit on, and then sold that to get a 500hp atw 32 GTR which is now sold and I have no clue as to what he's getting next. This was all in the space of one year!! You're always out to try and beat your fellow defence force pals.

When I was selling my R I had this co-worker wanting to buy the car for her son. The reason 'to keep my son at home, as he wanted to move out of home and he is mad about Skylines'. Maybe he should try that trick on his dad, but then his ol man might want him out as well hahahaha.

If you look at an investment and only consider the ones that you will make a profit on then most things are a bad investment. If to you cars are a thing to get you from A to B, then yes, they are a bad investment. But if your car is something you enjoy, then spending money on it makes you happy, and thats what money is all about yes? You spend your life working hard so that you can have your creature comforts. In that sense, spending money on your car isnt a bad investment.

In any case, you may think its cheaper to have a small car compared to something like a Skyline. Fact is, all cars are a bottomless pit for money. Say you have an old Getz or something like that, you own it for 5 years, the whole time knowing that you are gonna buy a Skyline. That is 5 years you have spent pouring money into a car you dont want, all the while watching its value go down. Neither of those facts make you smile do they? Now i dont know about you, but i would much rather pay a little bit extra money and own a good sporty reliable car like a Skyline; which brings a smile to your face everytime you open the garage door, or top up the petrol. You enjoy driving everywhere you go, you dont dread that everyday drive to work or in my case uni.

I think it is unfair to say that someone of our age 'doesnt deserve' to own a sporty car. We have our entire lives to work hard for our possessions. My mate is joining the navy, the pay isnt great, but he gets $35000 a year, and there are no expenses in the Navy so he will build up a lot of savings while he is serving. While he is on duty the Navy pays for everything he needs, so really its a good idea.

You say id weep at the resale price of your GTR, but do you weep about it? Or do you enjoy what youve done to it? I spent over $5000 on my Holden Vectra just to keep it running, and ive only owned it for a year and a half. Thats a ridiculous amount of money to put into a car i was never going to keep.
