Howdy,

New South Welshman here... me and my mates are thinking of venturing south of the border this year for our annual snow trip... the last few years we have been to either perisher or thredbo, and for a change of pace thought we'd give falls creek a try... my parents went there a few years back and loved it... just wanted to see if anyone has been?? what did you think??? can you recommend a good place to stay? preferably stumbling distance from a good pub... would prefer to stay at falls rather than drive in/out each day... limits our drinking and boarding hours

anything we should know before we make our way down eg. victorian laws regards carrying snow chains ect

ill be taking my rs4 stag and when approached by the snow council people in jindy i have to explain that its awd and they let me go on my way... in nsw its the law to carry snow chains in marked areas for 2wd only, 4wd is not compulsory so i dont bother

Cheers Rick

I've stayed at Fall heaps. I use to stay at the Frying Pan inn, but that's now gone. :P

The best thing to do if there's a few of you is to try and get a Apartment.

I've always liked the Falls Creek Hotel....easy stumbling distance from the Frying Pan....and not a far walk from the Man pub as well. The Man is the place to hit on Monday night....for Big Cup Night!!!

I prefer Falls to Hotham, but only just.... and if you can swing the helicopter ride $$$, do it. Helicopters run between Falls and Hotham daily (weather depending)

In Victoria, YOU MUST CARRY CHAINS, IT'S THE LAW!!!! Being 4wd and AWD you probably won't have to fit em, but you can be checked (and i have by the local Police) and fined if you don;t have them on board.

That said, a hessian bag with some chain bought from Bunnings, then the bag done up with a Cable tie and some bullshit writing on a tag saying "Nissan", could create a easy disguise...... :):P

Off mountain i recommend the Bogong Moth Hotel.... just at the bottom of the mountain, and they have ace Steaks. The pub across the road is not bad , but does shut early.

thanks for the advice... old mans got chains ill take them with me all will be good

yer theres about 7 or 8 of us going so an apartment seems like the way to go... its looking as if we'll be saving between 500 and 900 dollars each if we stay in an apartment instead of a hotel with meals included (apartment works out 4-500 per person hotels 10-1400 per person) i wont eat 500 dollars worth of food in a week but sure as shit ill try drinking it :P

is there national park fees to be paid??? i usually get a season pass try to get at least 14 days skiing a year plus the old man likes my car so he takes it down for maybe another 5 or 6 days on top of that works out heaps cheaper than buying a day pass every day but this year im not sure what to do since the national parks thingo is operated state by state will i need a victorian park pass aswell as a nsw pass since im going to perisher earlier in the season

dont go to falls creek unless you are there for the park... the rest of the mountain is as flat as a chessboard

hotham is great, and buller is great but needs a good season

i thought it has a shitload of black and blue runs

well at least the trailmap shows it

Went to Buller last year and they had massive snowfall.

Falls this year, when are you going?

Like they have all said, get an apartment if possible, makes it easier if numbers are not firm too.

Considering Buller is already running lifts, should be a bumper season.

Mt Buller is a the most stupid mountain in Victoria. The ONLY reason it's popular is that it's close to Melbourne, Muppet's don't like to drive far.

I guarantee you if Mt Buller was 7+ hours from Melbourne, it would have the attendance of a Syphilis convention!

And don't mention the old "it has more lifts' line.... 6 lifts on a flat run full of Muppet's, Yuppies and Dickheads is not anyone's idea of fun!

Hotham is the best mountain in Victoria, Falls is 2nd :D

Mt Baw Baw would be the best, but it needs another 500+metres added on top of it.

Actually that's what the Vic government should be doing....2 simple things. Start digging at Sorrento towards the heads, and then take all that dirt up to Baw Baw. Open up the bay and you'll have better surf breaks than QLD (yes and colder ones), and the extra height on Baw Baw will improve the the amount Antarctic storms that it receives.... :)
