Hit by a wheel at a bus stop: boy fights for life

A 10-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a wheel spun off a passing car and hit him at a bus stop in Sydney's north yesterday.

Police said the wheel came off a white Nissan Skyline travelling south on Lane Cove Road at North Ryde about 3.45pm.

It spun into the boy, who was standing at a bus stop on the side of the road, badly injuring his head, stomach and ankles.

Paramedics treated the boy on the side of the road before taking him to Westmead Children's Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition overnight.

Police seized the Skyline for mechanical examination and tested the driver, a 33-year-old Yagoona man, for drugs and alcohol.

Lane Cove Road was closed for about four hours while crash investigation officers investigated the site.

Police want to speak with anyone who might have seen the incident and has not yet spoken with police. Witnesses should call the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit on 9689 7370 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Went past it yesterday on the way home. Was on Lane Cove road south bound. Looked like a fairly stockish R34. Was pretty much all but over when i got there. couldn't figure out why the car was leaning in the front left hand corner, why pretty much lanes all around the intersection where blocked off, until i heard later on the radio what had happened.

The boy apparantly was just walking along the footpath and the wheel had just come off and hit the kid.

Hope he's ok!!!

I think i must of went past just before this happened. Cos i was on Lane Cove Road.

Tinz..just because you have a "white" skyline. Doesn't mean your car will be affected.

He may have had loose wheel nuts. He may have had bad wheel studs that sheared off. Who knows

sounds more like a freak accident to me. whether the cars a nissan skyline or a holden commodore it makes no difference its not the build quality of the car sounds to be someone played a prank/sabotage on the driver by deliberately loosening hes wheel nuts.

wheels dont just come off cars

Jeez i hope that kids ok, i heard he was airlifted to hospital. i was stuck in some serious traffic at gordon triying to get home:(

never heard of a wheel just coming off before....sounds dodgy? how could you forget to tighten your nuts when changing wheels/tyrs.

back in the early 90's i had a wheel come off my capella. It was the most terrifying moment watching the wheel bounce off down the road. Luckily for me there was no people in the way, but there was a car park full of cars.... and the wheel was bouncing high, i though oh god, its going to hit 5 or more cars here .... but thank god it hit a sign a business had put out on the footpath ! I was able to retrieve and using a scissor jack, got car off ground and bolts wheel back on (there was 2 wheel studs still in wheel), and drive it off the road until a flatbed came.

It was a case of putting nuts on , but forgetting to tighten them. Ever since i've been fastidious about tripple checking them.

I remember 5-8 years ago a woman in Brisbane just dropped her child off to daycare and walked out going back to car, and a trucks outer bogie wheel broke off and bounced over and hit her. She died instantly. So bloddy sad.....

So, eveyone double, tripple check you nuts !

Spot on.

Just a freak accident..

Hopefully the guy didnt come from a tyre shop where i live (on the central coast).

Has been atleast 3 different people go there for wheel alignments/new tyres etc and then the wheel(s) have "fallen" off in a matter of kilometers later..

:( Oh my gosh!!!! I hope he's going to be ok.

I had 2 wheel nuts just snap off my 32. I didn't even know till i got my new tyred and my mate showed me :P

Thank goodness, i got it fixed the same day...

or maybe it was running some generic cheap-ass wheels with a dopey +60mm FWD offset or similar, and then they were spaced out with some plates to get them to sit right. who knows

too many dodgy mods on 'Lines these days

wheels dont just come off cars

Correct. Wheels don't just come off cars.

Off the top of my head, I can think of / heard about / seen:

* The wheels were changed and the nuts weren't put on properly

* The wheel is fitted improperly so the back of the wheel's hub doesn't have a full contact with the brake hub and the load on the wheel studs is uneven

* People buy shit wheels, which have warped, that apply uneven loads to the studs

* You run spacers with stock wheel studs, and the nuts can't get a good purchase on them

* You run spacers with shit studs (stock or weak lengthened ones), and the load finally sheared them

* You don't maintain it and your wheel bearing packs it in

Negligent maintenance and ignorant modifications aren't "freak accidents", and are just as possible as someone maliciously going to find a wheel brace that fits this person's car and then using it to loosen the wheel.

sounds more like a freak accident to me.

...

Out of curiosity, how is a person intentionally loosening the wheel nuts on a car that is going to be driven afterwards a "freak accident" rather than an intentional act?

which tyre shop are you talking about... im from the coast too and would be good to warn people about this dodgey place

I hate whenthis sort of accidents happens to Skylines. We are all judged and a Skyline in my opinion is a much safer car than a Dihatsu. Why is nto a Dihatsu on the news? DAMNNNNNNNNN

Eug.

If it did it probably wouldnt end up on the news anyway because its a Daihatsu... "Nissan Skylines" on the hand would make it sound like it was 'hooning' at the time and the wheel came off and hit a kid therefore re-enforcing the media's other hoon-related articles - the more the word "Nissan Skyline" is mentioned in the media the more easily people recognize it and associate with the word 'hoons' and 'death'.
