Thanks Femno and Miran for heads up about the turbos. Contacted Access Autoworks, but no stock. As for the HKS 2530s, tempting as they are, they are over my budget. I am chasing some from The States - ATP turbos. They have on shelf ready to be shipped.

turbo rxp:

Why V Cam, dash 5 and RB28? That is the question I ask myself sometimes. I sometimes wondered why I didn't just put the money aside and just get a R35 GTR instead. I guess I am a RB enthusiast and just want to get the most street drivability out of this engine platform as possible. I want to emphasize on the low end torque and response, rather than high end power.

with these cam choise it will be responsive , i have done the same set up with out the vct unit and its great , i used the Super GT turbines from garrett , pretty much the same as yours , just a little more top end ,

Time frame is entirely dependent on Ben! I dare not to rush him. But I am hoping probably early July completion date. I ill sure keep everyone posted.

Yeah sweet!

Early July is not that far away.

Do post some progress and completion pics!

Thanks.

Your lucky matt...my build started late Nov last year and still counting. I'm looking at getting the head back by 10th july and least then things will start happening.

Bottom end has been sitting and waiting at least 2 months now.

How did you go sourcing the turbos from the States??

I will certainly get some progress pics up as soon as I visit Racepace workshop. Early July is a distant hope, realistically i am looking at end of July or early August even though I started sourcing all the main components early March this year. My importer managed to snap up one of only two remaining HKS Step 2 2.8 stroker kits in stock in the whole of Japan at that time. Backorder for these kits is indefinite as HKS will only build a batch at a time.

I did not anticipate the turbos to be on backorder for so long. Apparently the -5s have been selling like hot cakes for some reason lately.

As for ordering from The States, they are available but at a price hike of $500 above Aussie pricing due to exchange, freight etc. and that is excluding possible taxes.

I have learnt to be patient with project cars, progress is always slower than expected.

After the engine, I would like to focus on wheels, interior and finally subtle changes to the exterior.

What to they say..patience is a virtue..well more like a pain in the arse...

I got my kit thru HKS here in Jappa no probs, N1 block was easy as to get as Nismo shop is 10mins down the road but my head ..oh ..my head has taken so long.

All maching is being done by Naprec here and its been like getting a tooth pulled but got the word today it will be delivered back to HKS by 10th July and then finally it should be all go.

I've got turbos on order so just gotta keep patient.

Gunna be real interesting to see how the V Cam all turns out. I reckon you will be pretty happy with the response.

What gearbox are you putting behind it??

Hey Mark,

I am putting Nismo Supercopper Twin plate clutch with standard gearbox.

So, is your car being built here or in Japan?

As for turbos, I just ordered them from The States (Frsport) and they guaranteed that they do have them in stock ready to be shipped. I decided to pay a two hundred dollars more rather than wait for back order from Garrett Australia, as last heard the back order took over 2-3 months to fill.

Cheers

Matt

In Japan by HKS. , I live here in Japan.

heres link to build so far ..http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Hks-Japan-28-Engine-Buil-t246240.html&hl=hks+2.8+build

Not much going on but some suspension work being done later this week.

I'm running Nismo Twin Coppermix (sweet to drive) but upgrading to SUPER COPPERMIX TWIN Competition Model 544 Kw clutch as will be maxing power output of the regular twin.

Going a Auto Gallerey Yokohama 690 gear upgrade.

I hope turbos wont be that long, waiting on update for delivery but wont be suprised if they take forever!

  • 5 weeks later...
just a question i havnt read all the posts , but why a V cam with dash 5 turbos with the 2.8 L

Personally having driven a RB26's with dash 5's and a RB26 with GTSS turbos I concluded that for the ultimate power delivery and response GTSS are the best turbo for 2.6ltr and dash 5's are more suited to 2.8ltr. I belive this to be true from back to back testing in the Dutton rallies where the benifits of the top end power of the dash 5's has not overweighed its lack of response and the GTss have had a consistant advantage. Add V cam to the 2.8 as well and it would be amazing. I would expect the most exlirating 420kw around. It would feel like a porsche turbo on red bull.

Good luck with it all and if you ever want to sell it give me a yell.

  • 1 month later...
Just getting some hiccups sorted, should have car ready end of September if all goes according to plan. I will start new thread in project section soon.

Saw it yesterday. Looks the goods. What dumps are they?

goes to show how long ive been off the forum. i only just found this! if i had the money this is exactly what i would have done but i just couldnt afford it. i still got the 2.8L but i had to keep the GT-SS's that i already had. they are too small for my liking. id really love to see the end result of this. actually, id love a ride in the end result! I may consider doing the vcam later on down the track...

Best of luck!

Ron

Thanks Ron!

I originally wanted to go for a RB30, either a RIPS or OSG complete bottom end. However, Racepace convinced me to stock with 2.8L as the 3.0L bottom end requires a lot other minor mods for fitment in engine bay as the increased stroke means that the engine will sit some 35-50mm higher.

The Garrett -5s certainly give good peak power. Benno would not increase peak boost over 1.5 bar, for the sake of engine safety. I am not ready to sacrifice engine durability over top end power gain.

The V Cam, RB28 and Garrett -5s combo is good, but its still no Racepace Rb29 engine. The Racepace R33 GTR still walks all over my car (I know because I have driven both cars!)

Yeah but Benno cheated :) Spaced block for the win!

    • No worries, everything worked out in the end. I just wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter where it comes from (I.E Australia), it can be broken or improperly built. I would still purchase from these companies in the future. B2R - Not certain how that finished, this was on a car I wired a few things and street tuned. I know the owner ended up shipping the motor back to Australia for investigation. Hopefully some of it is covered under warranty.  Turbosmart - I always pressure test everything that goes on my car. It's a habit from my career in oil and gas. I run two 40mm's and both had major leaks from the actuator to exhaust portion through the shaft. I returned both, they shipped me back two and one was leaking and the other had a 38mm top (40mm gate with 38mm actuator cap, no idea how that happens). Eventually after a lot of back and forth I found myself with two non-leaking gates. I believe this happens a lot more then people would like to believe but you would never know if you don't pressure test them prior to installation. Crank Motorsport - Issued a full refund and let me keep the seat rails. I turned them into scrap metal for other projects. GKTech - Shipped me out a replacement and asked that I modify it as per my idea and that they would do the same for a future revision. ATP - Can just needed a large shim to bolt up properly.  Haltech - They started an actual proper Beta channel for firmware's a few months back and stopped using the general public for testing. I'm now much happier.  Speedtek - f**k Speedtek. I would love to watch them burn.
    • I've got a Turbosmart wastegate, ATP catch can, many GK Tech parts and Haltech everything. Everything's been perfect, sorry to hear your experience wasn't the same
    • The only high-power RB I've personally seen go pop after running for all of an hour on a dyno was built by B2R, while being remotely tuned by B2R. The only wastegates I've ever had leak like a sieve, return, still leak, return and get shipped back the wrong ones were from Turbosmart. The only final drive that I've ever purchased that were unusable, twice... were from Speedtek. The only seat mounts that I've ever purchased that placed the seats in the door frame were from Crank Motorsport. The only poorly designed parts that I had the manufacturer confirm should have been designed as per what I mentioned were from GKTech. The only ECU I've had firmware updates consistently break things are Haltech. The only catch can I've purchased that didn't fit in its advertised spot was from ATP. So forth and so on... Moral of the story, doesn't matter where it's from. Do your research beforehand and stick with products and companies you've trusted in the past.    @joshuaho96 If you want it done right, do it yourself.
    • Something coarse-ish. 180 is good.
    • I was surprised to see all the quick Jack models at the same prices on there. But yeah, grabbing one at 20% off would be great.
