Hi all, It is my future plan to purchase an R32 GTR and was wondering what you could tell me about them when looking around to buy one, what to look out for etc.

I currently Drive a Ford XR6 Turbo, yeah its a bucket and doesnt handle like a formula one car but it goes hard and looks ok.

Some questions.

I have seen how an old M3 can cost 10k for a major service inc GearBox and was wondering how R32 GTR's compare to a normal car when it comes to maintenance/servicing.

Should I look to spend 30+ and get one thats had upgraded turbo/s and N1 bits etc or go for a Clean Low KM stocko for under 20k.

To turn a stocker into a reliable weapon but not crazy are you talking big $$?

How many KM's is high for a GTR?

Drivability? Around town etc

I know I could spend hours on here searching for my answers and I will do that but it would be great if you could answer my questions while I am looking. :)

Try to figure out what you want it for( ie track days, dragin or just crusing ) and what you want to do to it and find one done or close enough, there are some in the whole cars for sale section.

As for kms depends on car and how its been maintained and what mods its got, i personally think 100000km is cut off when buying an r32 and the more mods its got and the more power it makes the lower km.

Depends on what you call a weapon my car only has about $10000 worth of bolt on mods and it has run back to back 11.36s @ 125mph :)

Hey Mate, just bought mine (2 weeks ago) I bought onw which is a bit rough paint wise but seems mechanically good, apart from a button clutch it is a brilliant car day to day, mine will not be a daily but until the reality of the fuel costs set in it is. The things to look for have been covered but in summary: (happy to be corrected)

*paint on the Plenum peels when car gets flogged

*Never trust an odometer...

*Rust in the back of the rear wheel arches and bottom of the rear screen

*Trim around rear windows is pretty much impossible to get right after repairs

*Leatherette on gear and H/brake boot cracking (100000k plus)

*Pedal pads worn (100000k plus)

*Noisy Turbos

*Silicon around the panel joins at strut towers etc

*Compression test 5 and 6 are the problem Children here, if all 6 are consistent then that is a good indication of the motors condition

This is by no means comprehensive but hope it helps, Spend money to get a car that is mechanically good, Expect to spend whatever you save (X2) repairing a cheap car within the first year

It would be a toy...daily driver at times possibly (Only a few KM's) ..... No to any track work .... Possible 1/4 Mile just to see how it goes and for the experience (Rarely if at all) .

I was also thinking less than 100,000kms and a mid 12 sec would be enough

Cheers :) Ideally I would love a Standard GTR with Low KM's <70k with A1 Paint. I would rather redo an interior than the Paint.

Maybe N1 Turbos which seems to be popular? And N1 vents on front I love. I have seen a few with Low Kms and only small mods like exhaust etc that look nice.

What do you think about the difference (Long term) about a 20k GTR compared to a 35K GTR?

An R32 GTR will cost more than a 'normal' car to service as you have to do oil every 5,000km and some parts if you buy new can be a bit expensive. But nothing like $10k for a major service. Euro cars are the ones to worry about for that.

I think a mid point would be better, but bare in mind that there are some really bad examples around that are ticking time bombs and an engine rebuild is NOT cheap.

Not an easy one to answer as 'weapon' can mean different things to different people. If you were to get a rebuild, forged internals, gt-ss turbo's, ecu, fuel pump, injectors, etc I would say about $15k would make a pretty reliable and very powerful gtr (around the 320awkw mark).

How many KM's is high for a GTR?

Most have been wound back, so the number in the dial is not a good guide. Asses the car based on wear and tear inside i.e, steering wheel and gear knob, seats etc (if these parts are stock...) and more importantly if you find one you think looks good, get a mechanic to inspect it including a compression test before you buy it!

Well generally they will have lowered suspension, exhaust etc so they are not really a car for around town in my opinion. They have a pretty shocking turning circle and if you are anything like me, there are plenty of places you won't park it. While mine is a 'daily' I don't always have to drive for work and for times I don't want to use it I have small economical cars i can borrow :P

Hope that helps answering those questions. My only other advise is that you may have to be patient to find the right one as there are quite a few out there and the prices range from dirt cheap to quite expensive. In general you get what you pay for... but either way make sure you get it checked! Otherwise you may find out the hard way that a cheap GTR is anything but.
