I have just purchased an r33 built by top fuel in japan.

And since i know very little about turbo engines as im a converted v8 man,i need some advice on what would be the correct boost pressure to run in this car for normal street use.The car is currently running 1.4bar.

rb25det,

hks 30/37s ball bearing high mount with external wastegate,

hks stainless exhuast manifold,

3 " full stainless and mandrel bent exhaust,

hks 280 deg cams,

z32 airflow meter,

trust intercooler,

apexi fc computer,

hks electronic boost controller,

Unsure of internals but someone has spent alot of money on this car,so i asume they're not standard.

Any info would be appriciated.

I have similair setup and have kept it to 1.2bar as i am unsure also of my internals. If it is tuned well at the 1.4 bar in australia you may as well leave it at that but if it hasn't been tuned yet in aus i would be turning it way down until u get the af ratios checked or get it dyno tuned. Heaps of places in bris can tune power fc. I would recommend taking it to a guy called Gavin Wood who is at labrador (he really knows his $hit and has built a lot of big dollar gtr's with excellent results), can't remember his business name but if you want it just pm me.

If it hasnt been tuned in Australia then the boost should definately go down, Japanese usually tune their cars for higher octane fuel then our pissy 98 ron, They have 100+ ron standard. So 1.4 bar on our fuel may be a little high, if you dont want to turn down the boost, maybe use a octane booster,

Lucky you live in queensland, you wouldnt be able to get it registered in SA.

Have you got a hand controller? If so you can monitor knock, plus set the check engine light to flash if it detects knock.

Do you know what size turbine AR? I have just changed my 3037 to 0.87 up from a 0.61 and I am wondering what to expect WRT lag.

When do you start making boost, also when does boost hit hard? How are you finding traction?

Hi steve,

Im in the process of getting a controller,due to a dyno run where the car richend out too much at around 4000 rpm and lost about 30-40kw.

Im not sure on turbine size but the plate on the turbo reads 30/37s56t,if thats any help.

Boost kicks in at around 2900 and peaks at around 4600 rpm.I have 265/40/17 on the rear and it has trouble getting traction from 60-90 k's when you give it heaps.

Hi, yeah the plate is the core id plate - so you know what the turbo is.

that boost seems a bit later than mine, which starts around 2400 and makes 1 bar at around 3k, I am not sure where it makes 1.2 bar, which is the highest setting I have tried, becuase I was just loosing way too much traction and it was getting a bit dangerous on the road when the back end steps out at 100kmh in traffic, that was using light throttle - sounds like you will get a taste when you pick up the 4000rpm range AF ratios.

The boost his so hard (with the 0.61) it was like using Nitrous, the torque and power lines were almost vertical at that point on the dyno. It was just plane crazy.

:( son of rajab no! Dont use a octane booster. In around 500km, you car will be splattering and doing all sorts of things. All my mechanics strongly advised against doing this as it fowls up the plugs in no time.

When is the turbo going on? Looks like mine will be good to go at the end of the week, hopefully tuned the week after.

Was it recommended that you use the 0.82? I went the 0.87 purely because HKS sell the RB25 kit with that housing, so hopefully it will do the job nicely, fingers crossed cos the housings by themselves new are not cheap.

it will be ready by monday and then its getting the comp cover polished. It will have 0.70 A/R comp with t66 comp wheel, GT30 twin ball bearing core with 0.82 A/R exhaust with special spec exhaust wheel, all rated at 600hp. Same guy that made leewahs 493rwkw turbo is making mine and he recommended those specs for what i wanted.

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
