Brake Advise!

series of events.

1. the drum brake cylinder (RR) blew out and brake fluid went everywhere.

2. brakes still worked fine for about 1 week. i limited driving only within 2 ks of my house.

3. today i started my car to move it and the brakes were sweet. left the car running for about 10 minutes and when i got back in the car to move it again, the brake pedal just hit the floor.

i popped the bonnet and could hear an air leak. i used a garden hose (budget stethoscope) to find the leak and it's coming from between the master cylinder and booster.

do i need to replace everything or just the drum cylinder and give it a bleed?

Check the vacuum connection on the booster or probably is the master cyl stuffed

probably master cylinder is stuffed. booster doesnt have anything to do with fluids, just air.

my master cylinder was leaking very slowly over a period of weeks and ate away at my paint.

its not expensive to get them reconditioned.

Have you fixed the leaking wheel cylinder? If not, all your brake fluid has probably leaked out. YOu should still be able to get front braking though, as the brakes will be on separate circuits.

Replace the wheel cyllinder, flush the fluid and top up. This should bring it back.

The slow leak in the booster shouldn't cause brake failure. If your booster system fails, then your brake pedal will just get harder. Still, worth fixing the leak as well.

In fact, I'd be replacing both rear wheel cylinders (and probably worth rebuilding the front calipers too). If one wheel cyl failed, the other is probably not too far behind.
