Hi, my car has sony speakers everywhere and a sony headunit which sound decent for what they are. Now my issue is when I turn the volume up I hear like what sound like crap wiring/crackling static sound from the parcel shelf speakers, more so the passenger side one. When I turn the volume up even higher I get a huge crackling sound through the roof. The music plays as per normal and sounds good just a huge noise when base comes on and generally when volume is louder.

(no amp/sub, just speakers, and tweeters)

What can I do before I have to resort to taking it to an audio shop?

I think you should be able to check it from the boot. Sorry can't check in my car, i don't have rear speakers.

Is it definitely crackling, not distortion. It could be that the speaker has come loose and is rattling in it's mount, as you mentioned this would be at it's worse when the bass kicks.

I got a strut in there so its hard to have a proper look but from what I can see from outside, the covers are lifting from the parcel shelf and I can see that there is a gap between the speaker and the mount. (Bring to audio shop?)

Definitely not distortion cause the music is crisp clear, just the heavy crackling...

However when its on, it comes from the rear speakers, when the volume is really up there it goes mad through the roof?

speakers could be damaged and only be noticable at high volume, pull the parcel shelf out and have a look at the speaker cone and surrond and make sure that its not damaged or anything like that, to pull the parcel shelf out is pretty simple theres 2 bolts on the back seats one each side there 12mm, take these bolts out then push in at the bottom of the seat each side then pull up and it should pop up, make sure you do that to both sides, once you pull the bottom of the seats out there is two bolts on either side of the back seats down in the bottom corners, take these out then push the whole back seat up and forward they should realese of hooks and come out easyly, then the back parcle shelf will have a few clips that will just pop up with some gentle pulling up (make sure u locate the clip then pull up in the clip area otherwise you can snap the parcel shelf in all different sections) then pull it towards you and you can then see the speakers/check there not damaged and all that. i might not have explained it easly but once you find the bolts and things its quite simple. if your not confident enough doing it take it to a shop and ask them to do it, they will probs only charge like $40 or $50 but would reckomend you give it a go urself and save urself some cash, if you get stuck you can pm me and i will try and take some picks to send you if u want to help.

strange. I have a 33 S2, and put a stereo in it last night. Oh the drama that was....

atm, i have to have the fader set 100% to the rear, or as soon as the front speakers start to come in, it'll get all distorted and crackly. The speakers worked fine on the stock headunit, and the headunit worked fine in my old car. The speakers arent earthing to the body, as there is no continuity between them (tested with multimeter).

We did manage to fix it at one point, and that was when we separated all the wires (power, acc, antenna etc) instead of having them all taped together in a bundle.... but as soon as i mounted the stereo in the dash the noise came back again. Think im going to rip everything to bits and run my own constant and acc wires and just tell the standard stuff to f* off.

Looking at the wiring too, the standard loom has pathetically tiny wires.... but when tested all the +12 ones had good voltage.

Another thing im not sure of, is i have heard people test the phase of speakers with a battery.... how do you know when its in and out of phase?

      And at over $2 per litre I'm starting to consider setting up a corn mash still and converting over to alcohol and running mine on it !  Up side of that is it all doesn't have to go into the car ! Win win !

      H2 (for cars) will never happen. It's not reasonable for any number of reasons. It's also not reasonable for almost all of the industrial uses that the fanbois say that it will be used for, again for a large number of reasons. There are some cases where it will be good. But, even those will be massively hampered by the economics. The only way that H2 can be economic is if we somehow manage to get from where we are to the other side of the economic-valley-of-death in which no-one can operate. You need there to be sufficient renewable generated electricity to be available so that it is effectively free. Once you are there, you can do whatever the hell you want and hang the efficiency. But until you get there, the ever diminishing value of electricity makes it harder and harder to encourage businesses to build the new generation capacity, and they will simply stop investing in generation projects. (I kinda think there needs to be just government money spent on building the required capacity in a non-commercial way, similar to how the first fossil fueled grids were built, as national-government owned utilities. And probably some nuclear in there to start. But this all should have started 10-15 years ago to avoid the chasm of death that we face right now). Synth fuels will be much more likely, but will only occur is there is at least some renewable H2 production, because you need H2 to do it. And you need stacks of free (or at least extraordinarily cheap) energy because assembling molecules back into fuels is exactly the opposite process to burning the fuel, and the reason we burn fuels is because there is so much energy squeezed into each molecule. So you're somewhat subject to the same economic valley of death problem as above anyway. That is unless people are willing to pay the current equivalent of $5 or $6 per litre of petrol-ish liquid fuels. Can you imagine it? The squealing at $2 now is bad enough.

      This is so cool. Get a dashcam that records audio and hopefully you'll catch it.  Maybe there's a brand or some kind of markings on the back ? Are the pics hand drawn? I love it so much.

      Hahaha yep, point(s) taken. I just like seeing different things and an EV in an R32 is pretty different. I'm not on the EV band wagon, I'm waiting for synthetic fuels or hydrogen personally.
