Hi fellas, delighted to say we certainly have not forgotten about the old girl Project GTST & she ran her quickest time ever at the weekend just gone

7.68 @ 176.9 mph on race fuel, no nos etc - plenty left in her yet & just great to have moved the times on again from last year.

Plenty of comps left this year to try & sneak another 1/10th or 2 out of the old girl again :D

Now looking seriously at wheelie bars for her as we are losing time drifting on runs for sure (seeing 0.2 - 0.5 lateral g every run) - will try & get them fitted if possible for the next time she is due to run which is on 20/21 June.

Car has been developed over the last 4 years, started out as a road going GTST drag car in 2006 running on the standard IRS & the standard gearbox & the RB25 ran 9.9, was switched to an RB26 & car was backhalved & put on an airshifter in 2007 8.5, moved on to 7.75 in 2008

kep up the good work John. I've always believed a well set up rwd would own an AWD on the strip.

There are gtr's out there with years more development than your car that cant run those numbers.

I hope you dont ignore this car when you get the new ride up and running. Would love to see where it ends up.

Thanks guys - i can guarantee you that we will not forget about the GTST. It holds a very very very special place in my heart as was my first ever skyline when i bought her bog standard for the road all those years ago.

We have finally taken the decision to fit wheelie bars now, they will go on next week as the car is getting very very lairy off the line & we are seeing 0.2 - 0.5 lateral sidewways G at the moment until at least the 1/8th and sometimes 2/3rd track & it's costing us time, teh car is driveable & you can keep your foot in ok but a lot of travelling all over the track for sure.

Main reason we have not fitted them to date was to try & keep the road appearance of the car as long as possible but physics will always win in the end & all the other cars we are running against posting similar or even slower times have them on so a moral in the story really. It should mean we get a lot less body twist off the line & get a decent straightish start, it should also mean we can put more power through her off the line & go even harder.

The biggest issue we have for now is the safety cage, it's built to 7.5 sec regulations & it's so bloody strict over here now, if you go below that time twice you can be suspended for the year. The plan at the end of the season over the winter is to upgrade the cage to "unlimited" switch her to LH drive & change her to methanol & put bigger tyres on - we should see at least a 300 bhp + increase & that may be just enough to get down to very low 7's or even high 6's. I have no idea how reliable the car will be & it will be a real guinea pig situation.

The other problem is there is by no means unlimited cash available & we could really do with finding a couple of additional sponsors as we don't want to find we are spending all of our cash on 1 car & forgetting about the other.

Either way it may well be the last year for Project GTST next year in 2010 & it makes sense to go absolute hell for leather & balls out to see what's possible & then retire the old girl. She has been a wonderful wonderful car & if i was to sell her it would have to be outside of the UK as i couldnt bear to line up against it :D

Be interesting this year to see what the car does once the wheelie bars are fitted & we are 100% going to finally run nos at the last competition of the year in october after avoiding it for so long.

Great work John you have that record in your sights now but dont stop there. I want to see the first rb powered vehicle run 6.99 then you can start playing with the zed

    • Yep, pretty much what you said is a good summary. The aftermarket thing just attached to the rim, then has two lines out to valve stems, one to inner wheel, one to outer wheel. Some of the systems even start to air up as you head towards highway speed. IE, you're in the logging tracks, then as speeds increase it knows you're on tarmac and airs up so the driver doesn't even have to remember. I bet the ones that need driver intervention to air up end up seeing a lot more tyre wear from "forest pressures" in use on the highway!
    • Yes, but you need to do these type certifications for tuning parts. That is the absurd part here. Meaning tuning parts are very costly (generally speaking) as well as the technical test documentation for say a turbo swap with more power. It just makes modifying everything crazy expensive and complicated. That bracket has been lost in translation many years ago I assume, it was not there.
    • Hahaha, yeah.... not what you'd call a tamper-proof design.... but yes, with the truck setup, the lines are always connected, but typically they sit just inside the plane of the rear metal mudguards, so if you clear the guards you clear the lines as well. Not rogue 4WD tracks with tree branches and bushes everywhere, ready to hook-up an air hose. You can do it externally like a mod, but dedicated setups air-pressurize the undriven hubs, and on driven axles you can do the same thing, or pressurize the axles (lots of designs out there for this idea)... https://www.trtaustralia.com.au/traction-air-cti-system/  for example.... ..the trouble I've got here... wrt the bimmer ad... is the last bit...they don't want to show it spinning, do they.... give all the illusion that things are moving...but no...and what the hell tyre profile is that?...25??? ...far kernel, rims would be dead inside 10klms on most roads around here.... 😃
    • You're just describing how type certification works. Personally I would be shocked to discover that catalytic converter is not in the stock mounting position. Is there a bracket on the transfer case holding the catalytic converter and front pipe together? If so, it should be in stock position. 
    • You talking about the ones in the photo above? I guess that could make sense. Fixed (but flexible) line from the point up above down to the hubcap thingo, with a rotating air seal thingo. Then fixed (but also still likely flexible) line from the "other side" of the transfer in the hub cap thingo up to the valve stem on the rim. A horrible cludge, but something that could be done. I'd bet on the Unimog version being fed through from the back, as part of the axle assembly, without the need for the vulnerable lines out to the sides. It's amazing what you can do when you have an idea that is not quite impossible. Nearly impossible, but not quite.
