would also like to add, this is a r34 gtr with low km's. not very old. it would not be suffering from coil pack issues yet.

yes but it is 10 years old, and the engine is making alot more power than the standard engine, and the coilpacks just cant handle it anymore.

would it not be worth it to upgrade the coilpacks anyway... they are 10 years old, the engine is making 150kw more than standard... bakes has spent alot of the folding stuff on all this gear... even if they didnt need to be done, it would be a worth while upgrade.

what happens if he swaps some coils for someone else's... and the other person's cant handle the power and break down... then bakes is up for 2 sets of coils instead of one. the only way to rule out the coils is to get new ones.

I am having the same issue as you with my car - exactly the same - will occasionally miss on or off load - and yes, sounds exactly like a WRX when started up sometimes.

The problem is pretty intermittent for me - and seemed to resolve itself after I replaced the plugs - then it came back again - but not as frequently or as bad.

I do find that once the car has warmed up a bit it will come good.

I've been pondering the Splitfire coilpacks or one of the HKS ignition kits as a possible solutions.

So let us know how you go on once the coils go in.

Seriously man, I have to agree, sounds EXACTLY the same. Ive ordered the Splitfires today, Ill let you know how it goes. Might be able to put them in late next week depending on when they arrive at my door.

HKS use stock rb26 coil packs on the drag car. runs 7's ?

wow - i had no idea...i have a standard set on my gtr & another standard set from my previous aust delivered gtr :(

i guess i wont be upgrading for now if there is no real benefit other than age/wear & tear

I would suggest to try some ones elses coils first. I had a miss firing problem, I tried the coils, didnt fix it, yet I still got charged for them. Anyway, in the end for me it was a leak in the gaskets. Run a smoke test through your valves and see if there are any leaks. Soon as I sorted my gaskets out, the car was so smooth again :(

where do you get that price from? i had no idea they were that expensive

the only place you can get them from... nissan. last I checked their 26 coils were about $300 each retail. why do you think people buy splitfires when their standard coils fail? it's not for the pretty blue colour that's for sure!

Last time i was at my tuners he said he had a pretty worked 34 gtr on the dyno. It was making ok power but not what everyone expected with the setup it had (I don't know details of setup). He said it wasn't missing/hesitating or anything but they decided to throw a set of split fires in as well as a set of HKS plugs. Straight away the car made 100kw more. He said the same thing as R31Nismoid, that the late model coil setup on 33's and 34's are just shit and he recommended his customers with late model skylines to change them, or keep this in mind, even before the car goes into the workshop. Anyway, my 2c.

well one thing I'd look at is plugs. as you run more power and more boost you need to think about the heatrange plug you are using. for a standard car 6s may be ok. personally even with light upgrades I'd go to 7s and with more boost and different turbos you may even need 8s. my silvia will miss heavily as it ramps onto boost with 7s, but runs amazingly well with a set of 8s in there. I know coppers are cheap and are "ok". i was a big fan of using cheap $3 NGK coppers and changing them a lot. but now having used true high performance Greddy and HKS plugs I can tell you there is a big difference. Since they use irridium tips they can run a very fine 0.6mm tip which is a good thing. high performance car should have high performance plugs.
