Guys, details are a bit scarce, but a Nissan (*Nissan Japan* I might add, none of this Nissan USA bollocks) insider leaked to Horide Auto Mag that a new Silvia is on it`s way, but don`t expect any prototypes or anything until 2006. They also mentioned the powerplant, a QR20VET, with all the emmissions gear, to keep the new Silvia in line with it`s predecessors.

No hint of a chassis yet, but the FR configuration is a definate...:P

But OMG, it (the CG image) looks just like the Fairlady Z!!! I mean... 350Z!!! Not another one...

At this point, I`d like to give a big "thank you" smack to the back of the head of Carlos Gohsn, for f*cking up the momentum and key design of yet another of Nissans legendary sports cars...

I`ll have pics posted up on Mon/Tue.

Yeah I have mixed emotions about Carlos.

He DID put Nissan into profitability.. but I still feel the most AWESOME cars Nissan released where definately the 89-94 series of cars.. the Original S13's, R32's, 300ZX's..

Let's face it guys, the 180SX, the R32 GTR, the 300ZX twin turbo.. and lets not forget, my car.. the Silvia K's, (the original silvia) the quiet legend. :P

There where some very very clever people working for Nissan who did the R&D, and mechanical work for these production lines.

The rest have been tamed and commercialised IMO. Not that theres anything wrong with that.. but these cars just seem very

'raw' in comparison to the newer models. I like that. I truly think these cars will be Classics like the old Monaro's and sh*t.

Rezz: can you show us the CG pics?

well of cos the SR will be long retired by the time the S16 designs get drawn up....just curious becos of the engine codes....

QR=Engine designation?

20=I'm guessing capacity of 2L

VET= here's where i'm confused...don't Nissan normally have a 'D' somewhere to denote dual cams? What does 'V' mean? A V-series engine?

QR = New engine model designation... nothing to do with "SR".

20 = Thats right AeroGrace, 2.0L... hold the OJ and Milk...

VET = Right again omp, Variable cam timing EFI (duh!) Turbo... it`s gonna have Direct Injection too.

The engine in the current X-Trail 2.0GT is an SR20VET, so Nissan DOES have a habit of putting "V" in the engines code designation...

Variable valve timing on SR20's and RB25's is much different to Variable valve timing AND LIFT found in "V" desingated motors. Variable LIFT can only be done with a change of cam lobe (like vtec). This is whatthe "V" stands for, its called NEO-VVL. And is dare i say it, bloody good.

See if you can find some info on the Nissan Pulsar VZR-N1 from a couple of years ago, it featured a 198bhp SR16VE... thats right, 200 neddies from 1.6 litres with no turbo. Made just to kick the Civic Type R's butt in the jap touring car classes.

For many a year it was said VVL systems and turbo's were a no go together, but i believe the SR20VET is the first production turbo car with the system. Could be wrong.

Good on Nissan for bringing back the Silvia, their car range was looking a bit of a travesty when youve got a 2 litre turbo off roader and no middle weight sports car to speak of.

The V engines wouldn't be a nissan version of something along the lines of an "FE" toyota engine, by any chance, of course with the VVL?

I basically mean a narrow angle valve placement, narrow cylinder head, with one primarily driven cam and one driven indirectly via a gear on the primary driven cam?

or am I on the wrong track?

No floody I think your right on the money... although some enthusiasts might cringe at the idea of a narrow angle cam placement, effectively a "One and a half" cam instead of a true twin cam (well, you know what I mean, the airflow through the narrow angle heads is hardly "performance" style), but the QR20VET might be getting direct injection... so the VVL, the Direct Injection and Turbo combo sounds good:)

Direct Injection is where the injectors are positioned so that they spay directly into the piston bore, as opposed to being positioned in the intake runners.

Up until recently, Direct Injection was only used in low power applications, the most common (in Japan) being the Mitsubishi Galant GDI. As you can imagine, extremely precise air/fuel contol is possible with this, creating better fuel economy and much less emmissions.

But now, Direct Injection and Turbo is the key to High-power/Low-emmissions... and Nissan is at the forefront as usual... :P

Id just like to point out silvias have been around for YEARS, such as 60s I think, I know this, cause I have seen a few. And personnally I feel they are one of the nicest looking cars nissan have ever built.

    • Hi guys, has anyone either purchased or built themselves a rotisserie for their car before? I can only just justify the need for one hence why I should just make one but at the same time, if I make one I can kiss another 4 weeks of potentially productive car working time goodbye because I'm building a bloody rotisserie....  I mainly want it for the application of the body deadener.  Cleaning the old stuff off, priming and then colour over the deadener doesn't worry me, it's just the application using the Schutz Gun that I feel would achieve a significantly better finish painting it side on and keeping the Schutz Gun upright.  I don't think they would work well on the side let alone almost upside down for some areas.  If the product I use (Terosun, etc) could work through a HVLP ok then it might be ok to apply without the rotisserie.   I can get one of these style ones for about $1200 which is pretty good value-     I reckon if I made one it would cost around $500 but it's more the time that it would take is more of a killer than the cost.  They look to hold their value pretty well second hand so I could always sell it after using it and realistically only lose $200-$300 at worst.  Or keep it and buy another project when this one finally sees the light of day... Anyone selling one...? Cheers!  
    • While it is a very nice idea to put card style AFMs into the charge pipe (post intercooler, obviously), the position of the AFM and the recirc valve relative to each other starts to become something that you really have to consider. The situation: The stock AFM is located upstream the turbo, and the recirc valve return is located between the AFM and the turbo inlet, aimed at the turbo inlet, so that it flows away from and not through the AFM. Thus, once metered air is not metered again, neither flowing forwards, or backwards, when vented out of the charge pipe. When you put the AFM between the turbo outlet and the TB, there is a volume of pressurised charge pipe upstream of the AFM and there is a volume of pressurised pipe downstream of the AFM. When the recirc valve opens and vents the charge pipe, air is going to flow from both ends of the charge pipe towards the recirc valve. If the recirc valve is in the stock location, then the section between it and the TB doesn't really matter here - you're not going to try to put the AFM in that piece of pipe. But the AFM will likely be somewhere between the intercooler and the recirc valve, So the entire charge pipe volume from that position (upstream of the AFM, back through the intercooler, to the turbo outlet) is going to flow through the AFM, get registered as combustion air, cause the ECU to fuel for it, but get dumped out of the recirc valve and you will end up with a typical BOV related rich spike. So ideally you want to put the AFM as close to the TB as possible (so, just upstream of the crossover pipe, assuming that the stock crossover is still in use, or, just before the TB if an FFP is being used) and locate the recirc valve at the turbo outlet. Recirc valve at the turbo outlet is the new normal for things like EFRs anyway. In the even of a recirc valve opening dumping all the air in the charge pipe, pretty much all of it is going to go backwards, from the TB to the recirc valve near the turbo outlet. But only a small portion of it (that between the TB and the AFM) will pass through the AFM, and it will pass through going backwards. The card style AFMs are somewhat more immune to reading flow that passes through them in reverse than older AFMs are, so you should absolutely minimise the rich pulse behaviour associated with the unavoidable outcome of having both a recirc valve and an AFM in the charge pipe.
    • Yep, in my case as soon as I started hearing weird noises I backed off the tension until it sounded normal again. Delicate balance between enough tension to avoid that cold start slip and too much damaging things.
    • I'm almost at a point where I feel like changing the alternator. Need to check the stuff you mentioned first though.
