Firstly, awesome forums, will be here a fair while methinks, :D. Back to the topic at hand...

Work finished early, decided to gun it. My car's unmodified, a pissy Kia 4-cyl I was given (will inherit dad's R33 soon enough...) and a vito radar was parked on other side of the road. Were two roads, I was goin downhill and it was only, like, 50m from the lights on that end so I doubt I could hit 80 where it was, plus trees in the middle.

Overall, think I got caught, or how to these things WORK exactly? Always wanted to know, but a topic I found here wasn't very specific.

I don't completely understand what you mean but I'll give it a go.

If it was a parked speed camera, 4WD they get you as you go past the speed camera and take a picture of the back of the car. If it was a parked van speed camera they can get you as you are approaching the camera and as you go past depending on how they are set up. If the speed camera was set up on the opposite site of the road then its unlikely it was getting cars going in both directions, unless it is only a two lane road.

If you got done for speeding you will receive a notice in the mail within 14 days stating the fine and the loss of points. If you don't have enough points then you will lose your license.

If your unsure you probably didn't get done because the flash is fairly noticeable.

If it was just a cop with a radar then you wont get a fine if they didnt pull you over.

That is my general understanding of how the system works. Hopefully I helped.

Speed camera is on the same side of the road as you. They don't (or shouldn't) take pics of oncoming traffic.

Don't worry. 50m. 80kph in a Kia?

Works pretty simply though.

You speeding.

Drive past a camera because you were not concentrating.

Your picture is taken.

Fine is sent to your letterbox.

You pay fine (after checking the pic, of course!)

Thanks both of ya, I feel more confident now that I didn't get booked. Thanks for the detailed info both of you, and it was a four lane area, two going into my city, two going out, with the normal trees dividing both sets of two-lanes, and it was over on the other. Sick of crap cars the missus wants, either gettin the R33 from parent or getting my own in a few months, :P. I'll get a 4-door to keep her happy, :D. Needless to say I'll be a tad more careful, and I meant 50m from the opposite end of lights, I didn't hit 80 in 50m, ^_^.

Had a mate who reckoned that he "couldn't have possibly got to 80..." when he was going down a hill after a set of lights. He was doing 81, which was 21 over the limit so he lost his license (P plater).

My advice: cars will go surprisingly fast down a hill.

Ah, yeah I'm a recent P Plater, got em late 'cause of overseas study and such for a couple of years, and I need my car for work too so I was kinda worried, but not now, :D. I'll just take it a bit more careful and any sight of a van on the side of the road = slowing down.

i've had like literally 5 f**king fines from those private contractor cars, all for around 5km/h over, and most of them I didnt even realise the car was there at the time. Shameless revenue raising, at least in NSW the cops do it and have a sign out so you know you've been done.

In Vic at least its around 3 points unless you were doing insane speeds.

P.S don't listen to your mrs re cars, worst thing you can do.

Shameless lack of concentration more like it.

they usually have two loops

near lane and far lane which can be in the opposite direction

i think they have to knock off 2kmph to allow for anomolies so if you were doing exactly 81 in a 60 zone and did get busted, you will find your speed was 79.

hate to jump on the bandwagon but if you speed and get caught then you broke the law and committed a crime. sad but true
