I've just done a bit of looking around for a r33 skyline and I'm surprised at what people are asking for them relative to their type. For instance, most of the r33 gtst's run around 8 - 15 but the N/A's are almost in the same price range, some are even more expensive than the gtst models. Wth is going on? I know normally a car is evaluated for havin things such as turbo or n/a, transmission (manual being the more expensive), KM's, mods, etc... And the order in which i've written it is how it's normally evaluated. Well that's how at least I do it. So an example of this is a car I was lookin at for gettin as a drift car about 8months ago. Looked clean as, resprayed, turbo, had over 200kw at the wheels and was a manual... $8K. My brother bought his skyline, 4 door, turbo, manual and black (very rare combo really) for around 13k, that was 4 years ago. - Hasn't had any major problems, only starter motor had to be fixed. Now theres plenty of turbo r33's going from 8 - 15k range, but the n/a's are up there in the same price range. Is this due to all the P platers wanting them under the new laws? I know that's why I want one lol, but I'm not willing to spend 10k to get one when I could pay lets say for a same condition turbo model another 2k which gives me: Better brakes, better diff?, much better gearbox, turbo engine, and all the other nitty gritty stuff you get with the turbo model. I mean the r33 gearboxes are worth $1200 themselves.

So yeah, is it just me or is there something weird going on in the evaluation area, these days?

For the above reason's I'm wondering if I should get a r33 turbo and then drop a n/a engine in it.

That raises good questions, i have noticed this also. Could be the whole supply vs demand thing. Plenty of people wanting to get into imports but cant coz of the turbo laws surrounding p platers. Could be that more and more people are buying the non turbo variants as a safe choice in the fact that they are less likely to have been tharshed, or even make money, by buying the models cheap and transplanting turbo spec bits and selling it for profit.

What you have said is almost gonna make sense these days for p platers, by buying turbo skylines and tranplanting a $700ish non turbo engine into it and then either selling the turbo engine off or keeping it til you are fully licenced. So long as you do the hard yards yourself.

yep, your right the demand of P platers for legal cars is driving the prices.

Its just a simple case of supply and demand.

As for buying a turbo and dropping in a NA motor, you'd most likely still get done for it because the car would be recorded on the RTA/Vicroads etc database as a turbo.

You've answered your own question right there. I've noticed the price hike from both import dealers & private sales for N/A's especially here in VIC.

Hey Danz... Yea I bought my r33 gtst 22 months ago for 11000 (inc new tyres), it was totally stock auto. I replaced all the hoses and water pump in the engine bay, cost about 1700 for that (damn labor charges), and also had to get a new starter and indicator stick thingy n few other electrical bits (another 1k), and ended up selling about 8 months ago for only 8500. Just about noone wanted a stock auto turbo. Had it been manual, would have gotten more, and if it had been N/A would also have gotten more.

It definitely is a supply/demand thing. In this case the demand for turbo skylines went through the floor because of the P plate laws, and even more so because of auto (who wants a stock auto skyline?).

To get it back on the road you would have to run it through transport qld with roadworthies and such, the new engine number would be recorded and the rwc would state it as being now non turbo. That is if you wouldnt want to run the risk of being pulled over for that stated fact of the car being in their system as a turbo

Yeah true that, but it's not that difficult from what I've read. I just think it's all way out of proportion. I mean the turbo skylines were illegal on the old P plate laws anyway weren't they?

Curb weight around 1360kg... so therefor under the 125kw per ton law we have 1.36x125 = 170kw and the skyline makes 184kw at the flywheel. So it was clearly already illegal. Oh well. I might just put up with my r31 TI auto till I get my full license, then I'll get a r34. I'm just so sick of not having a manual, every time I get in my brothers skyline, my dads Astra or even the truck at work, it's so much more fun than not doing anything whilst driving... its so boring...

Or there's always the alternative of getting a r33 gts4 and then change the engine with the stagea rb25det I got when I get my full license... that should be fun :P

the N/A's that are going up are only the ones "most powerful" N/A's you can legally drive.

Thats because people are trying to get cars with every last drop of HP

If you are smarter, and just get a tampon taxi, you'll find their prices have not changed, or rather dropped inline with normal drops over the years

Tampon taxi? 4dr skyline? They're hard to find, my brother has a rare r33 4dr gtst manual and black in colour. Sassy...

However I prefer the 2dr as I've owned a 4dr long enough to realize that I don't need the extra rear doors (lack of friends lol).

Maybe I have a different opinion on rare because I wouldn't exactly say I never see R33 4 door manuals. There are 10 for sale on car sales at the moment and 20 for sale including autos. They pop up quite regularly in the for sale section on here as well.

hmm so the r33 2 door manual black has just been resprayed has full exhaust 17" dished rims aftermarket front bar and grill wouldnt be sold for less than 5 grand? im tryna figure out a price to offer the guy at work as hes selling his but dont wana pay too much but it sounds like it may be worth a little more?? i have done sum research on tradingpost etc but that doesnt say they are selling.

poor P platers, id say stick with what ever crap box (or nice P plate friendly ) car you have now, till your off them, then buy a turbo one, it will save you lots in the long run doing it this way, and you wont have the humiliation of being beaten by a comondoor at the lights in your pimped out blinged up auto r33 non turbo :D, ive seen it so many times its sad, then al the bogans think they can outrun any skyline......ugh i hate comondoors

by the time you get off your P's they will be cheaper too

Lol yeah I've noticed a bit of a trend of P platers buying N/A Skylines, tbqh I don't know why, because I doubt too many 18 year olds would appreciate a car which might have great brakes and suspension but be caned by a Datsun or VN at the green light grand prix!

True, but I'm being a little more specific. r33 manual, turbo, stock except for a pod filter and its BLACK. Plus I didn't realize till lookin around that his series 1 looks way better than a series 2 at the rear as the taillights sit flush. (hate tail lights that stick out, looks shit) So that's another thing that makes it quite rare. Maybe i'm wrong but I haven't found another car like it even if I was excluding it being a series 1 or 2.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do now, I was looking at buying a n/a car but since everything is out of proportion I'm thinking of getting a turbo car with a stuffed engine and dropping a n/a one in.

In terms of cost effectiveness: (cheapest / bang for buck)

Turbo car > n/a car

turbo engine < n/a engine

Bit funny isn't it...

I know this is probably the wrong section to ask this in but does anyone know how difficult it is to drop a sr20de into a 180sx when it originally had a sr20det? :P

Yeah it fits but you also need to change the ECU and ECU loom and a couple of other bits and pieces. Its all pretty much bolt up though.

I dont how you would still get fined for something you dont have?????

If you tell Vicroads you have replaced the engine, and supply them with the N/A engine number, then the car should automatically be listed as a N/A.

...this N/A thing is really crazy...next thing we know N/A's with cams and head work will be selling for more than 32 GTR's!!!!

I hope that answers the question as to why you can not do it. Also, changing the engine also means you have modified the car. Modifications are a big no-no whether they are going backwards or not.

"I dont how you would still get fined for something you dont have?????"

I have been defected and fined for having a standard air flow meter. Nuff said.
