Cold Air Intake.

Basically the factory air box with panel filter is removed and replaced with a pod filter. An enclosure is made for the pod filter to shield it from heat and reduce heatsoak. To get the most out of it a cold air feed usually from the front bar runs up into the air box.

The result is a high flowing air filter that gets fresh cold air which assists in making more power.

There are short ram air filters where the pod filter itself is positioned low behind the front bar and cold air is rammed into the pod, but the issue with this is the potential to suck up water during wet weather.

How effective are these are making power? It was my understanding that a stand alone pod is probably worse than the stock airbox in our climate. As such I've been trying to source a stock box for my Supra. I'd considered making a heatshield, but figured the gain would be minimal, especially on a non turbo.

Does the actual intake pipe help much? What sort of gains can be expected, like 5kw?

I left my airbox in my R34 N/A and just took the top off it, so the air comes in normally and comes out through the airbox into my pod filter and the difference is fairly noticeable.

On an N/A the power gains are had through relieving restrictions. Getting cooler air into the engine efficiently, and exhaust gasses back out just as efficiently, finding the best compromise between top end power, and low end response. As such it takes a lot of modifications to get any decent power, but in the end every bit counts, just don't expect a huge gain just from a high flowing filter and cold air feed unless you combine it with other breathing mods, or unless of course if your current air filter is badly clogged and soaking up plenty of hot air that changing a filter alone will make a difference.

In a lot of cases a factory air box with high flow panel will be more beneficial than an unshielded pod.

What I've known some people do as well is run a cold air feed into the factory air box. Basically you get the benefits of a high flow filter, cold air, and OEM box designed to keep hot air out, and it's going to be well sealed in comparison to aftermarket/custom heat shields.

As for the intake pipe, if you experience high engine bay temps, then yeah a cold air feed to the filter will definitely help. Cooler air = higher density = more air in the engine = more power.

It may not be a HUGE amount more power, but if you compare that to say an unshielded pod, when the engine bay heats up and the pod filter sucks in hot air and has less power, the filter shielded from hot air that is also taking in cooler air from outside will be making more power in comparison and for longer.

I'm not sure how well the Supra factory airbox/snorkel flows, but if it's anything compared to say an R34, then a factory airbox and high flow panel is certainly a better way to go, unless you like to spend the time/dollars on a good CAI setup just to have a nice induction sound...

Jack's idea isn't too bad actually.. on the R34 the snorkel feeds air from the opening in the bonnet and is a fairly decent size. Even if there's a bit of heat soak it won't be so bad with the cold air running to the underside of the pod.

I wouldn't mind seeing a photo of that setup, mainly to see if it would be feasible to have a heat shield on the pod, one of the metal types that covers the top side of the pod and leaves the underside open. Not sure how good that would look though but at least it would minimise the heat being taken in and encourage suction from the cooler side of the pod.

Another set up that I've seen utilise the factory snorkel in combination with the pod filter is here: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/In...od+filter+setup

go down to your local plumbing joint recee or purple pig etc etc and ask them for heat resistant and bend into shape stuff

i got 2.25'' piping from from purple pig for $18 only needed about half but they only sell buy the metre

I'll get a pic for you, but it was the easiest way I thought, instead of getting induction piping and all that. I'd rather a heat sheald on it, but what can I make it out of? or where can I buy one?

you can buy el cheapo shiny plastic stuff from supercheap / autobarn that dont do jack

or go to bunnings and get a sheet of metal ($3-8) and make your on enclosure

    • Yes...but look at the numbers. There is a tiny tiny fraction of the number of Joules available, compared to what is used/needed. Just because things are "possible" doesn't make them meaningful.
    • Thanks for taking the time to post that ! If anything changes or happens please do update us.
    • Somehow Vertimass/Oak Ridge National Labs has figured out a catalyst that can convert ethanol into C9-C10 hydrocarbons in basically a single step without ending up with a bunch of ethylene or similar waste products: https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2023224867A1/en I still don't think anything like this will keep us from needing to transition to EVs regardless along with all kinds of other electrification, but things like this will go a long way towards alleviating the problem of how to electrify things like planes. Renewable diesel is seemingly an easier problem as well, Chevron is already running refineries for the stuff and the primary feedstock is tallow and other waste fats from agriculture.
    • Ok so I have sorted everything with my uniclutch and  i can offer up a bit of feedback and some things that might help others.    I found problems with factory damper line. Weird shit and had trouble with peddle adjustment    I used this https://au.gktech.com/products/r33-gts-t-skyline-braided-clutch-line?_pos=2&_sid=22b01b9b9&_ss=r Also when adjusting peddle leave a bit of play. You can get into a over stroke condition easy.. Make sure you can push the slave forward after adjusting to confirm fluid can return to master then you will need to pump it up heaps…..not sure why but that’s how it is.    last thing the splined adapter is machined perfectly. If your input shaft is old like mine was I would put a bit of valve grinding paste on it and stroke it like a 15 year old. Just to give it a tad more clearance and to better match it to the spline.    reason is on a near flat shift I have had situation where the peddle returns a millisecond after you lift from the clutch. No slip or anything but I reckon this is due to tolerance on the spline being way tighter than stock clutch and binding for a sec. I think this will go away but also my spline was old. Box is old so I guess I should have checked better. It’s a super neat fit.    it feels light as and holds awesome without any noise
