Hi,

my new s1 r33 dash surround(the bit with the vents in it)has seen better days.

The coating is coming off in patches and a prev owner has cracked it below the gauges.

Whats my options?

Thinking of stripping all the old coating off - glueing up the crack and painting the whole thing.

OR

Buying a good secondhand one and stripping back the old coating and polishing the black plastic(with plastic polish), ive done this to the gear surround and it looks ok- but will it last?.

Is there a aftermarket replacement?

Any other ideas guy?

Wear tear is something you can't avoid. However, you may want to do what you yourself suggesting, e.g. gluing cracked areas up and then respray etc, or you can carbon fiber the whole dash. I've seen a mate of mine done it and it looks awesome. Go for the darker more subtle CF. That's one idea.

Good luck. However, I think the R33 Dash looks tough as...so don't go changing it too much.

Prob the best place to start is ignore everything that spunky munky says, he knows NOTHING about what looks good lol.

Ive just gone through this dash thing myself, best way to fix the crack is bit of epoxy on the back and a plastic filler like plasti-bond from bunnings on the front and sand it flat. use a fine sand paper to remove the crappy peeling coating and get it back to plastic. A good laquer paint bonds well and will provide a nice matte finish, u can clear coat if u want a shiny gloss look but i personally reckon a black or dark grey looks best!

best of luck with it dude

black looks good...is that a matt black you used..ive always thought about doing mine black but have never seen pics.
The black looks great.

Do you need to use a special primer/paint to go onto the plastic?

Did you use a clear over it?

I just sanded the stock one back then used a spray primer then i did 3 coats of satin Black... Havent used a clear gloss on it and dont think i will.. it has come up really nice and im glad a changed it from the white...

Just got the Black satin paint from supercheap and the sand paper and primer from hardware store.... Good idea as it only costs about $30 for materials

    • Yeah, you are right. It seems easier and more reasonable to boost the engine. And as you said the blocks are very similar but the cylinder bores are different.
    • Sound logic, but in actuality way more illegal than just having the wrong pipe. Normally, doing something like that would be forgery. Meaning you may have certain documentation for vehicle parts, but the actual parts are different ones and you just assign them the numbers and badging from the documents. But nevermind that. Nonetheless, I AM curious if this pipe was ever made by any official manufacturer this way, because I honestly am not familiar with this pipe layout and shape. As I will be putting on the HKS Silent Hi Power once my exhaust gaskets arrive, as long as it sounds right I will just roll with this front pipe. I can always order the actual Mines part if I run into legal issues. It would be an unnecessary expense as there is lots of other problems I have on this car as of now.
    • So, weld a plate with the Mines logo laser cut into it, onto it. Instant Mines pipes, whether they were or weren't originally.
    • I don't know if the blocks are "the same". They will be very very similar. Obviously, either the bore or the stroke is going to be bigger on the 20. If the bore is bigger, then the 18 head is unlikely to fit properly. If the bore is the same, then you can almost certainly fit the CA18 head, but there migth be a few fun things you have to do to make water galleries (or other things) line up properly. Or... it could just be real easy. Is it worth the effort? Almost certainly not. You can make nearly as much power on a 2 valv ehead as you can on a 4 valve. There's not any "magic" in a 4 valve head.
    • Yes, me too!!!!  I need to find a something that has all the abbreviations for what these cars have LOL
