I have a stock R31 auto, bought as a daily car so 33 gets a break.

Last week i pulled home realising that it was overheating and it was boiling so much i could hear it spilling into the overflow bottle.

I have done a radiator flush but no change, taken in to radiator place and he reckons its a blocked radiator but when undoing the bleed bolts nothing comes out and all other pipes besides the 2 from the radiator are hot. Also pipes going into heater are pretty dry.

Just after any help as im stumped and dont want to put it into a shop as will cost a fortune in labour.

Am gonna pull it apart on the weekend and check radiator, also pull off all pipes and check thermostat....

If you have had this trouble or can help i would appreciate it.

Thanks

Brad

If you're mechanically minded best part is to work from your engine back.

I couldn't tell you whats wrong as I can't physically see whats the deal.

Basic elimination brother i'm afraid.

Oh...simple, but...is there coolant going fromt the overflow bottle into the radiator?

I have once found a leaf in my bottle in my van, f**k knows how it got in there, but it caused the coolant to stop flowing out.

Hope that helps.

RJ!

Yeah the water is filtering into the radiator and there isnt any leaks, guess only thing i can do is pull it apart and hope i find something.

Guy at radiator place felt the 2 top pipes and said coz they are hot that the thermostat is fine and that he rackons its a blockage...

The fact that the other pipes coming from the engine arent hot i think it may be something else. The bleed bolts should leak air or coolant right?

my car was doing the same thing i replaced everything. new water pump, thermostat hoses etc etc.. turns out the rad was blocked solid cos i used cheap shit coolant from woolies. i got it cleaned at a rad place and is great. cost me $135 including labour to pull it out etc. take it out urself and take it in tell them the core is blocked you want it strip cleaned. where they take the tanks off and jam a strip of stainless into every core to clean them. i wish i had done that first wouldve saved me a lot of money and heartache.. give it a shot mate

I simple check before your spend any money would be to remove your thermostat... chuck a pot of water on the stove... ideally if have a thermometer you can keep an eye on how hot the water is getting.. place the thermostat in the water and see if it opens.

If you're going to boil the thermostat;

- of course if it doesnt open at all with boiling water its stuffed

- just because it opens in boiling water doesnt necessarily mean its opening at the right temperature. So its best to have the a thermometer. Not sure what the opening temp will be, but i'd guess about 70, definitely less than 85.

You could also just remove the thermostat and go for a drive, tho it will take much longer to get up to temperature, so dont thrash it early.

have the taken the car to get looked at yet??

first of all dont take it anywhere without using a pair of pliers/screw driver and ur garden hose

there should be coolant coming out of ur bleeder screw!!! if there isnt.... put the hose into the radiator until water comes out then refitt the screw.

pull both your radiator hoses off (at engine end) and pump the hose in it full blast and see if u get as much coming out as u are pumping in..... if it seems like ur not, the radiator could be blocked....

put it back together and do the same process on ur two small pipes going to the firewall..... put the interior heater swtich to HOT, take both hoses off from the engine side, pump the hose in one end and see if the same amount of water is coming out the other hose..... if its equal flow then ur heater core isnt blocked....

if both of those looks good, pull ur thermostat out , put it back together minus thermostat.... fill with water and let it bleed the air out then go for a drive and see wot happens....

do that b4 u take it anywhere and post results

    • @soviet_merlin Thanks mate!  Nothing too major but will hold me up for a while. I've got lymphomas to get taken off the back of my neck and the middle of my spine which always conjures scary thoughts!  It sounds worse than it is. Yeah great, conjuring more rabbit hole deepening , just what I need! 🤣
    • I'd argue the F50 kit I got is very good value. For ~2k I got the calipers (refurbed condition), adapters, pads, brake lines, rotors, and top hats. I think you'd be pretty hard to get Evo/GTR/350z brembos + the additional hardware for similar money. Used market for a pair of front calipers alone I've seen tend to run anywhere from $1500-2000 depending on condition.    That said, something like a GTR or 350z brembo is a lot easier to adapt to the Silvia.
    • Is there a significant price difference between the Evo/gtr/350z brembos vs the F50? Looks amazing.
    • I was actually being a tightarse at the time LOL... My OCD is tickling me into running a 2nd 8AN Teflon hose all the way down and removing the 2x OEM hardlines. My other side of my brain is telling me to run 2x hardlines front to back (also acts as a fuel cooler, so win win).
    • As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had some trouble with the Silvia's brakes dragging back in 2023. I managed to sort it out then, but the same problem came back to bite me late last year. Just take a look at the picture – I had a feeling the handbrake was acting up again, and I was right. Anyway, I'd been wanting to upgrade to bigger brakes for a while. Not that the Silvia's brakes were bad, but it was more of a "want" than a "need", you know? It was funny, though – at the time, I couldn't find any Evo Brembos, 350Z Brembos, or GTR Brembos for a decent price (of course, tons of them popped up online after I already bought my kit!). I ended up going with an F50 Brembo kit, which came with adapters, brake lines, 330mm rotors, and top hats. The F50 Brembo caliper was used in a few other cars too, like the FPV. I also decided this was the perfect opportunity to ditch the Silvia's ridiculous rear brakes and that awful handbrake (some of you were definitely right about that!). I picked up some R33 calipers and all the necessary bits – rear drums, backing plates, and new hardware to refurbish the calipers. Of course, it wouldn't be a project without a few hiccups. Turns out the brake master cylinder was playing up and basically (to put it simply) keeping the brakes engaged. I had it overhauled, and after some adjustments, everything was working again. The whole process took a while, as you can imagine. To top it off, the front right wheel bearings were shot and needed replacing too. This is a rare occasion where I'm posting an update while it's all still fresh! These pictures were taken just this afternoon.
