Defected :(

Hi Guys

I've just moved here from VIC and finally got defected last night... exhaust too low and my front LHS tyre bald (near the marker)

I've been given 3 days where I can drive my car and then 21 days to clear the defect after that....

Anyone know what happens if I drive my car after the 3 days? Also if I can just get the mechanic to clear the defect or do I need to got to RTA?

You need to go to a Mechanic that can give you a pink slip. They can do the inspection and help you rectify any issues if you require it.

Most mechanics can offer this service.

If you drive after the three day's and are caught (the yellow sticker stands out so I wouldn't suggest it) you will be fined for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, probably get demerit points and also might be in more strife for driving contrary to an officers order (or something to that effect).

the tyre certainly isn't bald.... they just noted it as that!!

it's just a pain that i work fulltime so basically only have saturday to fix the issues... even though they are simple to sort out... very annoying

Simple things like tyres near the markers are good indicators to change the tyres. sure there might be a little more lift left, but it wont perform as well as a new tyre.

Also, if you didn't get a sticker, they would still have it marked on your number plates. Saturday is within three days. Spend the day getting the car to the required standards mate. It will keep everyone around you as well as yourself safer.

Last time I checked (and every mechanic has told me this, but call one up and ask for yourself cause I don't want to be the cause of more trouble) you can drive your car after those 3 days, but ONLY to a workshop (normally the closest possible one), and only if you have an apointment, so call before you go!

go back to melbourne, when i used to live there they would let any car in almost any condition (even with heaps of rust) road worthy.... don't know if its changed now but i'm only talking bout 10 years ago....

Thanks for the personal attack mate you don't know my driving history though. I currently drive, and have for nearly 3 years, a totally standard car. I enjoy the lack of hassles that new car warranty gives. Most of the NSW SAU members that know me will also agree that even when I owned my skyline I always went to the track for drifting, circuit and drags and always kept modifications within the ADR and RTA guidelines. Not once being pulled over for anything more than an RBT. Even amongst my mates it's a running joke on anyone with a fast car that until they get a timeslip from WSID they have no proof that their car is any faster than my diesel golf

As you can maybe tell, I like most responsible members on here, might not be saints but we like to do things safely and keep within the law so that we don't have to be catching buses to work. There are rules, we all know them and have ample access to learn them if we don't. So I see no excuse to break them if they are geniunely there for the safety of the community. While the police may seem unfair, they are one person using their judgement to enforce the law. Sometimes they get it wrong, but for things like bald tyres, poor or unengineered modifications and alike I don't blame them for being heavy handed. Anyone who has been in that situation might feel like the victim but probably don't realise what a true victim might feel like when a driver has made a poor judgement to not maintain or poorly modify their car has ruined their lives.

Sorry to harp, but until many owners of modified cars realise that laws are put in place and enforced for the common good of a society they will continue to be harrassed and picked on.

btw - your seat modification may not have been safe for a few reasons. Working in the engineering field allows me to appreciate good work as opposed to backyard dodgyness and hence the laws and standards that enforce good practice and the documentation to prove it.

I hope that clears up why I so often go on about it.

Revenue making plays a big part in these "laws". try and justify it al you like.

when someone gets defected, he feels shitty enough without coping the "the laws are put in place for your safety" fairytale.

i get really annoyed at people that whinge and complain when they get defected and always blame it on the cops.

i got defected once. sure i wasnt happy about it but i took it got it fixed and engineered and since then had no trouble at all with the police or anything. its amazing what sticking to the rules can do for you.

and trust me its not always the cars that get picked on. they way people drive have a big impacy on being "targeted" by the cops.

i use to drive a corolla and i had more trouble with the cops than you could imagine. so when i finally realised how much of a danger i was to others on the road by driving like a tool i changed my attitude and since then ive have fewer problems than ever before.

since owning my skyline ive only been booked once for speeding and got my defect. now that the car complies i know i wont have that problem again. as for the speeding sometimes it just happens and you can put it down to wrong place at the wrong time.

people just need to realise that if your car doesnt comply to the laws then you cant go blaming the cops. they are just doing their jobs..

relax guys..... he's just shitty that he's been done and its allot of wasted time and effort clearing the probs while there are a million other cars worthy of defects driving all around him, and i know he's thinking.... "why the hell can he drive with that..." sort of mind set...

besides a bald tyre in the dry is allot more grippy than a fresh tyre because it has more surface area in contact with the ground... untill you hit the cloth and steel or it starts raining.... then its like driving on ice...

also there are people getting away with dodgier things than seats and tyres..... i couldnt afford to repair my faulty front brakes on my kia rio so i relied on dropping gears (in auto), driving slow, and handbreaking for 3 months.... now the same prob is back 6 months later. lucky i got the line now lol..... bloody dodgy kia breaks

well got it all done by 12pm saturday... no issues....

I have no issues with the defect just that I was given 3 days to clear it... in VIC we get 14 days or something like that....

We all know what the laws are... and well there are plenty of other cars in this world that are on the roads and unsafe.. much worse then mine... just cause it's thursday night and i'm driving in the city in an import I get targeted... this cop was behind a supra who he'd just pulled over before me then he pulled out from behind it... over took a car just to get too me....

this is the first defect i've got as well i might add... i've owned plenty of imports all modified legally

If the penalties for all traffic offences were just demerit points do you think the system would still be as effective a deterrent?

The majority of people are inherently dense, you have to spank them just like their mummy and daddy used to for any lesson to sink in.

Public floggings are unfortunatly illegal so hurting them financially is the only way to assist people in a lesson well learnt.

How come you were given only 3 days to drive it before the you'll get handed a canary, when I was defected I had a full 14days and drove around until the last 3 days, even got pulled over once and they notified me that I had a defect on the system for my exhaust and bov etc, but yeah kept driving.

Have things changed so much in the last year????

It depends purely on what the copper rights down.

The copper can give you one HOUR to get the car off the road.

I got given 21 days for mine for "passing the attitude test"
