Black Rims

hey all, just wanna ask. I have Enkie J sport rims on my car and I am interested in the look of black rims. Im thinking of getting mine painted, or if possible, swapping with someone who has black rims. I have 235/45/17's and would preferrable like the same size or wider if possible. I've seen a couple of mags do features on how to paint your rims black and all that. Do u guys think its beter to do it at home or take it to a custom painter shop? Or should I just leave it the way it is? I have attached a couple of pics of the car so u can have a look. Let me kno wat u think, cheers

I rekon they look good as is. but im not a fan of black wheels.

If you do go black i would get a shop to paint/powder coat them just in case the home job goes bad.

Ey thanks 4 the reply, yeah i like them the way they are but have been considering painting the spokes black and leavin the dish part the original color.. ive seen some cars like that and they look good

my avatar contains wheels i have painted black myself.

took me a good 2 days, that was cleaning, sanding, puttying all the gutter rash, sanding again, sanding again.... and again. primer. black spray then gloss spray.

tyres were still on wheels, just masked up. all up cost me like 50ish dollar in paints and stuff. then a bit for sandpaper and tape. definatly less than $100.

poweder coating in the end would probably be better, but would cost anywhere from $150 - $400

my coats still holding up fine also after 3 months

Hey man lookin nice,, my gf's brother is a mechanic wit a work shop and he's painted a few sets of rims black so wanted him to do it,, he knows how to do it right and knows the procedures.

Another reason I wanna do this is coz I have tracked down a single spare tyre for my car (goodbye motorcyle space saver lol) but the rim itself is white instead of the alloy colour i got on. So I wanted to paint all 5 black so they match. I like the way mine look but think they'd look so much tougher if they were painted.. anyone else got 33's with black rims they can post up here?? If there's any cars in in my colour that wud b sweet. Another SAU member, joeyjoejoejuniorshabadoo has my colour car and black rims and i think they look mint

But yeah, do it yourself. Buy some sandpaper, primer, paint, clearcoat and you're good to go. There's no point wasting money on a powder coat when you'll eventually scratch them anyway.

And don't leave the lip as is, paint the whole thing, because your wheels aren't polished metal, it will look pov if you have black/matte grey combo.

not true... i had my rims powder coated, only costs $30-40 per rim, and it is a very strong coating, i had no marks/scratches on mine, and they got thrown around a bit with swapping rims/tyres, etc quite often.

thats powdercoated though, it will take you a while masking that up for wet paint

if applied correctly powdercoat wont flake off when chipped, as paint is wont to do.

go get a quote though, you might get lucky like mitchy_ did with a cheap price, blasting alone costs from $25-$35 a rim.

if you want to do it to hose rims, go satin black, and do the whole rim.... leaving the lip silver wont work....

By that I meant you will eventually gutter from parking/stupid driving. Doing you're own paintjob is fun though, if you have time on your hands.

yeah it was a good exercise for me. never done anything like it before.

with all my gutter rash it would of cost me a mint to have them done professionally.

learnt a lot and turned out great.

unfortunately i just installed windows 7 and forgot to make a backup of some of my photos. hence no better photos than the avatar one

whoops, forgot to mention sand blasting... i had that done seperately.

all up i paid $300 to have 4 rims and 7 centre caps sand blasted, and powder coated.. the finish was perfect and didn't flake/fade for the entire time i had the rims.

Where'd you get that done? I wanna call around tomorro and see how i go, and Im painting 5 rims, including the spare i tracked down .. tlked to my gf's brother and he says we can look into it,,jus depends how much time i wanna spend without the car.

I think I'll have a test run with the spare tyre and make my decision from there

does anyone know anywhere good in nsw for wheel painting?..... preferably inner west?...... i've got a set of rays ce28n's that i wouldn't mind painting black, and i'd be struggling to find time for a backyard job,....
