Hey everyone, I own a VL with an RB25DET conversion. I had it shipped over from TAS a bit over 3 months ago, and I'm still struggling to get it rego'd! Took it to the pits, did everything they said, blah blah blah, and then I had to send off a form to get approval for my mods (very light - FMIC, 3" exhaust), and of course, the engine swap. Waited about a month and just heard back from them yesterday, they told me that they wanted me to get it Engineered, and here's the killer; emissions tested!

So yesterday, I took it to one of the engineers on the list that they supplied, and he was a great guy, and helped me, pretty much passed right there and then. Now all that's left is the emissions test. I've been told only two places do it that can be ADR approved, Kostecki ($450 base, and $130 every hour it takes), and Orbital Engineering (not confirmed prices as of yet). So I don't want to go there, find out I fail, then have to pay the $600 odd it takes to get a re-test. I've heard you can get emissions tests from normal workshops etc etc., for around $60.

So I was wondering, can anyone shed some advice on whether you think it's worth going for it straight away, or hunting around to find somewhere to pre-test? If that's the case, can anyone tell me somewhere that does the tests? HyperDrive unfortunately don't, and that's where I usually go.

My current setup is:

RB25DET

3" Exhaust (with what looks like the stock CAT)

FMIC

Pod

Can anyone tell me whether they think it's worth having a shot first go, because it doesn't seem like those minimal amount of mods would do much to bring it over the limit..

The things that the ADR test for are as follows:

- Carbon Monoxide

- Hyrdo Carbon

- Oxygen

- Carbon Dioxide

- Oxides of Nitrogen (Not to be confused with Nitrogen Oxide)

So after that essay, what I need to know is; Do you think it will pass as is? Or should I get somewhere to check it before-hand? And if that's the case, where can I get it checked?

Thanks for your time, really appreciate any help I can get.

Cheers, Joel

It's only just become enforced now. When I got mine done the IM240 test wasn't available to the public at the time, so I was able to submit my test done with a scangas, but I heard they would stop accepting those once it was available.... Looks like you will have to do that test, which sucks as only Kostecki will be able to do it, as unless they have changed Orbital only do it on a commercial basis for fleet cars etc, it's not/wasn't available to the public.

The test itself doesn't take long so the $130hr I'd assume would be labour charge in setting it up, getting the car ready etc, so ask them directly just what is involved with that.

But however your best bet would be to get scangas style checks done to see how they are coming up, as it will be a lot cheaper if you need to do more do reduce emissions, compliance workshops should be able to help you out with that.

Good luck anyway!

Thanks mate, any idea which workshops in particular could do this for me? That's why I'm so stuck, haha.

Pick one of the mechanical based workshops from there closer to where you live & give them a call to see if they do that sort of thing, but I heard you can get them from places like automasters too so maybe give them a call too

    • im sure mine stays in gear and wont shift unless i shift it? and for sure it wont go back to Auto mode if its put in manual mode? if i use paddles but its still in D then of course it goes back to auto mode. but yer if its in -+ and i use paddles it will not auto change gears what so ever and i have tried this. it will gear down if at a stop though which is kinda nice but goes back to 1st gear not D. i think it used to be like this with imports aswell i dunno if its really like it anymore like when i got my R33 it had alot of JDM options which local cars didnt have. Now local cars have kinda caught up even the lower models. but yer transfer rates and other things makes it almost on par.
    • Very decent bit of kit. Definitely black it out I reckon.
    • Because people who want that are buying euros. The people with the money to buy the aftermarket heads and blocks aren’t interested in efficiency or making -7 power, they’re making well over 1,000hp and pretty much only drive them at full throttle  best way to way make money is know your customer base and what they want and don’t spend money making things they don’t want.
