Installing Fmic And Ebc

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

My HDi Gt Spec intercooler and EBC arrived yesterday and I plan to have them installed this weekend. I just wanted to know, considering the car is completely stock, what I could expect to see performance wise (whether it be a positive or a negative outcome). Like will I have turbo lag or any other problems? I just want a heads up so I don't freak out lol.

I know I should have installed an exhaust first but I got a good deal on this stuff so I took it. Next step would be a full 3" system. Oh and I was thinking of setting my boost controller at 8psi for low and 9psi for high (too much??).

Any information or advice would be awesome.

Cheers,

Chris

front mount may give you slightly more lag because of the larger air volume to fill, but it will change the induction sound more than anything else. 8-9psi should be fine but there's not much point going higher until you sort the exhaust out, and once you do I'd run no more than 10psi considering where you live. Heat is the enemy of stock turbos but 10psi will be safe.

Ok so the fact that the intercooler is dumping more cold air into the pistons will mean that too much boost will be produced for the stock exhaust to handle?? And how would the induction noise change?

Maybe I should just hold off until I can afford an exhaust :)

it's not a case of too much boost for the exhaust to handle, the more you try and force air through (boost) the more your exhaust backpressure goes up to oppose it. fit a nice free flowing exhaust and the backpressure drops away meaning at the same level of force (boost) you push a lot more air through the engine. think of an engine like an air pump, the more air (and fuel) you get through it the more power you make. boost is just a measure of restriction, you're applying 10psi of pressure to try and get air to move through the engine.

So will this build up of backpressure stress the engine? It really does sound like installing a fmic prior to an exhaust isn't a good idea. So a nice 3" exhaust from the turbo back should allow better flow (was thinking a kakimoto cat back with a bellmouth front/dump) to balance the amount of boost produced by the intercooler?

it won't stress the engine and there's no harm in doing the FMIC now, you just won't realise much benefit until you do the exhaust because the stock system is a bottleneck to making good power.
