How many people are running them with Power FC in oz??

I'm only going on what they are saying here but hey the japs have tunnel vision but the only thing I would say is my mate who is head Tuner at HKS here reckons it will be a pain in the arse. Reckons the HKS Vcam programming wont run smoothly with another brand head unit...

He definitely isnt true to HKS when it comes to peformance as always recommends whatever brand product is best to use...

Anyway I'm interested to see how this all pans out cause if its sweet I'll get the V cam thrown in before I head back to Oz..

i cant see why a box couldnt be made to drive this unit or a home made version of it...im not familiar on how it works but assume its a pressure control valve that regulates oil pressure to the actuator....we have built a quite a few devices doing the same sort of thing for our motorbikes and cars here at work...If there is a problem i cant see it being a major one

I must admit Ben is like an eccentric craftsman (no offfence to him). He has good enough reputation for him to be selective with his clientele. And no he did not shake his head when I approached him with the job. Its for other reasons which will come into light in the near future.

As for turbos, I can't get hold of any Garrett-5 as they are on back order world wide. I am considering a set of HKS 2530s or Tomei ARMS B7660 now. But just for the HKS or Tomei brand will cost twice as much as the Garretts off the shelf. :D

Seeing Benno tomorrow

Those Tomei turbos look tempting hey... very nice bit of gear... but still no where near the bang for buck of the -5's... good luck with your search, there were some for sale in the classified section on here a few weeks back but were second hand

sooo has he started ripping apart the silver GTR yet? tell him to get on with it! :D:P

The VCam is a separte configurable unit to the ECU isnt it?

If this is the case - then it doesn't matter one iota what ECU you choose.

Honestly... I dont know...Just going off what HKS tuners are saying.

All I know there is a guy in WA running the Power PC and is having issues sorting it out and also the poms have had dramas..

I'll be out there next week so will ask..

any updates Matt

Matt!

Check out the for sale section, Trent from Mercury has just posted up a set of new HKS2530s!

I had the same problem 2 years ago, trying to get a set of -5s. I cant believe theyre still hard to get!

I think I saw a new set on ebay a week or two ago as well!

Elrodeo666:

ECU will be Apexi Power FC.

I had the same concern regarding integrating the V Cam with another ECU unit. I contemplated buying the HKS F Con Pro V, but they are only available through the authorised HKS dealer in NSW and that the tuning must be done at their facilities. The price I got quoted for supply and tune was exorbitant to say the least. However, that is a last resort option if things don't work out as planned.

What is in my favour is the expertise, knowledge, experience and technical know-how of Ben from Racepace. Don't forget guys that he managed to build his Racepace RB2.9 demo car with variable cam from a RB25 head through his own in house R&D. As far as I know that engine has not missed a beat even after numerous targa events by the previous owner.

Ben assures me he is confiednt to get the Power FC to work with the V Cam as essentially the V Cam will act like a 'piggy back' computer. I did point out that particular case in WA where the guy is having problems with his set-up.

I hope all will proceed according to plans.

As for the build, it is progressing very S---L---O---W---L---Y. N1 block is back at Racepace honed and bored to specs. Expected finish date will have to be delayed until I can get hold of some Garrett -5s. I am sourcing from The States now.

Forged; H-beam; held together by ARP bolts

I heard that these parts are actually fabricated by Cosworth UK to HKS specs and then rebadged and packaged in Japan for a premium price. Regardless the HKS badge is cool!

Nope... BBS LM's and Harrops... its probably sitting out the back in the rain lol

getting a rebuild... damaged bearings so just waiting to find out what's salvageable as its a previously built motor

I would look at those 2530's Femno is talking about if I were you... they would be lethal on your motor!

those pics of the bottom end look damn nice... I feel naughty just looking at the pictures

Yes can't wait to see how this turns out, VCT is black magic to me - is the timing adjusted on the fly through a mechanism inside the cam gear? Seriously - I have looked at the photos and I can't work out how on earth that thing works!!

... suspense .. killing

They have been massively busy in there lately but worth waiting for and being patient with - know you will get a good result. Also sorry didn't mean any offence if taken, just thought maybe he didn't think it was the best idea - tends not to steer you in wrong directions.

Hey Matt,

Dont know if you are still after those -5 turbos, but Access Autoworks who I believe is a trader on this forum is selling a pair on ebay.

Here is a link, and he's located in Melbourne.

    • Yes...but look at the numbers. There is a tiny tiny fraction of the number of Joules available, compared to what is used/needed. Just because things are "possible" doesn't make them meaningful.
    • Thanks for taking the time to post that ! If anything changes or happens please do update us.
    • Somehow Vertimass/Oak Ridge National Labs has figured out a catalyst that can convert ethanol into C9-C10 hydrocarbons in basically a single step without ending up with a bunch of ethylene or similar waste products: https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2023224867A1/en I still don't think anything like this will keep us from needing to transition to EVs regardless along with all kinds of other electrification, but things like this will go a long way towards alleviating the problem of how to electrify things like planes. Renewable diesel is seemingly an easier problem as well, Chevron is already running refineries for the stuff and the primary feedstock is tallow and other waste fats from agriculture.
    • Ok so I have sorted everything with my uniclutch and  i can offer up a bit of feedback and some things that might help others.    I found problems with factory damper line. Weird shit and had trouble with peddle adjustment    I used this https://au.gktech.com/products/r33-gts-t-skyline-braided-clutch-line?_pos=2&_sid=22b01b9b9&_ss=r Also when adjusting peddle leave a bit of play. You can get into a over stroke condition easy.. Make sure you can push the slave forward after adjusting to confirm fluid can return to master then you will need to pump it up heaps…..not sure why but that’s how it is.    last thing the splined adapter is machined perfectly. If your input shaft is old like mine was I would put a bit of valve grinding paste on it and stroke it like a 15 year old. Just to give it a tad more clearance and to better match it to the spline.    reason is on a near flat shift I have had situation where the peddle returns a millisecond after you lift from the clutch. No slip or anything but I reckon this is due to tolerance on the spline being way tighter than stock clutch and binding for a sec. I think this will go away but also my spline was old. Box is old so I guess I should have checked better. It’s a super neat fit.    it feels light as and holds awesome without any noise
