Hey all,

Just a couple of questions about gauges for my R34, i want to put 3 gauges in, just as an experiment and to make it look sportier lol.

I definitely want air to fuel ratio, anyone know how to wire it up?

I would also really like to monitor the air intake temperature going to my pod from the CAI, but i wasnt sure if air intake gauges are for turbo cars and it measures the intake from the intercooler? Or can i do it with my N/A, and if so, how do i wire it and all that?

Lastly, does anyone have any ideas about what other gauge i could get, most ive seen are for turbos so arent really relevant to me lol.

Im really just doing this as a personal interest sort of thing, i like the look of gauges and i would like to monitor certain things about the performance of my car, not really for tuning purposes for now, rather just as an experiment and to learn more about the car.

Cheers for any help

A/F gauge is going to be more of a filler gauge than anything else

Oil Temp, Water Temp, Oil Pressure are the first 3 gauges you should get. Obviously boost gauge is for a turbo.

You can get a vacuum pressure gauge, but once again you're better off saving money that you would spend on A/F and vacuum gauges and getting decent oil/water/pressure gauges.

Your ECU from factory is going to handle your A/F Ratios well, if anything it will have a tendancy to run richer rather than lean.

If you have a demanding sound system that requires a good stable voltage, then a voltmeter would be handle to ensure it doesn't dip too low and damage any sound equipment under load.

Save your money though, just get the oil temp / water temp / oil pressure and use the rest of the money for other mods.

The voltmeter and oil temp / water temp gauges sound like a good idea, do you know how to wire them? Ive already got oil pressure, it came stock in the dash with my car, sits under the speedo

I've heard that the stock oil pressure isn't the most accurate. I'm yet to fit my gauges (going to do it with my next service) and I'll be having oil press/water temp/ oil temp fitted.

You need the adapters to suit. Check out Just Jap.

The gauges will come with a sender unit, so basically it's a matter of wiring up the power (12v+ and ground), and the wires from the sender units.

You'll have water hose adapter which the temp senser goes on.

Then you've got sandwhich plate adapters for oil pressure and oil temp which the sender things will also attach to.

i have volts, oil temp and vac in my 34

Nicely done with the gauges at the bottom. I've seen cigarette lighters cut out to accomodate a single 52mm boost gauge before. I want to try keep from mounting gauges on the dash, though it makes it easier to see while driving. I like the paint you used on the dash plastics.

I fitted some Swoosh ones a couple of years back, they were great, I just felt 'gauged-out' with all of them in the middle though....at night it was like a commercial jet.

I had AF ratio, Exhaust temp and a Boost gauge in there.

Haha see this is what i wanna do, i like the jet cockpit look =P But yeh, i wanna have mine mounted on either the dash like this, or on the pillar, but apparently the pillar is illegal now, so i wanna go with dash. I could put them where MissR34 has them, but i dont wanna remove the cigarette lighter because i have a GPS and things, and also it seems more dangerous to have them down there, harder to take a quick glance while driving

Air intake temp is pretty pointless, in my opinion.

I've got a GReddy Intelligent Informeter which pulls water temp, voltage and air intake temp from the OEM sensors (as well as a bunch of other data). You could get something similar if you actually want to know something rather than just ricing out your interior.

Then you could just get triple gauges for what the OEM ECU doesn't read, like oil temp, oil pressure, water pressure, A/F ratio.

I use one of these http://www.ecutalk.com/consultlcd.aspx

it is sitting under the lid of the factory tv screen that no longer works, just plugs straight into your diagnostic port and away you go. works very well

This might be a noobish question, but will this work if using a piggy back system such as the eManage Blue? I would imagine that the data coming from the ECU would be data before being remapped by the eManage and therefore probably wouldn't show correct data on the ecu talk... or am I mistaken? Looks like something I might add to my future mod list if it will be compatible.

I'm not entirely sure, I have a feeling it would read incorrect

In reality your best bet would be to fit the factory GT-t gauge cluster and put whatever aftermarket gauges in that you choose. It's a good location there.

Lol where would i get one of them from though? I dont mind cutting the trim, im sure i can do a decent job of it. But i might just mount the gauges as they come, they have their own mounts or i can buy a holder. I would prefer a holder, they look better, but if its that much harder then ill just mount them on the top dash with their stock mounts

    • This isn't for lotsa powers, and time and effort isn't even a thing I'm concerned about The whole reason is "Just because fun", and "Just because fun" is what I do And whilst there are other kits, with better and more modern turbos (Rev9 use the same Kraken manifold I believe), where in Sydney can I do a drive in drive out with the after sales support that MX5 Mania give My Turbo 86 made around 200kwatw on a AVO turbo kit, and was over 100kg heavier than the MX5, but it was a blast to drive around the streets, until I crashed it.....DOOH, so somewhere around 200 ish level and some whooshy noises and I'll be happy driving to work, the shops, or heading into the country with Jackie for Devonshire tea So, thanks Dose for your info, it sounds like a 0.64 will be fine for what I'm after👍 The only real racing I do nowadays is to the toilet
    • Hey @Butters, did you end up getting this clutch in ? I have just ordered to a uniclutch track to go in my getrag 6 speed that’s in my BNR 32
    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
    • This came quicker than I thought. It ain't even 2025 yet.
