I got pulled over the other day, police said pop the bonnet, so i did. They told me they were gonna send out an EPA request or whatever to my house.

I have a HKS Air Pod filter, and a 3" Cat back zorst.

They told me the the filter has to be covered, not allowed to be in the enginebay uncovered. The police dude had a soarer TT btw.

Is this true? do i have to make a CAI partition to pass the EPA?

Cheers.

pretty much... my gf has one in her soarer and we have to take her car to Mcleod to be tested....

a) the exhaust is WAY to big and loud

B) she has a HKS Pod filter which is uncovered

only 2 mods she has and both she will get done for... hopefully they will give her time to get them changed tho.

where is this ****ing uncovered pod shit the cops are making up these days??

where is the ****ing rule on paper, or on a site.. I'd like to see it.

some pods are oiled type, some are not.. oiled types are illegal coz of the fire hazard crap.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the majority of the sh*t under the bonnet a fire hazard? P/S Fluid, Fuel, Oil etc. etc. Stupid rule. I've seen more P/S fluid fires than pod's!

I know, but that is apparently the reason. You're right though, anything can potentially be a fire hazard.

Cops need to relax, and laws need to be changed. Its not as if we're sending buckets of pollution into the atmosphere. Put 10 skylines together and i bet they put out combined pollution less than you're average Semi out there.

Its not as if big rims are going to make you spin out of control and crash.

Its not as if a boost controller is going to make your car explode, just make it go faster.

Its not as if a rear wing is going to fly off and kill somebody.. you'd have to be going pretty damn fast and it would have to be attached with sticky tape or something (although that ....).

Its not as if being too low means you're going to any less hurt somebody if you run them over.

Its not as if a loud exhaust is going to deafen somebody, or even put out any more noise than your average motorbike out there.

Its all a bit ridiculous, but thats the law for you sometimes.

big rims might rub against the arches if done incorrectly.

being too low might scrape over a hump and rupture an exhaust or worse, etc..

exhaust noise - well noise pollution. just because the harleys do it doesn't mean it's legal.

boost controller i dunno. maybe the ones you can change from the inside are not such a good idea. i mean if your friend is looking at the controller and presses a button and it increases the boost or something that could be dangerous.

granted they cant police everything (eg. making sure no loose objects exist in the car) - they can minimise the risk. unfortunately they have to consider the lowest common denominator and factor them into it as well.

i mean - how many cars have you seen are driven by the younger gen are actually roadworthy. one only has to see chapel st to see the epa and other defecting cars.

i guess it hurts the people that mod cars responsibly but that's the price we pay for some lunatics out there...

And who is that going to effect YOU, and your tyres.

In some areas, sure, but not everywhere. Then again - you ever heard you average road bike these days screaming its head off. Its louder than any car exhaust i have seen, and you can hear it from 100's of metres away.

boost controller i dunno. maybe the ones you can change from the inside are not such a good idea. i mean if your friend is looking at the controller and presses a button and it increases the boost or something that could be dangerous.

Thats stretching it a bit. By the same logic your mate could suddenly crank your stereo, deafen you and shock you so you crash. Just like the boost thingo - tell me you can "accidentally" up the boost. Even if that was a reason, there could just be guidelines on where they could be mounted, etc. The only thing is that its possibly increasing your car beyond its factory specifications - again, your problem more than anybody elses out there.

[i mean - how many cars have you seen are driven by the younger gen are actually roadworthy. one only has to see chapel st to see the epa and other defecting cars.

Yer, but its the only thing they can do to prevent certain sorts of people going down there other than saying "oh if you're 18 and an idiot you're banned from that area". Of course in a "free" society that is not possible.

And what about every other rust bucket out there driven around every day (:( - of course i wouldn't know what that is about). Tell me they are any more safe in unroadworthy condition than a new vehicle with increased crash protection, etc. that is slightly low or some crap.

There are just too many "ifs", "maybes" and "it could"...very few facts around any of them. People kill themselves no matter what you do..

if the tyre gets punctured that's not good not only for urself but can be for others...

bikes rev higher (13K rpm) - engines are more exposed - less mufflers - safety wise too it's good to be loud (but not too loud!) to let others know...

cops don't only defect imports - they DO defect unroadworthy cars - well the good cops do - and dont get me wrong - they are at a higher risk than us import boys... (and girls) - cant you dob in people with smoke out their exhaust??

the laws can be quite a-n-a-l but that's the way it is. if you don't agree with them or cant face the consequences if you get caught then dont get an import - get a commonwhore.

Um, no they don't... speaking from experience and the last couple of months, um, no they don't. "Oh thats unroadworthy, you better get that looked at - on your way mate".

Most of these laws were drafted up in the 70's and 80's, and actually have little relevence to the cars of many cars today..

Ha, i bet you a commondoor puts out more pollution than any Japanese car, already already pushing 10 year old antiquated technology and try and sell it to the Australian public. Fark, we didn't even sign the Keoto treaty, because Australia has one of the worst pollution per capita of any western country. Tell me we give a crap about air pollution when it comes to the heart of the matter. Its nothing to do with that.

Anyhow, i always crap on about this sorta stuff and beat the dead horse - but you know why, because it makes me angry. And so many people being all passive about it makes me angry too.. its the aussie lazy ethos "if it doesn't effect me i don't care".

Considering the amount of resources dedicated to pulling cars off the road or getting money of motorists compared to the effort and time spent to other major problems in our society such as drug abuse and major killers like suicide (which kills many many more people than on our roads and is growing), the Government needs to pull their head out of their ass.

    • You know, that is exactly the thing that I was thinking a coupe of hours ago. I even had a plan for a meme, involving one big one, another big one, and the Old El Paso girl saying "¿por que no los dos?"
    • NoS, 2 of the big ones.
    • Oh, that's grim. Something bad has been happening there.
    • Put an endoscope down the hole and saw this. Not quite all around the bore but a good 60% at least. Chin to the chest and towards further disappointments I guess.
    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
