yeah it all comes down to towing frequency vs daily driving. if you are towing on a regular basis, then go for the better tow car. if you are going to tow 3 or 4 times a year then go for something that will suit you better for daily driving (comfortable, nicer to drive/park, cheaper running costs).

on the subject of luxo 4wd's anyone know what those Merc's go like towing (not in the slightest part of my budget)? Saw one with a horse float on the way back from Canberra this afternoon and i din't know that could tow that much weight.

Think it was a M class, looking at the specs they have two Diesel models -

ML 300 CD I

BlueEFFICIENCY

2,987cc, 6-cylinder, 150 kW, 500 Nm

Direct-injection, turbocharged

ML 350 CD I

2,987cc, 6-cylinder, 170 kW, 540 Nm

Direct-injection, turbocharged

The Gl class is impressive as well

GL 450 CD I

Luxury

3,996cc, 8-cylinder, 225 kW, 700 Nm

Direct-injection, twin-turbocharged

hahaha

Ive seen a VY comnmodore tow a range rover on the F3.

and no, I didnt get that around the wrong way.

Well, no towing with the narava two weeks time, mates wife had a whinge.

she is off my christmas card list now.

haha, I must be a wheel holder.

I don't understand why people take criticism of their chosen vehicle so personally, maybe you should "man up buddy".

I've had my fair share of "man's" vehicles,.... one was a lifted 'Cruiser ute on 33" muds and twin lockers, it drove like shit. It actually drove a bit more shit that the bog-stock 1998 GU wagon I owned briefly. Yes, they're completely drivable. No, they are not a paragon of refinement or driving joy.

If I were to be towing a large trailer over the Canning Stock Route, or off-raoding and needed maximum wheel articulation, I'd likely chose a Patrol.

That does not, however, make them "the" default choice for those who want for a good daily driver that can also tow their race car interstate comfortably time to time.

the toyota part is where you went wrong there mate.... hahaha (and it begins)

just lent my trailer to a mate

it weighs 600kgs

have a look at the weather

ill blow it up and put it up at his funeral

Fatz, I'm shocked that even you let him leave using that as a tow vehicle... Even for an empty trailer only!

how bout a toerag??

lot of car for the cash if you can deal with the VW badge over the audi rings

^^^ Helluva thing. Couple of the boys here have them. I've towed Berry's cars with his V6 diesel Toureg, and it was impressive. I imagine the V10 only more so. Out of warranty would worry me though, especially given the brand new Toureg's exceptional value for money.

If it were my money, as much as I LOVE the R50, I think I'd buy a brand new loaded (with low range transfer case now available) V6 diesel Toureg.

I can vouch for the R50 being a great tow car, only downside is that I don't get to tow that often anymore....

It's also a fairly decent daily too, as 4WDs go.

And for all those fuel economists out there....who gives a shit if it uses 11-16L/100kms, I only wish fuel was my biggest expense when it comes to towing/racing cars!!

An R50, in the Simpson, over dunes?! I thought I had big balls taking mine to Fraser Island solo on 22's.... he trumps me! haha

And yeah, the new model Toureg was realeased without a low range transfer case which was a majot step backwards, but they now offer it as an option. It's a must have IMO, even if you only plan light off-roading such as a bit of beach work.

going alone on 22's is a bit brave. But as long as you stick to this side of Middle Rock there'll always be someone around before too long.

I've taken the old GQ up to Sandy Cape solo with a trailer full of water and camping gear a couple of times. I wouldn't even contemplate doing that with anything less than lives axles and coils. oh, and a winch! Last time we didn't see another vehicle north of Ocean Lake all week. And on the way up there the trailer got us hung up coming off one of the rocks last time. There was a big step down caused by a water running out right beside the rock. Drawbar hit the rock before the rear wheels hit the sand. And the running water quickly buried the fronts... Had to get the spare off the back and bury it to winch off. We should really have shoveled a ramp out of the coffee rock before driving off it I guess...

Simpson isn't that kind of isolation anymore and there's no time pressure because of tides... the issue out there is reliability. Something goes wrong with a Toureg out there, its an expensive recovery and tow back to somewhere who can diagnose the thing. Not a risk I'd take.

fuel costs is a big issue IMO.

at the end of the day it all adds up. not all of us have endless cash to play with to be able to use luxury 4wd's as tow cars and not worry about how much fuel your v10 twin turbo is going to use going from perth to qld... I know for me i have to budget carefully for every aspect of an interstate trip.
