Hey people,

Just wanted to get some peoples opinions on this, maybe find out what i would actually need to do in each case... I am currently putting money away for one of these ideas.

1. I have always wanted an R34 GTR. So in a few years i could just buy one straight out, possibly get it imported if the currency is behaving.

2. I am considering just doing a turbo conversion on my R34 GT, making it a GT+T. What parts would i need for this and how much am i looking at? I am assuming that after everything is done, including labor and parts and everything, it would cost around $10000???

3. Someone on here gave me the idea of doing a complete engine swap. Then i saw another member selling his GTR V-Spec II engine for $8800 or something like that. So my last idea is to buy a GTR engine, and put it in my GT. DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING about this sort of thing though lol, so would the engine fit, what problems am i looking at, who in Perth would do it for me, etc?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated,

Cheers :)

uuuusually to budget for a engine conversion you budget 2 to 3 times the cost of the engine to put it in.. but as this is a 26 replacing a 25 the engine part of the conversions shouldnt be too much or too hard, but all the supporting components will have to be brought up to spec, ie driveline, transmission, brakes etc..

for instance i got quoted $16,000 to put a s6 13btt in my mx5, the cost of the engine was $3,500.. and this was by the best workshop qualified to do this conversion.. the reason the price was soo much was because the only thing that was going to be mx5 at the end of the conversion was the shell..

You could build a engine for $8800 and it would be better then a Vspec engine

only advantage vspec has is the 24u block? (i think)

or you could buy a rb25 half cut for around $3500-4000 then swap it in should come well under 10k

as for buying a R34 GTR you can just save up but it would resale better then your current modded/converted R34

however if you want boost now a engine swap would be more sensible

hmmm engine swap would be teh way to go cause the GT+T would be high compression + turbo hmmm its ok i guess but wouldn't be able to pump high horse power....i did and engine swap mine was NA stuff started to break....e.g gear box etc so i hadd to replace everything sooner or later even did a 5 stud conversion and diff etc......lots fo money wasted if i had a choice i'd sell out and buy a GTR too :) hope that helps

Save your money and get the GT-R.

If your paying a workshop to do the whole lot, you'll be paying out the ass, It won't be the same as a GT-R and you'll have all the other issues with a modified car. Plus you wont get any of your money back when you eventually sell it.

A stock 34 GT-R wont make all the strange noises, will be easier to sell when youve finished with it and will generally be nicer.

My 2c.

have u considered selling ur gt and buying a gtt? ull save more money for sure. then have fun with the gtt while u save for a gtr. but if its the gtr motor u want for now, get many quotes and go the swap.

what i think would be the best idea is.. grab a gtr motor but keep ur rb25 motor around and when it comes to buying a gtr u can swap ur old rb25 back into the gt then sell it as a whole? then ull have ur sic gtr motor to wack into the new gtr. plus u can sell the stock gtr motor that comes with the car.. ya dig? just a thought

Well if i sold the GT and bought a GTT, i would be spending about $10000 just to get the same mods i have on the GT... I might just leave it NA hey, see how much power i can get out of the RB25DE without wearing it out too much. Then get they GTR in a couple of years

You spent 10k in mods on a non-turbo? how? why?

Have a look at the Naturally Aspirated section of the forum, there are people in there who, for some unknown reason, love their N/A RB's.

My opinion, cut your losses and stop wasting money on the non-turbo.

Yeah, the fact is dude, not to rag on you or anything, but if you don't know how to do it yourself it's EXPENSIVE to get someone else to do it. Generally cos you always get these stupid little issues that slow things down, then you cant get a part, then your cars in their garage for a few weeks, *goes downhill*

Did you spend 10K on minor engine mods, stereo, kit and rims? Or was that 10K all engine work?

Sell the GT, get a GTT or save money now and get a GTR soonish. N/A is silly if its a skyline. Remember whatever mods you put into a car expect it to not increase the value of the car by much at all. aka Money Pit

listen to this man :D

how much is an R34 NA manual worth? 11-13kish?

sell it, buy R34 GT-T, few years buy GTR

best bet

I was going to convert my NA R33 to turbo, but realised it'd be cheaper to sell and get a GTSt.

Could have sold it for $9k, but unfortuately only got $8k for it because someone hit the side of it.

Bought my new 300hp Series 2 for $15k, only a $5k difference for better brakes, suspension, engine, more power, better body, and better interior.

Just save for the GTR

    • Knowing how slow their other compressors are that connect to the cars battery, you'd want to hope it's one hell of a slow leak!
    • So why can’t the front pipe just be listed as custom make? why does everything have to have a brand name to it? or if you have bought the car like this and have no idea about anything at all or no knowledge what so ever of parts how are you supposed to inform them of what it is you have exactly?
    • Yep, I'd be interested to hear how it works out in the end.
    • Because all parts that are put into your papers usually are assigned a badging if they did not come with one. So other people can just check that badging to tell if it is the parts your papes outline. But my pipe has NOTHING on it whatsoever. No idea why this even passed as a Mines pipe to begin with. I see this going two ways: -nobody cares and it's a non-issue, but that is unlikely -the pipe will just have to be assigned a bagding, for sake of argument, a Mines logo, and the papers corrected accordingly If it interests you I will post what the actual solution ended up being. All I care about is that it has to sound equal length and nobody can screw me later on because of a pipe being illegal.
    • The fasteners to the pipe are not subject to TÜV I guess, if we really start putting nuts and bolts through technical tests I'm going to hang the people responsible and then myself. Usually on a modern-ish EU normed car, you would just replace the pipe. Because if you start hacking away at it and welding new pieces on the cops will definitely find a reason to tow your car. That is just how it is sadly. On old cars and imports with no clear "standard" stuff like that won't matter too much. Most cops or inspectors probably won't even really know what they are looking at. But there is experts for this stuff even among cops, and some of them know the rules to a T and even have extensive knowledge about many vehicles. For "just a pipe" to be legal it usually is included in a set of parts, like a complete intake kit or a full exhaust. For example my exhaust needs to pass a noise test, meaning they have a standardized test track with a set of instructions and they run the car through there 3x for an average noise value that is 75dB(a) at point x of the test track. If it's above that, fail. For a turbo setup to be put in your papers you have to do dyno runs, emissions testing etc. So quite costly
