just get a evo?

I'd have to agree. It's hard to beat an Evo on the track. They're just so easy to drive fast. Plus if you have no interest in registering it you could buy a race only import for cheaper than the local ones. You can pretty much throw a cage in them, chuck some decent pads and semi's on and be fast.

If I decide to sell the GTR and get another track car it'd probably be an Evo9.

An EVO of some sort is top of the list for my next track car after the MX5 racer.

Either that or a Clubman style kit car.

Matt - the difference in that also - would be lap times!

Brad is down to 1:05s IIRC and other street GTR's Ive seen are around the 1:12's @ wakie

In saying that though - you'd still have fun in a street GTR round a track - hell any car really!

My MX5 certainly isnt going to set any world records, but Im having fun in it and in my class in the inter club championship, its quite competitive while being raced on a very strict and limited budget!

I agree with the EVO9 being the go.

Warren Weldon's Evo0 RS has rally rego and is quick enough to give us a run when im having an off day still.

He throws a set of yoki slicks on and away it goes all day roundy round.

I've always got set-up dramas and the car can be very inconsistant depending on the tires etc.

When its fast its really fast but the other times it can be so painful trying to make it quick when its not.

I remember a day at oran park not so long ago. 400Kw plus and was struggling to get it under the 50second barrier. It was a real handfull to drive.

Took it home pulled everything out and started with fresh springs, allignment and everything else, next weekend on the same tires it was in the mid 40's with ease.

Same thing happended at wakey over easter. I dropped a solid 2 seconds throughout the day whilst changing springs, sway bars and allignement.

Problem is at the end of the day when its finally competative its too late and the racing is all over with.

I dont see the problem with street GTRs being modded for track use.

Jess' car was an awesome example. I put that thing around GP in a 1:20 flat and it was a road car with full interior. It did a high 9 around wakfield as well.

You just have to be careful with them and know when your treading the fine line between a running engine and a molten pile of shit between the shock towers.

On a side note my GTR has gotten slightly more expensive, Im fitting electric powersteering pump/water pump, new turbos, piping and re-doing some suspension.

See it never ends and the wallet never closes.

buy an r32 gtst for 7-9k with some mods already (eg FMIC, exhaust, some suspension mods, more boost) - put a half cage, semi slicks, brake upgrade (pads and braided lines and pads) and a bucket seat - I think a total of 15k for a basic package would certainly be fun!!!

I reckon thats a great Idea, and I heard you can dip down into the 10's at wakie with semi's :)

What are you looking for, an all out time attack car, club circuit car or track pig. Just remember you don't have to be the fastest car of the day to have fun, I reckon an MX5, RenaultSport Clio or even a locost clubman (which could have the ability to be fastest car) would be great, low maintenance track cars.

One more thing, don't right off the rb20 in GTS-T's, they are a good motor and are good for a track friendly160-170rwkw up to 230-250rwkw

I'm interested in lowering lap times as much as anyone else, but on the track I'm primarily there for fun. That is why I don't see an issue with my idea of a stocker GT-R with brakes, seat, harness, suspension and perhaps a cage as a track car. In my head (only in my head :) ) a standard GT-R will be more reliable than a modded GTS-t of similar performance.

Yes... it would seem I would have a very short and uneventful build up thread :)

My GTR was the most reliable one I have seen..only broke something when Brad drove it LOL but wasn't anything major.. the R32 GTR are a 20year old car so have to expect things to be a bit worn...

I did everything in that GTR too skidpan days, Hillclimbs, Superprints..Drove it daily for awhile too and a 3 day non stop event called Dutton Rally..the GTR never missed a beat and I hope my next one will be just as good.. like Brad is saying mine was only midly moded running around 280kws and that was doing good times and loads of fun..

It's the luck of the draw with a GTR :P but thats half the fun! :)

I love my GTR and really enjoy giving it a bit of a squirt on the track. BUT it's always in the back of my mind, to take it easy in case something happens.

That's why I've pretty much decided to do a non registered S13 track car.

Simply an SR20, strip absolutely everything out of it. Decent suspension and brakes and away we go. The way i see it, selling off all the interior should pay for close to half the car so it should work out less than $10k when all is said and done.

haha, Yeah the N1 definitely stays with me Chubbs. Once i do the Silvia if anything it will be going to 100% stock. Stereo out, stock exhaust back on, remove the Brembo's, standard 32 wheels etc etc.

My sisters boyfriend is a big Silvia fan and wanted a drift car, but he's done a drift day and got bored after a few hours so I've convinced him to do a track car together. Just waiting for them to move into their new place so we have garage space and then it's go.

It'll be the definition of a track pig, no door trims no nothing. We will probably lean towards ripping out the dash and all, and have nothing but a tacho and a couple of warning gauges. The plan is to do supersprints and club trackdays for now. Running gear will be pretty much stock, and the focus will be brakes and suspension.

Its looking really good now though, finally to a point mechanically where im happy with it. Still want to change the sump design but other wise its getting there.

A street GTR will be fine if its built right to begin with. Once you start chasing a second here and a second there it starts costing. They your after half a second here and there it costs more, tehn your looking at a few tenths and its getting really expensive.

    • Adjusting the idle screw is usually (emphasis on usually) just covering up deeper issues. Stuff like the cold start valve not closing properly. Throttle shaft seals on the way out. Coolant temp sensors getting out of spec. Coolant temp sensors especially can be a bear to diagnose because they can fail subtly. My dad just spent weeks chasing down his high idle. He cleaned the coolant temp sensor and everything but the resistance curve just drifts over time and if it's been 20+ years they also get super slow to respond as well. Has a massive effect on fuel economy as if it's off the ECU is going to run richer and command high idle for far longer than it should otherwise.
    • How old is the battery, it's more likely your battery is on its way out.
    • I reckon you'd get 90% off. My washer doesn't get between spokes very well. Haha! I love my Gerni!  Argh! Steam cleaning has its place for sure.
    • Hey all, I did a voltage test with the car (video attached) not running for 3 days. And here is some interesting stuff: - Battery voltage is 12v (I had the key in the ON position) - Drops to 9.76v while cranking then quickly goes up to 14.5v - You will notice there was a sorta slow start but not as slow as it usually is. - Idle surprisingly was better at just over 1,000rpm instead of 1,100 rpm. - I turned on the A/C, radio and headlights in the video and the voltage remains the same - I haven't cleaned the grounding wires on the chassis yet, that's next. - Battery drops to 12.6v when I turn off the car and wait a bit Seems like I might have a parasitic draw? I do have an immobiliser system which does drain the battery more of course but was wondering if there is anything else I should be looking at fixing? Does the ground wires on the chassis have anything to do with the low 12v?        SAU.avi
    • My lord that is some low oil pressure as minimum in the manual! I guess the big part will be seeing how it changes as the engine gets more spirited use.
