3-4k RPM is consistent with max boost.

Sounds like Jetwreck is right.

Highflow time............... :D

Doesn't make sense.

If we all have the same sound, it can't be the stock turbo as I don't have one!!

Wait a minute! Highflow a highflow!?!?!

Description is like the same sound as mind made.....did it for a while then stopped, thats when the rattling started......then there was nothing, not even boost....I could not describe it either at the time(I thought it was the gearbox)......I put the new turbo in, no more rattle and know more strange sound thats hard to explain. Tell me does you turbo seem as though it has multiple boost settings sometimes under full peddle?

P.S. Danny I got 40,000K's out of my turbo from the start of that noise....you will know when you are close as that will be when the rattling sound starts to really irritate you.

Che?

There are definite rises in boost at 3200rpm and ~3800rpm if that is what you mean, but it does not spike, just holds.

lol....I know that ....this will not feel right in the way it delivers the power.....can tell you this though, mine no longer makes any strange indescribable sounds. Hey did you go BB or are you still the standard setup just highflowed....maybe you still have a problem with your turbo??....just kidding.......I'm not an expert at sounds I have never heard but his description fits mine exactly. I searched all over the car for the F#$KING sound....even got to the stage that I was going to pull the gearbox out and have it rebuilt.

Not BB. Standard setup highflowed.

I have spoken with the guys at RE about it, but have just not had the time to take it in (they are not there on weekends).

Dunno man, sometimes it feels a bit weak (?) whereas other times it blasts through the revs and feel like it could haul an B-double up a mountain.

Maybe the eManage will help...

Just been on the phone with the guys that installed my highflow.

They seem to think that it sounds more like something to do with a lack of air getting to the turbo than anything.

Will try to organise a time next week, maybe, to get my car onto their dyno and (hopefully) replicate the sound.

+1 for that noise in the 3-4 K rev range.

not always there, but did improve a lot after i serviced the auto.

im convinced that its a slipping clutch pack or simular in the auto.

mine no longer does it unless i really load it up, like 4/5 people in it or a full tank and a heap of gear in the back...

the weird thing is, when the sound appears, giving it more jandel (thong for you aussies), makes it go away. maybe a bit more heat makes it lock up quicker?

mine has the stock turbo, but has had a kakimoto R system fitted, and is running around 14 psi.

Here's one theory that might fit the sound - do you have a paper-element air filter or anything that might flap about or vibrate only at certain revs?

OE replacement filter (Amsoil Ea) Nick.

Definitely wouldn't be flapping around or vibrating.

Thats what my standard was doing, in fact it was just all over the place. Andy will confirm this story....I was beaten from a set of light one day by a NA Forester....I am still hunting him for a re-run :)

That does not make sense....mine is BB, I have no cat, good airfilter, an exhaust system and it does not make that sound(If it's the same sound). My pull from the turbo (although very laggy from standing start....need a transbrake) is in short awesome and violent from about 4,500rpm all the way to the rev limiter and does not drop in any way to the speed limiter(tested on a track ;)). Not trying to shit you either mate....If you were Ian I would be though!!!.... :D .

PS. FTG Nissan was were I was broken down in March.....pity I didn't see your car parked around anywhere....would have saved some money in spare parts :D

4,500? Seems a bit laggy for me mate. Give me 1bar from 3700-3800 with no tapering off to redline.

What were you doing near FTG Nissan? I thought you broke down on the way back from Phillip Island??

Yeah I agree, could've saved a bit of money on parts - namely that pretty little powerduct you got there

(would've looked at your springs, but I got my suspension coming soon)

Back on topic

It sounded to me as if there is a slight blockage in the oil line to the turbo which clears pretty quickly (when the noise goes), but I am told that the turbo would seize almost instantly if this were the case.

Or could it be a bit of vibration from the turbo?

nah it's no rattle noise..

it's a grinding noise..

like a heavy chair grinding against a wooden floor but as long as im in 3-4K rpm itll just make that noise..longer i keep it half throttle the longer the noise..

it's a very dull sound...

i doubt it's turbo...

i know how stuffed compressors wheels sound like..

  • 3 months later...

Hey, i know its been a while since this was talked about, but, did anyone fix this strange noise without changing the turbo???

My rx is doing the same thing. I thought it was an exhaust leak but now ive changed the exhaust and noise still persists!!

I find that accelerating up up hills is when it happens most.

Ended up being the turbo....complete rebuild.

Did this noise occur every time you took it in the 3-4k rev range or did it only happen on occasion??

It just seems weird with mine because sometimes it boosts nicely all the way through and other times it doesnt :whistling:

Do you think it could be something in the gear box or possiblly a worn yoke in the tailshaft vibrating???

Yes thats the rev range......the reason it works sometimes and not others is because it is binding up. It feels like you have 2 boost settings does it not?

    • Hi all. Been a while but things are moving along. I just have something that I am wondering about. Since I will use OEM turbo oil pumbing, I got myself a new bolt, the one that goes into the engine block oil feed. As I recall (and see visually) this bolt comes restricted with I think a 1.7mm hole? Not quite sure but it was something around that size. The turbos have 1mm restrictor bolts installed, as necessary due to ball bearings and my higher oil pressures. Can I now just use that OEM bolt with the 1.7mm hole in for the engine block or will this actually be too much oil flow restriction and I have to drill it out first? In my head it would make sense for the bolt to be at least 2mm wide as both turbos take "1mm of oil flow". Do let me know if my logic is flawed here, I just want to make sure I don't kill my turbo bearings with too little oil. Don't know if I can trust the saying I read somewhere that ball bearing turbos essentially only need an oil mist
    • There are several aftermarket options available, from not-too-painful moneyhttps://justjap.com/collections/driveshafts-bearings/products/d-max-reinforced-replacement-rear-driveshaft-set-fits-nissan-s13-s14-s15-r32-r33-r34-c35 and  https://justjap.com/products/crank-motorsport-billet-rear-axles-fits-nissan-skyline-r33-gts-t-r34-gt-t?srsltid=AfmBOorQk4xkGUa98kO7v2ePLUiNt-HRrM2AwWNw9mbSIVE1ujBVwY__, all the way up to The Driveshaft Shop https://driveshaftshop.com/skyline-cv-axles/
    • Yeah based on old XRC5964S specs, it looks to be roughly GTX3576R sized? But this 5964S compressor will flow 90lb airflow somewhat similar to the compressors in both the GTX3584RS or G35-1050.. I fully expected the 0.64 rear A/R to choke up top - seems way too small from typical convention - but these are seemingly beneficial over the prior 0.82 results.. Be interesting to see if he comments on the EFR question in that thread - he mentioned in a prior video that BW EFR's were the "cats pajamas 10 years ago", but by the sounds of things all his kits have been using Xona for quite a while now.
    • Yeah it’s still got the oem manual gearbox and clutch, only kinda mods are a blow off valve, coil overs, and a aftermarket intercooler. Also had it for about 2 months now with a lovely midnight purple paint on it.
    • Yeeeppp, been following a lot of the testing on the latest Xona stuff and there are some mental results.  He also went over 1000hp @ 4 hubs on his Mainline with a XRE6364S (63mm) which was also well into the 20psi range before 4000rpm on a 2.5. Crazy stuff. Fwiw the XRE5964S is basically the modern equivalent of their old HTA3582 - would drive nicely enough on an RB25 or 26, but proven capable of a huge amount of power if you want to spicy with rpm tho even at sane boost levels will make stout numbers
