I bought an R32 GTR 3 months ago & don’t drive it that often to give you an idea I just filled the tank this week for the 1st time since the 17 Feb when I bought it.

It was running fine up until about a month ago when it started to run at about 70% then I went away for about 3 weeks in that time the battery went flat so I charged it. Then the car was running good for a few days but this week it went bad again & is running at about 50%.

Some of the symptoms are excessive Back fire, missing, popping sounds from the engine like ping or off timing. So far I’ve checked 3 of the 6 spark plugs & it looks to be running a bit rich as you can see from the photos 1 of the plugs is really bad, much more fouled than the other 2.

I thought the problem may be due to the car sitting around for so long & being a tight arse by filling the last tank with Regular unleaded on the 17 Feb (3 months ago)

Has anyone got any ideas on what I should be looking at checking or replacing before I tow it to a tuner or someone who’s going to charge like a wounded bull to change the spark plugs or something easy like that?

I don’t think it’s a major problem so any opinions or ideas would really be appreciated.

just do the basics and try again

reset the ecu

check the plugs

put in some new fuel

check battery voltage

try unplug 02 sensors

if still no good, go see a mechanic

filling the car with regular unleaded has quite possibly f**ked your car. it should be run on 98 RON premium fuel ONLY. mate if you only do a take every 3 months then it's not like the cost is massive either. remove the shit fuel from the tank (just remove the fuel return and pump it into a jerry can using the fuel pump), and re-fill with proper fuel. buy some new BCPR7ES plugs and check the gaps (should all be 0.8mm). install them and hope for the best.

You do know petrol has a shelf life of about 30 days?

Shit petrol + OLD shit petrol = Leanout and Pinging

The ECU has probably tried to save the engine by richening everything up, that why you could have black plugs, but still cant burn the fuel because its old and shit.

Depending on how much you let it ping and backfire your 50% could be 3 cylinders broken. haha

    • Welcome.  Glad to hear that you have gained some knowledge that has helped you. I believe the only fix for the power steer belt is an electric conversion with a Holden astra pump. If you get a chance, post pics of your car, please. 🙂

    • to have this type of adjustment possible with a curve as I wish, what budget (engine) should be planned?

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
