R35 Gtr Review In Herald Sun

Paul Gover from the Herald/Sun is NOT of the same opinion as Kevin Hepworth from CarsGuide Daily Telegraph who gives the R35 the .

Just as Jeremy Clarkson AIN'T of the same opinion as James May.

HEART AND SOUL is subjective. This is NO substitute for OBJECTIVE issues like...

i) straight line performance (already laudede by Mr Gover)

ii) cornering

iii) gear change specs

iv) dual clutch trans

v) braking ability without fade (as in Spec-V)

vi) road-holding

BUT! BUT! Exhaust note sound from a titanium system in the Spec-V. NOW THAT'S HEART AND SOUL FOR YOU!

Wow... the carsguide is still as rubbish as I remember.

I read less than a 1/4 of the article and felt like i was reading an article by a very old man (who is unaware of things such as the internet and iphones) telling me what is wrong with society these days. What a sad sad man.

I think I will go by J Clarkson's review of the new GTR "They have created a new yard stick".

Good work Paul, at least in the current economy the chance of you being on the unemployment line is much higher.... sooner the better! I haven't driven an R35 so I can't comment, but I can relate to what he is saying in some respects. I know it's a completely different beast, but I used to drive an Audi A4 Quattro Turbo a few years back. It was a beautiful car, went well enough, handled pretty decently, was super refined but I didn't enjoy it. It was too good for it's own good, and took the fun out of driving for me. I drive a Clubsport now, and it may not be anywhere near as polished, but it's pretty good fun and has a lot of character to it. This may not be the same thing in your eyes, but just food for thought.

But hey, I'd love an R35 GT-R parked in my driveway

I use to go on Fast Autos Forum, which is a USA forum and that's all they did, nit pick at the most pointless things when they haven't even driven the car.

That's what that review sound like to me, but he probably did drive it...

Your right, different cars have different characteristics, it's what makes the car what it is.

I am heavily in favour to twin turbo's as I enjoy the response and blast it gives but also had tested a TickFord TE50 V8 and the low down torque was impressive.

2 Totally different cars and each to there own.

for eg when he talks about the Quinn targa win he goes on to say "but its Quinns 11th attemp in the targa"??? meaning what ??? that he was a shoe in to win it coz he has been going for 10 years?? and also he used to race porsche b4 that ?? so is the porsche a shit car or is the GTR a shit car cos its his 11th time....no idea wat point his tryin to put across......

but going from the tone of the article his trying to put down his win.....

on a seperate note i heard quinn on S E N 1116 sunday morning at 6am talking about targa...and from wat i heard the guy who came 4th in the evo ?(his son or friend) will be getting the winning GTR of 09 targa coz its "roooted" and Tony quinn will be getting another NEW R35 GTR for next years 2010 targa.....

so there will be 2 heatrless souless machines for sure in next years race......

Every complaint and issue he has with the car is valid - as is every praise of the car warranted

It is fast, but it is heavy. It is very clever, but surely a dipping mirror, reverse camera and parking sensors could have been included on the car. It is wonderful on a racetrack and absolutely pointless on speed-restrained roads. It does sound shit, it does clunk and make funny noises, it does remind you that at the end of the day - it's still a Datsun...

But I love it. Every time I drive it I just want to keep going. It's so stupidly and accessibly fast, but that's part of the fun.

Does the car have a soul?

There's no emotional connection like you have with a Ferrari, there's no feeling that your are driving decades of history and development like in a Porsche, there are no stupid quirks that you would have with a Brumby ute - but there is undeniably personality. It's more Astroboy than Billy Elliot - and that doesn't make it wrong, just different.

Anyway - read the article again. His decision is based on a fair and reasoned analysis - my decision is based on my own interests and passions.

the way the article comes across is that he basically hates the car...and how does he back up his claims? by comparing the GTR to a POS brumby ...now if he had made some good points prior to the tongue and cheek brumby comments ok mayb i would of giggled a little....but his whole articles is that the car is heavy? yes go on?? wats your point ?? it also is quickest around a certain race track....

it has no soul? bcoz it is too smooth? or too close to the playstation generation? sorry i thought these days a car has to be quiet and pass 1 million emmisions tests and good for the environment etc etc....

it doesnt have parking sensors or a reverse camera ? it also doesnt have a BMW or Merc badge either...and i think its focus is to be a hell of a fast road/track car.... not a daily soccer mum lux 4wd with all these sensors to park the thing at the supermarket

no i have not driven the car but i have read quiet a few reviews both good and bad...and the herald sun article is plain rubbish.

also in the same paper didnt it win the best sports car of the year award?

I think you have to start with who on the forum 'claims' to be an expert. First of all a motoring journo' like this guy gets paid to make this claim and so his review is naturally put forward to be scrutinised by the paying public. This is evident by the 'comments' section to it , so lets certainly feel free to stick the boot in where it's warranted. We are wanting a review on a performance car so it might be understood that this is the area we look hardest at the review, the performance verdict. This guy has been in the industry for a long time so I am really let down with how lame some of his last reviews have been on various cars.

You also have to remember that good old Paul has a track record of GTR hate, he was making big deals out of Porka's claim against the GTR's ring time, if you recall.

Looking at some of the critical elements we see his weak logic at play.

The weight comments. A C63 is as fat as the GTR weight wise and has less aero going it's way and suspension and and and.... But, you know what. Neither of these cars 'feel heavy'. If reviewers weren't told, they would guess it was a super light car by the way it responds. There are plenty of reviews around that testify to the 'light and responsive' feel to the car.

he never got to test the brakes but, makes comment that they won't last?

Picking cars like the Lotus also disqualify some of his 'parking' and other comfort requirement whines.

You don't need to look hard to see the contradictions.

He's laid a poo this time. Maybe he should retire now, he's had a good run and once was a decent motor journo?

The problem with reviews like his.....is the lack of complete testing...take it to a few tracks then live

with the Car for 2-3 weeks using it as a daily driver etc....and then give some detailed information from

all this testing and hold-out with opinions to the end........not just vague opinions and comparisons

from start to end....

And yes this Car has a Japanese Soul just like My Cayman has a German Soul.......
