hi

basically, I have the option to buy a N/A auto 4wd R33 for very cheap ($4k or there abouts) and the main issue for me is, how hard would it be to convert it to manual? I realise there are plenty of threads on how to do it and this isnt so much the problem.

Main problem is which box to use, Ideally would use manual box from another 4wd R33 (maybe R32 gts4 box, depending on strength?)but unsure of strength? how much roughly in whp are these things capable of handling? are they similiar in strength to the turbo boxes?

another thought is RB25det box but im guessing you cant wack the transfer case from the auto onto that (doh)

Also there is the option of a GTR box out of an R32, what would be required to get this to work? ie changing input shafts etc?

sorry bout it bein kinda long hehe

any help would be much appreciated =)

The R32 GTS4 box should be more than adequate. I have a RB25DET in my 32, pushing 180 kW out through all 4 wheels, and the gearbox is fine.

Thanks for that, so basically the GTS4 box bolts pretty much straight up? The long term aim is for around 500whp so in the long run a GTR box would probably be required... would it be possible to simply swap the input shafts from the GTS4 box? or would they too not be strong enough?

Well, the RB25 bolted straight up to the 32's gearbox. Pretty much any gearbox that bolts to a particular RB-series engine should bolt straight up to any other RB-series engine.

My experience has been that Nissan gearboxes, in general, are pretty well bulletproof. I had a 180B SSS, worked - it was my road / race / rally car. In 300k, only problems were a bit of wear in the main selector rod, and a munched 1st gear layshaft bearing.

You may actually need the R33 GT-R / GTS4 box, because the ATTESSA works slightly differently to the 32s.

i see, thank you very much.

    • Last year I got a set of MCA street coilovers for my turbo Forester after my son hitting a concrete gutter/wall on a small bridge causing the whole drivers side suspension to get bent because the rain just made the car slide out I love them, I think they were $2400. even had a hiccup of have the wrong hub configuration (my fault) so got onto MCA and they sent the correct shock ends overnight parts from QLD, for free!  I was very impressed with their customer service and quality of the product
    • They've had some weird failures on their brake actuators. One of them was because they added some kind of lubricant to the factory fill brake fluid that aftermarket brake fluid didn't have so it would affect the seals. Another was just mysterious, probably internal corrosion or something eating away at Prius brake actuators. Parts alone for those are a few thousand USD so not a cheap fix.

    • KYBs are typically twin tube, putting them in the lower tier of desireability. Do you just want to replace worn out ones for the lowest cost? I mean, you wouldn't just replace one end of a car, if the rears are a similar age to the fronts, then they are probably nowhere near what they should be, and likely won't be great against brand new fronts. So, to spend ~$800 on 2nd tier dampers, when you could get a decent set of MCA coilovers for <$4k.....? As to the strut tops. 1st up, the Sparesbox site specifically tells you that they are not correct for an R33. Beyond that, why do you think you need them?
    • That's not very Toyota of the Toyota!
