I would not discount the R34 so quickly mate especially the N1 version yes they may be getting on a bit now but in an event like targa driver skill and experiance play as much of a role in a succesfull campaign as the car. This would be proven by the fact that so many different makes and models have won the event over the last few years WRX' EVO ?, LAMBO, PORSCHE, GTR etc. If you look at it any of the cars in the top 10 maybee even top 20 would be capable of winning the event depending on driver skill/experiance and a little luck never goes astray in these type of events.

Agreed ! And as I stated in my post the R34 at $50,000 then spend $350,000 on it which may well be the difference between the Lambo's and the 34'. And yes I know it wouldn't be aloud to race, but imagine.

I also agree that the make of car doesn't seem all that important as driver experience. After so many years driving Targa these guys are memorizing the course a little better. There are some very talented drivers but only a few are in the running due to experience with Targa Tasmania. How in the hell do you explain a Mitsubishi shopping trolley keeping up with the Lambo's ? The GTR (and this is only my opinion I'm sure) is a big fat waddling pig that is competitive only because it is technologically better, and I really like GTR's, in fact, I am a died in the wool Nissan freak but let's face it, the Evo's dollar for dollar are the worlds best supercar. And yes I know the Lambo's are also big fat waddling cops.

The GTR's specs give no hint of the true brutality and real capability of this car. This waddling Pig has set more records in such a short period of time than almost any other car.

I have driven over 30 different "performance cars", from Porsche's to BMW's, limited Ferrari's, Imprezzas, Evo's Skylines from GTS to GTR, Lotus, Mazdas (Mainly rotaries) to name a few.

The R35 is the best all round package straight from the show room floor I have ever driven. Whilst I have not owned all the cars I have driven, I have certainly tracked most of them either on skid pans, motorkhanas or on full race tracks. The Evo is certainly up there, however it is by no means a "supercar" not by any strech of the imagination.

It is however an exceptional performance car.

What I am writing is also "opinion", however atleast I am backing my opinion with experience rather than speculation.

thank god someone said it. I'm sick of people rubbishing R35s as heavy, and understeering, and un-involving all without having driven one. I have owned all model GTR from 32-35 and have driven them all on road and track. and I can tell you in standard form the 35 is by far the most exciting drive standard. they do not feel like their weight would suggest. there is a lot more to a car than the spec sheet. I mean the GTR has "only" 300 or so kw at the wheels but it's a shitload faster than any other car I've driven with 300kw atw. and that's due to the torque curve, and the box and the way it makes that power.

until you drive one it's best to leave opinions on how they handle to those that have. and as for the car driving itself. turn the aids off. set gearbox to R, set suspension to R, and turn TC and DSC to OFF. then the car does what YOU tell it to. you want to light it up in 2nd at corner exit and hold that slide through 3rd? with even a small amount of skill you can. :D they are just a supremely capable car on and off track. I have driven plenty of other fancy cars too on and off track, porsches, lambos, ferraris etc even a ford GT supercar (not the falcon!). and the GTR is easily the measure of them.

But the Ford GT is cool and sounds mint...even i could get laid in a car like that. An R35 doesnt stand a chance in helping me in those stakes :D

- People pulling up beside me to talk

- People stopping me to take photos of the car

- Girls that want to go for a ride

I think you are underestimating the pulling power of this car........is there nothing the R35 cannot do :)

Gibbo, i am sure you are a nice guy...but i think you are underestimating just how repulsive i am. :D

I mean, it at leasts needs to be red with racing stripes if i am ever to have a chance. Plus, my Tag Le Mans jacket goes better with the GT then GTR :D

...and i have to say, i had a Lambo and Fezza parked in my carparking spaces for a few days at home. I was shocked, but not really surprised by how all of a sudden many of the good looking girls in the apartment complex came knocking on my door. I wish James was still my room mate, surely if i had of shown more initiative i would have bagged more flange then i did :)

Lol that is true...but I thought we were only getting you laid....no one loves a Nissan sports car more than Trailer trash....they especially love the GTR because they can spell it.

I can tell you all that no car has ever past me as quickly as Quinny did on Cethana this year

My bog standard R35 is seconds a lap quicker on circuits, than either my R33 or R34, at their best (both set up for Targa)

R35 just go very fast easily

Just so you understand, at no time did I say it wasn't a supercar or it didn't handle, by waddling pig I mean it's weight and only it's weight. At fifty years of age and in real estate for a few years I have driven a few cars and owned a few, unfortunately I gave up spending money on the damned things when I realized you shouldn't buy something you can't afford to bend.

However, as a road/targa weapon this is only the beginning for R35 GTR's. They are after all still relatively new. Full credit to winning Targa Tasmania. As a Nissan fan I have to say it is just too heavy and just too expensive and too complicated. I know I haven't driven one, I don't have to. As I said, "my opinion". But something I have noticed since they came out is the defensiveness you would find up on "The Mountain" (Mt. Panorama) if someone dares to HAVE an opinion. Up there I've seen knives pulled because someone said Brocky is a fag or my mates punching crap out of each other because one guy's 56' Chevy only beat the other guy's Monaro because it was a big block. Boyish stupidity. They are just cars after all.

The reason I keep going on about weight is because I can guarantee next year the Lambo's will not take it laying down and come up with something lighter or more powerful. So, as in my first post, will Nissan come out with a lighter road/race version of the GTR ? Targa is now one of the top road rallies in the world, and Porche will also try a comeback. :P

- Too heavy? But it wins races and beats practically any stock car sold in Australia in the quarter mile.

- Too expensive? Being one of the most technologically advanced super car in the world - with the performance numbers to back it up, you want it to be

cheaper? You want Nissan to go bankrupt or something?

- 'I know i haven't driven one' - practically sums it all up. It's like me saying that i don't like eating steak - even though i've never eaten it before. Sounds stupid doesn't it? I bet you haven't even seen a GTR in person.

Don't pretend that you like Nissan. You're just a hater like the rest of the Anti-GTR fanboys

The older GT-R's stand no chance against the new ones in these events. Infact any of the older cars really don't stand a chance at all. Whilst some of them seem to do ok with some top 20 results they are miles off of where the fast guys are in reality.

All you really need to do is look at the results from even the last 3 years and look at the stage times.

Take The Sideling for example as 2 identical stages done is same conditions (dry). 2006 was won by Steve Glenny in a 2002 STi in 7:54. This year it was won by Weeks in the Lambo in 7:36. Steve's winning 2006 time doesn't even get him in the top 10 these days. And yet he got to use racefuel rather than just 98RON as everyone did this year.

Even this year - look at the final classification for the Mordern V Early Modern. 12 mins seperated the winner of Modern v winner of Early Modern (2002-1992 vehicles). And Rick Shaw is no hack and know's that car of his well.

But these new cars are just so much more capable. We did a straight line test between my R34 (375rwkw's) and my R35 (stock) from 40-200km/hr and the R35 wins by a car length. I still don't know how or why this is the case but it is. And despite being on factory shocks and tyres it also goes around corners better than the R34 on full set-up race tyres. And then there is the gearbox - in Targa I estimate that to be worth 1s/km alone and thats HUGE in this game. The R35 isn't the perfect Tarmac Rally car - there are some..... issues that people need to be aware of and drive around (it doesn't deal well with getting airbourne for example - the computers shut down) - but it's hard to argue that it isn't the best thing going around right now that's for sure. It's just a very capable all round car straight out of the box.

I'm just up-set I can't afford to race one! LOL
